am always interested in what people do for a living. It shapes their personality and even creates their "voice". Recently, I added up what my sl friends tell me they do in real. Naturally, there is always a "doubt-tag" - but in the case of most of these people there is no doubt about what they do for a living. So ...

The majority of my friends IN SL are either university/college professors and lecturers, artists or lawyers (an odd mix, I admit, especially for someone like myself with my background.) In REAL, I know TONS of artists but I have never really ever got along with lecturers or teachers. Many of them are the snobbiest creatures to walk the planet but some are not. And I am surprised by finding lawyers enjoying the crazy antics of their avis. Do you find the same thing happens to you?

So I got to thinking about what we all do for our livings. It may establish an interesting demographic. Maybe you wanna tell us what you really do for your career and why SL suits you. Does SL reflect your real world? Are you a computer specialist, a shopkeeper, a doctor or a nurse? So, dont be too specific but indicate what you do (if you like) and how sl plays a role in your job and vice versa.

PS Artists choose Media and Entertainment, please.

I'm a Marine... going to be a Linguist. But, I hope to actually follow my dreams, someday, and actually be a graphic artist for a small game company.

My SL reflects the life I wish I had, but not my real life. In fact, my behaviour isn't even particularly similar to how I act in reality... I like to say that Keira is my 'true self', but really, that's not true. Keira is Keira, and a completely separate person from my real-world self.

I voted Education (Admin), but that just keeps me in health insurance and retirement benefits, not to mention pays for this SL hobby. My real avocation is illustration and for over a decade it paid the bills -- in a hand to mouth sort of way. I'm making incremental progress in breaking back into it.

Jig,

I have questions of my own.

With all due respect it seems you post the same type of obnoxious questions that have no bearing on anything whatsoever. And the worse part is you do it everyday. At times you do it several times a day.

You always state you want to know what others think of your questions, but why? What difference does it make? What relevancy does it make to want to know what others think of questions with no real meaning?

I'm no doctor but it seems you're really lacking something, or some type of substance in your life. It's almost like you have nothing to do and you just sit down and come up with these same type of questions all the time. wtf.

I see and understand why your recent thread got somewhat out of hand. People seem to tire of these constant postings. They would be comical if they weren't so irritating. I'm leaning towards your goal being you like irritating the readers here so you continue nonstop.

According to you, your man isn't happy with your posts but it's not enough to stop or slow you down? Nice relationship I see.

But although everyone is free to post what they like it just seems really out the norm. I just don't get it. I don't.

So I got to thinking...
Did you now? You must rush to Resident Answers and post a thread then, post haste!!

Please go back and read the sticky thread entitled, "About this Forum". Then consider stopping abusing it.

Raymond (and Carlos - whoever you are)
Okay, you win. I'll stop. It's really not worthwhile. I got a completely wrong idea of what teh forum was about and I seriously just dont feel its worthwhile any more posting or coming on.
Every time I do, you are gonna be here anyway just rarin' to have a go at whatever I say. You or someone else.
I realize you have been on my case practically since I ever came on forum yonks ago and I must just rub you the wrong way.
I seriously dont want any more trouble.
I'll make a note at the start of the post and indicate here that this thread is closed as far as I am concerned.

When you thought you were suspended, starting that thread to get answers for your perceived SL crisis was a great use of this forum. So I jumped into action and started a thread on SLU to help get you an answer.

When you had a question about BBC radio inworld, you asked it here. That was a great use of this forum.

But most of your other threads are just self will run riot.

I know you aren't gone for good because you never follow through with your resolutions and I really don't want you to leave. Just abuse the place in moderation like everyone else does.

I was reading through the threads before I go to bed and I couldnt help but read your last post to me. "I know you arent gone for good" and "your other posts are just self-will run riot" - you know, I think this time I might just as well go. You seem to be an intelligent man - you read Eliot, profess Buddhism, appear to be in tune with your environment. (I actually have a line of Eliot tattooed on me. Just to remind myself that we'll never cease from exploration. That should put you off his verse for good, knowing that I have enjoyed it as well - some punk reading Eliot) As I say, you seem intelligent so you must realize that after a while I get tired of being patronized - even by "Pepe".
But I think that I really would rather just read a good book. Maybe Eliot. Maybe one of his essays on faith or on what makes a classic. It's gonna save me so much grief. So you win Raymond, you win in the end.

A real shame.

Jig you are one of my favourite posters on the whole forum. Always something interesting and generally nothing to do with the ugly issues of the day.

So you win Raymond, you win in the end.
So you think I was competing with you in some way instead of just asking you to respect this forum...I guess it's more convenient for you to paint me as a villain than to admit you went too far here.

I think I'll go too for a while...
I don't add much to the forum myself.

It seems obvious to me that Jig is going through an unhappy time.
Some gentleness is in order.

Nobody is obliged to read or post in a thread that they don't relate to.

I really don't see any problems with what Jig is using this forum for. Maybe jig's posting a lot, but his topics seem pretty interesting most of the time.

Myself i am pretty interested in this current topic, as to what other SL residents do in RL.

Maybe we should all relax a bit, it is SL afterall, why bring all the hassle and anger from RL in here.

Wow, what did Jig do wrong?

How does her posting a message warrant a review of her life and what could possibly be wrong with it?

Wow.

Stunning.

Keep on going Jig.

I'm a crash test pilot for NASA. That's mostly on my off days when I'm not working for the CIA.

In SL I have a little house with a white picket fence and I roleplay baking cookies and mending socks all day.

Seriously.

My education and most of my professional life has been in the soft sciences. Somewhere in there I picked up a CA teaching credential to make my then boss happy (it was just paperwork) but I never re-upped when it expired.

After a valiant early retirement attempt I somehow landed in the NUJ. I don't even use use my own name anymore when I appear in The National, I ghost under my students. I long ago quit paying my NUJ dues but still they persist in sending the newsletter, branch meeting notices, and various pleas for me to take up their special insurance policies.

Within a year of 'retirement' I got tricked onto a committee and offered to 'help' with a project which ultimately got me roped into education and environmental education  When the arm twisters show up, some times I even end up doing media related education and environmental education.

I am essentially a consultant at this point, and my students call me, "fook*n' ledge.' They do it behind my back, but with my sneaky soft scientist roots, I keep tabs on these things :p

edited to add: totally forgot I am an ordained minister of ULC. I have ordained enough other ministers that I was able to qualify for the saint certificate. I think it cost me a fiver :D

I think you should get charged and extra 1k for making polls =P
=)

PS. my only complaint about the poll is that it needs to be multiple choice... lots of people wear more than one hat.

I find it interesting that the OP does not declare what she does for a living in this thread, surely if she expects others to divulge RL info it would have been good manners to start by divulge her own.

I was in the Navy as an Intel Specialist.

I have a degree in political science with a minor in international studies. (Oh, i was also published in 2 political science journals, one by Dr. Pinky Wassenberg on the constitution, and the other by Dr. Calvin Mouw on Interest Group politics.)

I am currently a registered contract lobbyist in Illinois, though now, i only do support work for the firm, however i worked there full time back in 06 - and turned my job over to my husband who works there full time.

Right now i am currently researching legislation and other data that can help spearhead a ban of flavored blunt wraps in Illinois (as well as 10 other Midwest states).

Big Tobacco for the win! They hate flavored blunt wraps...

One good thing about this thread is that if anyone in future mentions "flavoured blunt wraps", I won't have to Google

I dont care what people do for a living, its just small talk to me.
what i care about is how they present themselves here.

to be honest, I have not met one lawyer here...... professors and teachers yes I know a few teachers. Homemakers a lot of... nurses yes... muscians absolutely.. hairdressers like me alot to...

artists to many to count on my fingers or toes

but never a lawyer or a doc..

I hope Jig won't go- I do not agree about abusing the forum- we all do- I think RA grew way beyond what its founders intended and frankly i don't give a damn- when they get fed up enough they will shut it down.

The only thing about the forum that bothers me is the people that so enjoy torpedoing others and run wanton, irrelevant personal attacks- I am not actually directing this at Ray's post about Jigs' posts - since he was polite and just stated his opinion, btw. I mean the stupid attacks that get just so oh not that bull crap again.

That said - I find this a very interesting poll. Hmm - I never really ask folks what they do for a living or what their backgrounds are- but these things do come out eventually in the course of convos- I am one of those that does not separate SL and RL to me this is all life. I know a school principal, a computer repair genius, a social worker, a counselor (neat thing about this particular person is they run a club and still manage to be caring to each of the members as if they were on his couch :) ), a teacher, a person who does something software related but would have to kill me if he told me exactly what he does - hehe, a student (over 18 but still a kid by my standards :) ) a stage actress/director, a respiratory nurse, an odd jobs person, a neurologist...

Me - i am just a secretary (as Jimmy Buffet would say, 'an over forty victim of fate, arriving too late') meh it pays the bills- sorta - the 'real' me is an eyelash tycoon and SL has set my inner me free.
