With a little assistance from the Department of Public Works - we could actually have at least ONE real mainland boating route. I spent some time this evening mapping one out. The only thing stopping this from being an reality is a few blockages by Linden Lab. MICHAEL LINDEN: Here is a worthy project for your crew.

*I also included info on waterfront parcels for sale along this route.

1) Bear
2) Cranberry(docked Pirate Ship)
3) Timmerman
4) Pine (waterfront parcel for sale)(21,000 Meters owned by one person preserved well - much respect to Lily and Stimpy)
5) Hatton
6) Portage
7) Thompson
8) Egan
9) Persis
10) Mayo
11) Calvet
12) Bettger
13) Bava
14) Crooked
15) Miller(waterfront for sale)
16) Burandt
17) Steiger
18) Chaska
19) Hazeltine(snowy passageway)
20) Skari
21) Ohno
22) Heaton
23) Thams
24) Eagan
25)Valmorel
26) Oberstdorf
27)Wengen
**28) Voss(NOT PASSABLE - Brent Linden blocked waterway with rocks and prim ice)
**29) Zermatt (NOT PASSABLE -more Linden Ice) (Free Linden Ice Skates)
30) Anton
31) Kitzbuhel
**32) Garmisch- TOO NARROW - DPW needs to terraform and make wider for boats.
33) Alberg
**34) Tethys (WATERWAY COMPLETELY BLOCKED by Linden inner tube sales platform on water) AND at other end of sim: (Linden Dam and waterfall)*(Most of sim for sale - both sides of waterway)
35) Enceladus (Alot of sim for sale)
36) Bragg
37) Steamboat
38) Whiskey
**39) Clarksburg (Down Waterfall) (Nearly full sim for sale with waterfront property)
40) Ross
41) Biscay
42) Kara
43) Barents (Nice Pirate ships in the water)
44) Amudsen
45) Lakeview
46) Drawbridge
47) Ionian
48) Azvoz
49) Agean
50) Adriatic
51) Bothnia
52) Lily
**53) Sutherland(Linden Damn blocking waterway along with a huge prim from a residential rental group)
**54) Wakely(Linden Bridge touches the water - no clearance for boats). Sutherland is one of those unfortunate sims where the Lindens sold the waterway to residents. If the DPW moves the bridge up in Wakely and deletes the damn in Sutherland - I am sure that the resident would move her prim and we could boat through here.
55) Hume
56) Inga
57) Kariba
58) Itaipu
59) Mactaquac
60) Oyster
61) Sawdel(waterfront Parcel for sale)(I used to own alot of this land. Much respect for the owners that kept the water clear since 2005)
62) Nepessing (large waterfront abandoned parcel)
Bear(BACK TO STARTING POINT)

Great idee.

Did you visit also the garmisch sim?
The waterway is VERY small over there.
Don't even think that you can use the smalles boat in SL over there.

It did look rather narrow. I flew the course. I think my speedboat could fit but not my 10-passenger cruiser. I will modify the notes to indicate to DPW that we need a little terraforming in that passage.

I think the Linden publicity machine would love to spin this. Tie it in with their xstreet.com boat sales, contact all of the waterway land owners on the route and get them involved. Make MAINLAND BOATING DAY a quarterly event.

It is nice to see that the obstructions are not coming from any of our neighbors (only Oyster had some over-zealous security systems that went out onto Linden-owned water). So the 7 obstructions are all Linden-designed on this particular route.

If anyone has a hankering to give this a shot please feel free to take out a small sailboat from my dock in Pine...

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Pine/99/97/82

... room for a couple of passengers and easy to sail. Light on prims but sim crossings can still be "interesting" so I suggest you de-script your avatar some :)

Sailboat will de-rez if the cap'n stands so be ready for a dunking if not careful.

Exploring the coastline and waterways in a slow boat is a very relaxing and interesting way to pass the time. Enjoy.

Cheers,
Rime

ps: I know - I still didn't figure out how to do links properly :o

I've got a friend who is very much into boating, in spite of being put off by the elitist attitude that prevails.

She often tells me how the Blake sims, (which as I understand it, are privately owned but part of the mainland at reduced tier due to some sort of eleventh hour arrangement made by LL and the SFF--correct me if I'm wrong) are always being commandeered for unannounced races and virtually unusable by anyone but the sailing FIC.--In spite of a blog post that they were intended to promote sailing for all.

I don't know about that, but I DO know that when I tried to watch one of their races from an aerial vantage point in the middle of the course over the lake, I was chased away.

It's all well and good to have mainland sim courses--Isn't that one of the things the protected water sims were meant for? In fact, I've got a bunch of maps that show races traced out, and from my beach, I can see a number of those green and red buoy's that mark the courses.

But I sure hope no one starts taking it upon themselves to chase people off the course composed of ENTIRELY LINDEN OWNED AND PROTECTED SIMS. Because I have another friend who has assured me that if such a thing happens, he'll disrupt the races with automated sailboat hunter killer drones.

You have been teleported home by the object 'HomeSecurity(TM) Orb' on the parcel 'Fallingwater'.
[6:04] Teleport completed from http://slurl.com/secondlife/Oyster/209/86/74
[6:06] Second Life: Your object 'seagull fishing boat v5 engine' has been returned to your inventory lost and found folder by Cloud 9 on Oyster Bay from parcel 'Fallingwater' at Oyster 209, 85 due to parcel auto return.

I did not find that relaxing at all. LOL

... so you are not reading the websites where ALL races are announced, you are not a member of the group where ALL races are announced, and it is that group's fault?

I know! Me too. If I can get close enough to this 'Fallingwater' parcel to get the owner's name I will inform him/her of that thing - it's deadly.

"could"? "at least one"?

I know of at least 4 long cruises, long enough to keep you busy for the better part of an afternoon unless you use a powerboat...

1. caddo->mowry through the mallard river
2. from debelox around gaeta
3. the blake-nautilus ocean race
4. Hollywood-Nautilus-Sailors Cove

25 groups is wrong with that picture. Make a blog for the announcements or use one of those info joiners where no group slot is used. Make a reasonable effort to include and inform everyone.

Nautilus! That's some noobie sim. I'm talking old skool mainland. With character and flair. 2004, 2005 - Living history. The plan back then was to allow sailing - then it all went fubar. 7 small fixes and the project can see an actual positive conclusion - 4 years late - but better late than never.

Lance, when you get a chance do a sim count on those routes - let's see how many you can get through without obstruction.

ok, caddo-mowry and back is only 34 sims... but no obstructions. and challenging in a sailboat.

on the other hand, Debelox - around gaeta - back to debelox is 99 Sims, no obstructions other than some narrow spots where you wish you had rezzed a smaller boat than a tradewind.

Blake Sea Atlantic - around nautilus and back is another 50 sims, no obstructions.

From Hollywood to nautilus and then Sailors Cove - estimated 80 Sims, no obstructions.

Your point was?

A list of sims that one passes through, dude - not just throwing out random numbers. But sounds nice if its true. But the original mainland deserves the same deal - that was (and still is) my point. Those noob sims have real protected waterways. The original mainland does not - yet no resident is obstructing this route - and that, in itself, is amazing. DPW can make it work and give themselves a pat on the back for the effort.

According to my friend--(I can't be bothered to compete. I cruise a little for scenery in my Tako, and could care less that it's considered "obsolete.";) Is she a member of all the groups? I don't know that for certain. But according to her the Blake sims are never free. The only experience I've had with it directly is what I related--being told to move from a comfortable vantage point.

Here is a sample of my first attempt to get through a spot on the old mainalnd waterways (Start from the bottom up)

DEAD END
Grindlewald(Down waterfall)
Durango
Grouse(waterfall)(waterfront Land for sale)
Cottonwood
Rossa
Porto Tolle(waterfront land for sale)
Nonantola (there is a 4096M tree house in the middle of the waterway with banlines on - but you can squeeze by it)
Boobantola is the end of the world over here so hug the coastline
Finale Emilia
**Here we run into a problem. Between Finale Emilia and Clisa there is no sim - so no way to get across. We could hug the coastline and go through Rossa and Sienso Tala - but sadly there is a huge prim platform covering both sims for a bathroom store. (Perhaps he can be convinced to open up a boating pathway here. I think A dock would enhance his store.
Rossa (unpassable by resident platform on water)
Sienso Tala (unpassable by resident platform on water)
Meilan Bay
Clissa
_________________________________

The missing sim and the 2 fully covered sims killed this route. I like the final route because you get to experience tropics, snowy mountains, forestry areas and you even go through one role play area.

How would you resolve the Tethys dam? It's not possible to boat up or down it, and changing the water levels would mean one side of the river was no longer a river.

You're more likely to get a significant mainland boating route that's really navigable in the eastern supercontinent. It would only require a dozen or so OpenSpaces.

On the other hand some Linden might get a great idea to solve the waterfall.

Could you add your list to this Jira "Meta-issue - filling in the bottlenecks for boating"?

don't "dude" me.

and if you can't be bothered to open the map to find your way on your own, stick to RC boats. just FYI: caddo-mowry is on sansara.

the "comfortable vantage point" during races is on the spectator stands. If you fly over the actual race course you will show up on the competitors minimaps.

and the blake sims are always free as long as you stay out of the way of races. the whole area is way bigger than the handful of sims where the race in question is being held.
