......There are some places in Secondlife that are magical, and some places that defy explanation and reason. I have found such a place. It's called Avatar island.
#1. Why do I see this place in a poor light? Well let me explain a bit. They sell a product that claims to be able to put your real face on a avatar from Secondlife, But what do you really get for your 2700 linden credits which is about $12.00 UsD. You get a texture that they have digitized from a photo that you sent to them. Does this photo/texture really look like you when they are done? Well the answer is a big no when you start to consider the construction of an avatar in Secondlife. What this company does not provide is a the eyes or the rest of the body for the texture and this leaves just the skin.
What you get is the face cheeks the forehead and ears, and not really even the ears as they do not really provide you with any real 3d data that can be used to construct a true avatar shape. There are plenty of skins on Secondlife that can be had for free, or you can pay as much as you want, and these skins are full body and have a quality that far surpasses what you can get on Avatar Island. So before you go plunking down the lindens for something that you can buy else where, or if you have the talent to make your own skins for your Secondlife avatar, and the templates are free from Secondlife to do just this sort of thing, think twice before making a purchase from Avatar Island and the CyberExtruder gimmick.
Now for #2. Why have all these people been banned from Avatar island? Could it be that these people have bought the product and felt that they have not recieved what it is they have paid for and this is what happens to a Secondlife resident when they make a complaint or ask for their money back. Maybe it could be the management and sim owners who do not see the a value of a community of Secondlife residents. Remember that your giving this company real money. If you have complaints you might want to call the company directly for a full refund, although sending emails to the company usually leads to no response and they do not provide any real support for foreign visitors either.
#3. Also this is a Secondlife entry point for new players that seems to be a huge bottleneck and a way to trap people into a marketing ploy.
Hey! Linden Labs Wake Up! You got a bad entry portal with a lot of traffic and no value.

Oh good god. If you gave out RL personal information on anyone here, you would be IP banned so quick your head would spin. I wouldn't be suprised if you aren't suspended from the forums for violating the ToS without any thought. Edit - And in response to your #2 problem, 2700L's is not bad for a custom made skin that will make your AV look almost like the RL you. I would never personally do this because this is SL and not RL. Why look like me in 2 places? lol. The fact is, this is your opinion. The ban list is there for other reasons. Ever think that some of these people are Spampires? Griefers? People stealing textures? There are a number of reasons to ban someone from land... not because they are unhappy with a product. |

This thread is fun not for the reasons of the original post. (Sorry- a company is allowed to sell junk as long as it doesn't lie or mislead about the junk it's selling. I was interested the first time I heard about the product, but it only took me about five minutes of reading about it before buying to discover the flaws you mentioned.)
What is fun is that I had to go see if the advertising for the product has changed, and I found the company has been awarded a patent for coverting digital images from 2D to 3D. So it has a new patent on something I've been able to do with Poser for- what, about ten years now? That's funny. |

Thats the truth, and the truth will set you free Thank you. To be clear, I wasn't actually positively supporting your post. It would be one thing to share your bad experience with the product. A post like that would probably be welcomed, no one likes to waste money on a disappointing product. And in fact, Linden Lab should take notices, because it has at least unofficially endorsed the product. (Didn't Phillip Linden show off his photo-to-skin at an in-world speech, endorsing it as the next great technology in Second Life?) However, you go too far by naming all the people associated with the product, and way way too far by listing everyone who has been banned from the island, and you are way way way off course to assume they were all banned because they complained about the product. Edit it out all the latter, and you might have have a useful discussion. |
