Opening a new front in this philosophical discussion..... As well as the SL/RL interface, we have the question of virtual reality vs virtual unreality in-world. I was on a beach where a cartoony looking man turned up and was criticised for looking unrealistic. SL is a fantasy world with possibilities that don't exist in RL. But I can understand after someone has spent hours making a believable looking (but technologically impossible in RL terms) hovership, they might be a little dismayed to see someone else floating by on a pink transclucent cube!

ROFL I was standing outside my favourite 'british' pub talking with a pretty girl, both in our photo-rendered skins and sensible clothing .. and Bugs Bunny walked past LOL Terrific character (the account holder I mean) and a great laugh. SL cracks me up

From: bilbo99 Emu I hear you Daisy but I just can't quite agree. Thankfully profiles in SL are rather quick and easy to change if you suddenly realise you've left something for misinterpretation but for your example are you speaking of SL groups? Are there any other than RP ones in opposition? All mine are just clubs for entertainment. Frankly I can't say for sure whether reading a profile is an advantage or not. For me it just puts a different slant on things the same way I know someone's name before speaking to them. No-one's opened a conversation with me with the words 'from your profile ..' I don't think it would bother me one way or the other. It's usually a 'hi bilb' In my example, yes, I was referring to RP groups. But there can be other sorts of information in a profile that may be a giveaway in ways unintended ... verb. sap. ... I do think it's very useful to put certain types of information in your profile about what sort of encounters you welcome and don't welcome. And yes, I have had people open conversations on things from my profile, plenty of times. That's fine by me.

Same here, Daisy and usually that leads to interesting conversations, last night I met a beautiful Elf and we talked for a while...turned out that he lives one block away from me in RL!! Mandy C

From: bilbo99 Emu Ooooh if only RL!! Him: I must be your slave! Her: Here, .. <grunt> carry these!!!! lol Unfortunately, those, erm, conversations tend to degrade rapidly into something like, "So why don't we go back your dungeon so you can beat me for a while?" Among other things...

Im one of the few guys that would like help with this world and the first person I met is a girl. She used friendship and being nice to get me to buy a couple of things for 2500Ls. I saw right through the pushy side and told her money is not important it is the relationship. She tried to sell me a house telling me you have to have one. I am a bit nieve in SL but learning fast. This house happened to be in an area that you could lose life. Soon as I paid her for the items, but not the house, she pulled a gun and shot me which sent me back to where I set home. She said just kidding.... teleported me back and shot me again. She was on my friends list and she took herself off. I lost the Ls and that house is fenced off private.
Nice world SL is!! I want to build houses and custom bikes so I am sticking with it.

I don’t have an SL character, I am just me as I am in RL but with the obvious communication restrictions in SL.
I do think SL is a fantasy world and if you choose to have a character or take on a role unlike your RL self, then that’s what it’s all about. You don’t have to be yourself if you don’t want to.
I haven’t really met anyone horrible in SL, just the odd sleazy male looking for cartoon sex.
I think it’s as in RL, it takes time to get to know people and it takes time to build trust in any relationship, regardless of what the fundamentals of the relationship are based on. Just have fun, enjoy chatting with people and keep an open mind

I don't do relationships in RL or SL anymore..Not until i finish a few goals i set for myself so i don't have to be Dependant on any man..
most girls are fighting for husbands and shopping in middle school where i live and are married right out of high school..then divorced by 25 with kids.. I almost fell into that trap a few times..
I'll Date in SL and RL and i may get close with someone in SL which i have more than a few times in SL..But i know well enough that for me it's just a Time bomb that will go off one day if you have no real communication in-person..i have lots of friends and we date here and there and we do fun things and we have for a long time..once that line is crossed and it is only the two of us the clock starts to tick and i always end up losing a really good friend i had..so i don't do relationships in SL or RL anymore..they last longer for me this way..

Them: "Where are you from?" Me: "A womb" Them: "A womb? what's that? (sometimes where's that)" Me: "Usually inside a mother" Them: "I mean, where from real life?!" Me: "Same place" Them: "Same place as what?" Me: "As before" Them: "You're weird/f'ed up/etc, etc" Me: "Thanks! It was better before my medication, but now I can really shine" Them: "You are just being a b*tch.. I'm going to report you" Me: "Cool! I just need another 12 more AR's before I can get the toaster" Them: "........"
Then I usually continue on what I was doing.. ^^

I guess this is really one of those YMMV things. I tend to ask the "where are you from" question early on, certainly not the *first* question by any means. But it just gives me a frame of reference. I tend to socialize with several people in completely different timezones from myself, and knowing that it's 2 am for them (and that they've probably had a few too) puts things in perspective for me.
I don't ask other RL questions until I've really gotten to know someone but the general "where are you from" question never bothers me, nor has my asking it appeared to bother hardly anyone. If I get a "The Universe" or some other flippant answer, then I just move on... though it rarely happens.
I guess in the circles I'm in, people WANT to talk about not only where they're from, but what part of the country they're from, the weather, their sports teams, etc. etc.

What's with the necroposts lately? Did some microbe-bearing asteroid strike the forums infecting old threads with zombiness? OK, back to your discussion. ZOMBIES!!

Then I usually continue on what I was doing.. ^^ OMG this is great lol I think that question is the one that drove me nuts more than anything .. i used to act like i was from a different place every time at one point my first year.. you had to make a game of it because it was the first question always asked of you.. Them:Where are you from? Me:Heeeeeeh? Them:Where are you from? me: Speak up i can't hear a thing you are saying Them: o.O ????????????????????

From: Ceka Cianci Them:Where are you from? Me:Heeeeeeh? Them:Where are you from? me: Speak up i can't hear a thing you are saying Them: o.O ???????????????????? That is so seriously funny ... ! I think to follow the original trend of the thread, I tend to 'hang loose' with my friends, sometimes very serious discussions may take place which can encroach on very personal and private issues, but I remain 'that friend', not allowing the depth of communication to infer a more intimate relationship (at least on the emotional level anyway). Seems to be working for me anyway.
