If I have someone nearby who is causing a very high avatar rendering cost, I find I may need to mute them to keep my low spec system going - just to get rid of the overhead.

I mute people that leave their mic open and you can hear everything their doing like : yelling at their kids, kids crying, talking to someone in rl, and eating/drinking. The eating drinking one is most annoying it sounds so nasty listening to someone crunch and munch and slurp like a cow. While I was at a store there was a foreign lady flirting with some guy in open chat with her mic open and her kid was crying the entire time.

I mute people that leave their mic ......

Which prompts me the consider that I'm not a laid back individual who very rarely mutes.
I'm closer to Argent's "darn near everything". :)

I mute *all the sound* of SL.
- Whooshes, ding-dings, music, the lot!

In RL I'm listening to news, talk, music on the radio. I'm on the phone. No way do I want my computer spewing noise at me when I don't need to hear the noises. Very occasionally, I turn on sound to listen to an audio stream if the tracks are a topic of conversation in a place.
I tried voice but found that apart from the poor quality, it worked to severely limit my RL audio inputs for no good purpose.

I solve that problem by deleting the SLVoice executable so I'm not even tempted to enable voice. As a bonus, I get fewer crashes since I deleted it.

I don't mute "darn near everything", I mute when I have to, that's all. I think you misread something somewhere.

I've only ever muted like 3 people for being complete asshats, but mostly my mute list has tons of annoying objects like greeters, talking tummy's, spammy genitals, spankers, etc.. stuff I don't care to have invade my chat space.

Nobody currently muted. I have muted people that insist on gesture spam or constant hooting and howling at a party or club, though often I will simply leave those places. In one place I lived, we had neighbors that shouted all the time, so they were all on my mute list.

Verbal abuse.

And, at times, out of control gesture spam in a club. If it is so constant I can't even see regular chat, let alone have to listen to Hoooo or I love this tuuuuune instead of the actual TUNE, then it's a form of griefing in my book. I wish clubs would ban it altogether.

If the sounds of these bother you and you'd rather not mute the people saying them, you can turn your sounds down in preferences > audio & video or hit the little up arrow on the music control to open up the slider bars there. I usually keep my sounds about halfway and can't hear those gestures over the music.

As for my mute list, it only contains objects, mostly lucky chairs, copybot defeaters and sploders if I had to be around them for an extended time.

Oops! It was intended to be a humorous reference to your posting
"People who mute darn near everything are broadly offensive."
I should have quoted the entire thing. I understood what you were saying perfectly.

The only thing I ever muted was my neighbors peacock, which squaked constantly near our property lines. And, they were never inworld as far as I was able to tell. Utterly annoying to listen to.

Completely resolved when they put the land up for sale and I quickly scooped it up :)

Merely curious what people think is reasonable to mute for:

I find it very calming to mute people who use three gestures in the span of minute, talking bellies, griefers, spammers,

yeah that! plus annoying and irritating bisshes and sex maniacs and technically i need to mute anything or anyone that causes lag :(...but its temporary though till i get a new puter

I mute people who need attention so badly they go about it all wrong, like the juvenile (at least in maturity level) who ran around a welcome area in a constant state of unsightly and loud pooping.
Since he wasn't kicking dirt and grass over it afterward it could only be a failed attention getting ploy. It was gratifying that everyone else was ignoring his, uh -- rear end too.

I also mute noisy devices, like the yellow submarine that appeared next door to my gallery on land that was set to infinite return time. It kept spewing the first line of the Beatles song over and over. Fortunately it was physical so I could roll it slowly and painfully uphill to my land and then return it.

Mute is a blessing and far less obnoxious than the banning, freezing, or ejecting that people get so trigger happy with.

Being a fiery redhead with a temper to match, I may mute someone just because I'm tired of listening to them. ;) I have found that less stressful than continuing to argue...errr...discuss something with someone when I know neither of us are going to budge on our positions.

Periodically I go through and wipe my mute list clear.

I also mute for many of the reasons already noted.

Thanks - Actually I usually play my own music if I go SL dancing - which I haven't been feeling like doing of late anyway. But sometimes I want to hear the club's music. I don't like having to mess with the audio sliders, every time I go to/leave a club. On some sims the aural ambience is nice. I like the ambient sound usually. For me, it's a lot easier and also a bit satisfying, to zap the offenders and leave my settings as they are.

I'll let a few Hooooos go by but constant, repetitive spam - I can't zap it fast enough. I don't feel bad about it either - what am I missing except grief.

Elora: I found silent peacocks and they are a lot nicer looking than any other I have seen also. I was happy because I thought they were a pretty addition to land but the cawing was annoying, as you say.

I generally mute sounds that are repetitive, annoying and loop over and over forever- loud waterfalls that sound like scratches on a LP, bird sounds, trains, announcements etc

Others like fake sounding horse whinneys that sound like a human doing it falsetto, horse clip clops that sound like someone beating a picket fence with a stick while riding a bike past, and other poorly recorded repetitive sounds a certain brand of horse makes...

I also mute auto play music and the like too, people put a lot of stupid sounds and music that auto play and loop over and over to the annoyance of visitors.

99% of what I mute are also objects.

People need to go extremely far to make me mute them.

That actually might not have been his fault..I seem to recall an item on xstreet that you wore..selected an individual and it made them poop as they walked..they couldnt turn it off , unless you chose to stop it (yes, a form of griefing i suppose) Might have been that he had, but maybe he was just as you thought :)

my mute list is pretty small, a sure fire way to make it though is tp'ing me to vote & pay for your photo in a comp (without even asking me just sending the tp? tsk)

tp'ing me to a club-again with no prior conversation/invite

cursing/rudeness/abusive behaviour- encountered only twice in 2 years- not bad!

Greeters, word spammers, griefers and the likes of them are not necessary the top of my mute list.

Likewise, I would not mute acquaintances or strangers especially for those who speak before their minds think; would love to see them shooting at their own feet. Reasoning is not much of a help if they are not helping themselves.

Mute function is more for someone - a close friend - who does something damaging to his/ her integrity, and/ is a myopic bigot; something I can do without.
