I wonder if they're allowed to do that, or if Torley was an exception or skirted the rules somehow... Now I'm curious about that too!

Possibly he just laid it down and told them if they wanted him, they would have to do it.

Can a Linden really run a SL business with an alt? Isn't that kinda a conflict of interests?

Potentially.. but the are humans (aren't they? :) ), for many of them second life is exactly what is for us outside their working times (for Linden Lab), so i don't think there's anything wrong if they run a business as we are, since they are running it with their "alt" with no god power of the linden account. So, if they not use their "linden power" for a personal profit (and im sure they would be fired for this), it's all ok.
Probably they would have a sort of advantage whenever they won't... in example knowin informations and news that are directed related to their job, but that happens for the real world too.. i mean if i work for a car constructor i would pay these cars less than any other else.. and this is fair.

Does Mango Linden love mangos, or was it actually trying to get over a fear of mangos?

Haven't you seen that SNL skit?

"I am Mango."

I keep seeing Torley...but as soon as I arrive he/she goes poof. Saw him/her at Moose beach the other day in the Bay Sim...totally deserted beach...saw me VAMOOSH..Torley is the only Linden ive ever seen in world(well apart from the ones at my mentor training, thats not like casual/social so doesnt count)

Yeah, I've seen Torley at random more than any other Linden. One thing about the *poofing*, is Torley takes hours sometimes to just go back to spots & take screenshots...real fast Sim-Hopping...also Torley gets PMed so much, that answering every little question we would have on our minds to ask when we see him, would hinder his job performance, even though I have noticed that he TRIES to answer all questions when he can.

I have met a few, and seen a LOT of Lindens @ work in my time on SL...but then, I go snoop in thier profiles, and find out the spots in their "Picks" a lot of times, are places I visit on a regular basis, or used to, coincidentally.

I'm just waitin' ta see a Neo Linden myself...or a Morpheus Linden

I don't think it would be a conflict of interest if you were cleaning the bathrooms at the San Francisco office and also sold virtual bathroom fixtures on the grid.

Obviously those who change the price of regions shouldn't be in the land business &c &c but I don't think there is a lot of crossover there.

Why would it be? Lindens have time off from work just like the rest of us, and if they choose to 'play the game' in their off time, why couldn't they run a business if they wanted? Do you honestly think that they would use their Linden account to steal from other people's inventories? Do you think they would honestly risk their RL job? I run a business, and if I became a Linden, I would hope that I could continue to run it, although, I'd give it up to go to work for them if I had to. You're making the assumption that someone would abuse the system just by being given the chance. That's not the case. I have the capacity to steal other people's work just like alot of other people in SL, but I would NEVER think of actually doing it. I certainly wouldn't want people stealing my stuff, and while I cannot control others, I can certainly do the ethical thing and not abuse the knowledge I have to steal other people's stuff. I believe most people out there are ethical enough not to steal other people's work, and I would assume Linden Lab employees are ethical in that respect, or, if anything, not willing to risk loosing their job trying to make a few extra bucks on the side by stealing other people's work. Although I can't say for certain, I'm sure at some point during new employee orientation they cover what is allowed and what isn't, and make clear any consequences of abuse.

OK,

Since we are not supposed to link to archives here is a screenshot of Robin's answer that I received:

So all in all it looks like they covered the bases to be sure things are fair.

I think I might give up all my business dealings on sl to be an official linden, because the main reason I'm in sl is for the love of sl. I'd keep freebie paradise if I could though, but thats non-profit.

I think it's great that some Lindens run businesses, there's no better way for them to develop empathy with "transaction failure" issues.

There are a few forum participants whom I would like to nominate to be Lindens for specific projects -- areas where LL is missing a bet that would help them, or where a person has a particular skillset that SL could use. But ... hmmmm .... I don't see an email from anyone at LL asking for my advice :)

There seems to be the idea that LL doesn't realize, or care about transaction failures when the asset servers go down. They do, and despite it not seeming as though they do, a real solution IS in the works. I brought up this VERY THING when I spoke with Philip Linden, and he let me know that addressing the asset system is a major concern, and a real solution is in the works. The solution involves setting up multiple asset server systems around the world. This will serve two purposes, one, it will improve ping times in places where they're bad, like Asia and Australia, and, should one server set go down, the others will be there to seamless take up the slack, making asset issues a thing of the past. So, in the future, should there be a problem, you'll likely not even notice that it's down because the others will be taking up the slack instantly, and automatically.

NICE...even though M Linden is technically still in the orientation phase, I have noticed that they are movin' a LOT faster than they ever have to improve the user experience. Hopefully when M is ready, things will get even better.

All this reminds me of my very first days as a resident: For weeks I was really believing that "the Lindens" were in fact members of a RL family named Linden who did all this as a hobby or so. It took at least a month if not more until I came behind the truth....

For a while I didn't know the Lindens referred to people at all..just the money. And when I found out they were people, I thought they'd abandoned SL or something, because I never saw one. I still haven't seen one without them coming to me for support or me wandering around the Linden Village areas for hours and hours :D

If theres not already a Sarah Linden, I'm calling dibs here. If LL happens to hire a Sarah before they realize they need me, I'm gonna have to cut the bitch.

I just had to put those 2 next to each other because it had me laughing so much. Love, rainbows, and an occasional shiv to keep people in line. I'd vote for that.

You used to see Lindens around inworld much more often - probably before the days of the Live Support chatline being removed from the world and put on the web.

I remember that you'd occasionally see a Linden walking around in the resident sandboxes, and one time just after the update that enabled HUDs, Philip Linden was in the Ahern WA chatting with people about how the patch went. :)

Yep. Personally I sat through two "Linden Swarms" like I used ta call 'em... both times "Governor Linden" was in-world helping a about 3 other Lindens move crap from one high traffic Sim to another (not far from Welcome Area of course). It used to be so that I couldn't go for more than 2 weeks without seein' a Linden, even if I stayed away from "Linden Locations".

I'd never become a Linden though...I don't think they are allowed to post on the forums. Horrors!

I'd consider it if it paid something you could live on. But if I ever did, there is no way I would use this name.
