Lindens' names

So, I totally decided that I'm gonna be a Linden (Cause y'know, I totally have that power) and was wondering how they come up with their names.

I mean, some I know like M Linden is Mark, etc, but the more random or obscure.

Is Blue Linden's favorite colour blue? Does Mango Linden love mangos, or was it actually trying to get over a fear of mangos?

Is Neuro Linden really smart? Or neurotic?

Does anyone know the reasons behind the names of some of the Lindens, aside from the 'normal named' ones? Or even interesting stories behind he normal-ish ones?

I'd love to know!

I think they can choose their own names when they take the job.

Many are the person's real name (eg, Philip Linden = Philip Rosenberg).

Torley Linden is the only resident to have become a Linden and then used their account's old name (Torley Torgueson) as their Linden name.

I wonder if they're allowed to do that, or if Torley was an exception or skirted the rules somehow... Now I'm curious about that too!

Torley _was_ an exception - she was the only occasion when a regular resident's existing account was RENAMED to "Linden". (Normally if a resident becomes a Linden, they are given a Linden alt.)

I think many choose to have a new name because they don't want everyone who knew their original av to know that they're a Linden now. Also, there used to be a list of certain things that people with Linden avs weren't allowed to do (even with non-Linden alts), one of which was to run an inworld business (to prevent ulterior motives), but that might have changed now.

Torley was a VERY popular resident before the move to be a Linden. He also had a huge forum presence.

They made the exception to keep the name based on that popularity (as I recall) but there were some issues involved when they changed the name (not sure excactly what) so they said it would not happen again. Torley will likely go down in SL history as the only resident turned Linden that got to keep the name.

I know Plexus told me he liked the meaning of the word the Plexus so that is why he uses it

Yep, that has changed. Lindens can have businesses in world as alts including land sellers. The key according to Robin when I posed the question of the ethical issues in Linden Answers here on the forum (when that section was here) was that they can not exchange money from Linden accounts to their alts or vice versa. Also they cannot use insider information to get an advantage over other residents.

I know one linden for a fact that has an in world business on their alt (non linden account)

I have been there, know both their linden and non linden avatars

so I guess that is one rule that is gone, also they used to never be allowed to disclose their non linden accounts, but I know a few and their alt non linden account as well

Mmmhmm. Another thing Robin told me was that it was very difficult to get some high profile SL business owners of the time to become Lindens. They were making so much off the businesses that they didn't want to lose that income. Even if that meant being a Linden lol.

EDIT: Of course not all or even a bunch of those business owners were offered Linden positions. Just a few that were did not want to make the move.

A good number of Lindens were regular Joe Avatar's before joining LL, and often times carry their first name over and take on the last name Linden when they 'join the team'. Others, choose their first name the same way you and I did when we created our accounts, taking into consideration they cannot have a name that already exists.

I talk to Lindens all the time. Just last week I gave Torley a clock, which you can check out on his flickr or slbuzz photo streams, and I spent a good 40 minutes or so chatting with Philip Linden last week as well. I have a picture of both up on my blog at http://www.secondscripter.com

if i was hired as a Linden, i would totally not tell a single soul. altho, folks might recognize me by my style..... but i wold deny deny deny.

I too speak to a lot of lindens, too many to try to list hehe

some I keep in touch with more than others, no different than any other resident, other than they work there

to me it is the same as any other business, if I visit say the grocery store and know a cashier, I am not gonna treat her any differently than someone else I know that might be in the store at the same time.

If theres not already a Sarah Linden, I'm calling dibs here. If LL happens to hire a Sarah before they realize they need me, I'm gonna have to cut the bitch.

hey, i was at your nerdy slum house sim (i forget the actual name, but i bet you know the one i mean) the other day. it's pretty neat, but i don't "get" what's happening in the middle.

i wonder if there's a 3Ring Linden? i bet there is a list as long as santa's arm trying to get 3Ring Linden as their name. doesn't it figure? LOL

The things i know/supposed to know:

- A good number of Lindens were regular residents (obviously...):
- They can still have their ex account, but it does not have to interact in any way with the LL job;
- As opposite, they cannot run a iw business with the Linden account (buy lands, run a store, etc.)... but i've seen some advertising their business with a Linden account (eg: profile...) ;
- Their (eventual) other account is not "secret", it's up to their decision revealing it or not, most of them does not for a series of reasons...;

Can a Linden really run a SL business with an alt? Isn't that kinda a conflict of interests?

I mean, many Lindens can surely get access to other people's inventories, go on land with barriers up etc. Would make checking out what the opposition is up to very easy. And the possibility of borking things for them - well, it doesn't bear thinking about.

It has been a long time since I saw a Linden in-game (Concierge Party excepted). I remember talking to Jack at the Morris Welcome Area quite a few times. Data was a regular there too, and the cute child one, I forget her name. Philp sometimes showed up too, and would chat to us, he was a good sport as many people would 'bait' him.

And many of the 'Live Help' team (ah,those were the days) would often come and assist with things. Oh and Torley! Always such fun, always so helpful. We were all so pleased when she/he was made a full Linden. Interesting that the one Linden who was a well-known pre-Linden resident is now probably the best known Linden and the most popular.

I know so many residents who have never ever seen a single Linden employee. If you joined after about 2006 you may well be the same. Shame really a

I keep seeing Torley...but as soon as I arrive he/she goes poof. Saw him/her at Moose beach the other day in the Bay Sim...totally deserted beach...saw me VAMOOSH..Torley is the only Linden ive ever seen in world(well apart from the ones at my mentor training, thats not like casual/social so doesnt count)

My partner is CONVINCED iam a Linden already...not sure why, maybe because i never complain about them

I personally know one Linden who has an alt (and the identity of that alt). To protect their privacy, I won't identify either.

If ever I got a job as a Linden, I'd keep the identity a closely guarded secret. I don't think I'd even admit to getting the job in public. I most certainly wouldn't call myself Stealth Linden.
