If you organized your inventory, how long would it take?

There was no category for how many days it would take.

I joined SL about two years ago. As soon as I get it organized I'll let you know. :o

I do have one folder with multiple sub-folders where I keep my important/favorite stuff. Also, I'll go in and delete some dupliactes and junk every once in a while, but that's get boring very quickly so it's always a work in progress.

I upload a lot of textures, and make a lot of things. If I don't keep it organized it would quickly get way out of hand. Once a week or so, I 'do my filing'. It takes about an hour usually.

tried a couple times to organize it, failed

so now I just let it go and don't worry about it

over 35,000 items the last time I looked.

someday I might do something about it... or not *shrug*

Imagine the money you could make it the technology existed to allow you to organize someone els's inventory, for a fee.

I did the 2-3 hour one cause depends on if I am out and buying textures. if I am buying textures then it does take longer cause I categorize my textures before I put them in teh organizer.

I do the majority of my sorting on Sundays. Just sit around watching chat and doing my inventory. But if it has been a week where alot of stuff has been happening like building exploring and such I will sort before Sunday.

I put everything I get into my !Go Through folder right away. My landmarks are on notecards. So easier to tell what is new in there. My Notecards have their own folders so again easier to tell what is new in there.

Yah can you tell I like to organize my inventory :D

Bec

I have never, and likely will never, organize my inventory. The closest I've come to it was shoving all my snapshots into a subfolder, and that had an actual reason when I did it.

I just don't see the point... if it's something I like, I remember part of the name (Haven't really run into problems with that, yet, in 2 years...). If I don't like it, I have no reason to remember it, so I don't.

If I can't recall a name, for some odd reason, I look through the folder names, since tons of objects put themselves into their own folders when bought, and either find or don't find it.

No point deleting things, the object still exist, whether in my inventory or not, so meh.

My Mistress does hers and it takes her forever, though.

Technically there's a way to do this with objects. You could script a 'sorter' object to search the names of it's inventory, and find ones that start with 'A', for instance, and shove them all into another object, labelled 'A'. Repeat for all other letters.

Going more complex, you could even sort by type, then name, or other criteria altogether. True, it doesn't check for 'crap' items, but it certainly does organize it quite nicely. If you don't like objects being containers, you could create folders for each 'result' object, and just drag it's inventory into it.

Considerably faster than doing similar by hand, and relatively configurable. You could have it check for items with specific words in the name, like 'free', or your favorite colour, and so on and so forth. I would honestly be very surprised if nobody has attempted this in-world already.

Everything I do on my computers is filed in a scrupulous document tree. The computers are arranged in a pecking order with the Mac at the top and my PC at the bottom of the data chain strictly for internet usage.

Before I leave a store in SL the product will be filed in the appropriate folder and even under the creator's name if there are a number of sources I buy from. Even then I will file it according to type. If it's copiable, I keep the original where it is and make the modified version in an appropriate folder.

I don't buy or keep no mod items.

For my own stuff, I always use an easily modifiable file name I'm likely to understand in three or four years time and related files go into a similar folder on the Mac where I do all my real work.

If something is crap I make a note of the creator in their profile, dump it and empty my trashcan before I close the session.

I'd, at least, move those folders into some "fixed" folder (the ones you can't delete). If for one reason and one reason only: so there is less chance for them to be deleted. I started as Sonia long time ago. LL ate all of my inventory that was not in the "fixed" folders, and a small portion of those items in the "fixed' folder. Something like 20% (or less) of the items outside the permanent folders disappeared (folders stayed, items in folders disappeared), and something like 80% of the items in the permanent folders stayed.

I have yet to have anything eaten by SL, or, I at least have yet to notice. So.. I don't bother =P

I think I went from something like 20-30K to about . . oh . . 3K because of LL eating my, or Sonia's inventory.

And I hadn't lost anything before that point either.

I recentlt spent the better part of a DAY just trying to organize the clothing in my inventory. Forget about anything else. Just the clothes. And still wasn't done after that effort! And I wasn't exactly disorganized to start with.

Probably a good 6 months of solid sorting ought to do it. I'm running around 80k items now and probably 75% of that is not fully organized.

 :o

My inventory is pretty organized. I have folders for Furniture, Plants, Poses, Hunt Items, etc. that things get filed into when I receive them. I try to keep my inventory around 10K. And I tend to sort inventory when I'm dancing at a club - where I can listen to music and do some work at the same time.

I have lots of textures which is probably about 1/2 my inventory right there. Every couple of weeks, I'll take a cursory look through everything and delete anything I don't want. I've noticed myself deleting a lot of clothes that I purchased way back when I started out in SL. What I took for good clothing back then doesn't hold a candle to what some designers have been putting out recently. Some incredibly talented ppl out there! ;)

wow at 30k i almost feel deprived!..there was no poll category for how long i really think it would take me.

What i really hate are returned linked items (sometimes when a mall closes down unexpectedly) entitled 'ball'...only to try rezzing them in a small area to find a whole huge stores worth in everyones back yards...now i go to a sandbox.
