How about, "Alters" and "Samers"? SLants and Reelies?
Woot! Better than my suggestions, except alter might mean someone who uses multiple avatars or names.

My AV is like me... but not? lol

Looks-wise I'm little bitty in RL (5'2" 95lbs), in SL I look like a Playboy playmate lol. I envy her ability to change her hair instantly with absolutely no effort. I have a couple small tattoos in RL but I think Grau would kill me if I tried to get anything like what my AV has.

Personality-wise I think I'm actually shyer in SL than I am in RL. I still feel a bit uncomfortable talking to people in SL. I led a pretty wild RL (My Dad would not have been proud of me :( ) from 18-21 that made me get over my RL shyness. I'm more tame in RL now, probably from my fiance being a huge positive influence in my life.

I can think of various scenarios that describe the av/RL relationship

A) Comes into SL as himself with an avatar that resembles himself as closely as possible.
B) Comes into SL as herself with a female avatar that represents how she'd like to look.
C) Comes into SL as herself but with a comical hippo avatar that she thinks looks funny
D) Comes into SL to do land deals and just keeps a basic newbie avatar as the avatar is just a tool.
E) Collects avatars and swaps them around all the time within the same account.
F) Has several alt accounts and uses them in roleplays and photoshoots.
D) Has a boss gangster SL persona with appropriate avatar, while nothing like that in RL
E) Has an avatar which represents his ideal girlfriend
F) Has identical twin male avatars that fulfil her twin fantasy
G) Has a giant dinosaur avatar with which he can indulge his passion for disruption and nuisance.

I could go on, but I'm already going on a bit, so I won't.

I second Perre's comment! And another poster's, due to RL circumstances and "rules" I could never be my avi in RL. Which is quite sad when you think about it. :( My avi is who I wish society would let me be with no remorse or regrett...

The choice of gender is quite interesting here.

Women who come as themselves and want their avatar to resemble themselves are apparantly rare. Women who create their ideal boyfriend are rare. Is that really true or an assumption? If it is true, why?

I wouldn't mind having my AV look like more like me. I am horrible at adjusting my shape (especially my face shape) though.

Making an ideal boyfriend might make my SO a bit uncomfortable. I have to settle on getting him all fixed up like I want instead. :-p

She's kind of a superhero image to me. She looks nothing like me, but is an embodiment of everything I respect and admire in a woman.

She brings out the very best in me most of the time.

Same here. With a more exciting career.

My appearance is pretty much just me at 21, or as close as I can get her.. Well unless I am in my full up Neko.. But that is another story... ;)
Personality is also me, but definitely a lot more free to have the life I would like to have..

A much better and wilder wardrobe.. As far to many of the clothes are for work and therefore rather conservative.. Which is probably why I love wearing some really outrageous outfits in SL.. :)

But if you meet me in SL, well you have meet the real me, or at least a reasonable facsimile.
