Excessive swear words tend to be the refuge of last resort for those people who should listen more and talk less.
I think they have little or no place on the forums. _____________________

Swear words don't bother me. The gratuitous nastiness that crops up in some of these posts does bother me. I'd happily keep the first, if we could get rid of the second.

Profanity is a part of the language; to completely eschew it limits the content that can be communicated. For example, if Tony Soprano didn't swear, he simply wouldn't make sense.
Now, one might think that this forum wouldn't need to communicate such content. One might particularly think that a technical forum like Scripting Tips wouldn't need profanity. That, however, would only be the view of one who hadn't yet experienced the full richness of LSL. ![]() |

And sometimes people can be polite, eloquent, thoughtful, and well spoken, and still speak bullshit.

It's becoming part of the language [swearing] along with any word thats made up by hip hoppers.
The only word not to be said on Aussie TV is the c word. But I guess we've got vajayjay now. Thanks Opera. _____________________

I admit, I am pretty young, and I swear more than appropriate, with no reguard to my surroundings. Wether I am in front of my mother, grandmother, ect. I DO however, try to keep it down in front of children. But that aside, I have talked like this for so long, really, half the time, I rarely notice it anymore. Through true effort, I can keep my speach clean, but it requires constant vigilence on my own part to be successful. That being said, I do not get offended by vulgarity of speach, and anyone who knows me personnaly know better than to get offended when I use it myself.
I do not see it strictly as a lack of intelect, in my case, it just developed as a habit at an early age. It kind of also depends on what kind of conversation I am in. If I am in a conversation where thinking is encouraged, my language usually stays clean. ![]() _____________________

I think things like this are culturally based to a high degree. So when someone launches into the sailor talk I always consider the context and intent. I agree there are people who would not be themselves if they stopped cussing... but I also feel it can be disrespectful in a destructive way, from a different person.
I think there is even a place for profanity in the best writing, but it should be used like habanero peppers, sparingly and with care. |

Actually, the F word can be very expressive. My favorite anecdote, which is handed down from WWII:
Big shot visiting a factory making bombers. One worker starts to use a complicated hand tool, which suddenly breaks into pieces in his hands. He throws it to the ground in exasperation, shouting, "F___! This F___ing F___er's F___ed! Three remarkable things about this: He used the same word four times in a five-word sentence; each time he used it as a different part of speech; and most remarkable of all, everyone in earshot understood exactly what he meant. Have some respect for the F word. |

I am a sailor, have been for two years now, so that should explain my language a bit.

As was stated earlier, curse words used in moderation - to show emphasis - are not offensive to me, but I *absolutely hate* the "forum-filter-friendly-f__k." For example, one poster on here loves to pepper his posts with "fuk." I can only assume it's a hold-over from other forums that filtered out the proper spelling of the word. It annoys the hell out of me. If you're going to curse, give language its proper respect and spell the word correctly. It's not like it's that hard to spell.

You ought to have been here before they cleaned the forums UP, Gaybot.
Anyway, that section of the TOS is just like all the other sections: It's there for if they want to apply it to someone they don't like; otherwise it's ignored. coco _____________________

Wow..... and we all know that Smurfette is the village whore, and Papa Smurf is her pimp, I mean, come on, she is the only female, and he is the only one with a red hat!

'vulgarity' like all things should be used... in moderation.
the proper point of it is to punctuate something with a word that has force, not just in meaning but in sound. you'll notice most words of these types are short, sharp, and invoke some cultural taboo. are there more expressive words? sure, but concise has merits too, not to mention the inherenant dismissal if I call someone a rude obnoxious, troglodyte, with the intelligence of a gnat, and the grace of a bull in a china shop.... it just doesn't have the same impact as dumbass! WARNING: overuse and/or malicious intent usually leads to the above labels being applied to you EDIT: oh god, not more red hat jokes, I thought those got left behind in the 90's _____________________

Wow..... and we all know that Smurfette is the village whore, and Papa Smurf is her pimp, I mean, come on, she is the only female, and he is the only one with a red hat! Sean Smith: Beer and p****. That's all I need. Ronald Fisher: We gotta find ourselves a Smurfette. Sean Smith: Smurfette? Ronald Fisher: Yeah, not some tight-a** Middlesex chick, right? Like this cute little blonde that will get down and dirty with the guys. Like Smurfette does. Donnie: Smurfette doesn't f***. Ronald Fisher: That's bulls***. Smurfette f***s all the other Smurfs. Why do you think Papa Smurf made her? Because all the other Smurfs were getting too horny. Sean Smith: No, no, no, not Vanity. I heard he was a homosexual. Ronald Fisher: Okay, then, you know what? She f***s them and Vanity watches. Okay? Sean Smith: What about Papa Smurf? I mean, he must get in on all the action. Ronald Fisher: Yeah, what he does, he films the g***-b***, and he b**** o** to the tape. Donnie: [shouts] First of all, Papa Smurf didn't create Smurfette. Gargamel did. She was sent in as Gargamel's evil spy with the intention of destroying the Smurf village. But the overwhelming goodness of the Smurf way of life transformed her. And as for the whole g***-b*** scenario, it just couldn't happen. Smurfs are asexual. They don't even have... reproductive organs under those little, white pants. It's just so illogical, you know, about being a Smurf. You know, what's the point of living... if you don't have a dick? Sean Smith: [pause] Dammit, Donnie. Why you gotta get all smart on us? whatta great little movie... _____________________

All this about more people swearing and cursing is nonsense. I've seen it so very few times but not enough to make a big deal or even a post about it.
As far as the question if people find it offensive the answer is hell yeah! In these forums the self proclaimed, self righteous indiviuals find anything and everything offensive regardless how small and meaningless the issue may be. As long as you're "politically correct" saying what they feel you should then it's ok. But don't you dare say anything that's really on your mind because then they get offended. The big phonies. After a while of posting and reading in these forums you come to know more or less who speaks from their heart regardless of their views whether popular or not. And who sugarcoats everything they write trying desperately to be liked by saying what others what to hear even if in reality they themselves don't believe the very thing they write. Of these two types, you can't have any respect for the latter. But you do have to admire those who say what they really feel, regardless. Watch some get offended by this now, it never fails. |

I find that the more a person uses profanities in their posts, the less I'll take notice of what they have to say. I find myself skipping over their text. The more they use the more I find myself saying (amost subconcsiously, but not quite) not to bother with what they have to say, they are probably talking garbage (in more ways than one) and don't deserve to be listened to.
Now, that may be illogical, it may be incorrect to think like that and it may often give the wrong impression of the person... but that's how it is. *shrugs* To rephrase - you won't persuade me of your point of view in the forums by emphasising it with bad language. Thankyou. _____________________

I voted no, swearing doesn`t bother me when i`m reading it. However, in RL having to hear it, it can be really untasteful at times and something I don`t do. Other times, it can be extremely funny. There`s some vlog I watch and the person swears a ton, and i`m pretty convinced if he didn`t, it would not be funny at all. I think there`s a time and a place for it.. But online, I really couldn`t care less.
Concerning these forums; when I first began posting here, I rarely saw swear words and were told they were not allowed. But recently, it seems there is an awful lot of swearing, have the rules changed? _____________________
