I was reluctant to start this thread for fear that I will be disassembled and sold as spare parts at the Forum Cartel hangout.

I was just noticing that I have been seeing a lot more of the F-word in the SL forums. Is this acceptable? Are the forums still rated PG? Is the word "Gaybot" still offensive? I don't think I have ever reported a post or thread for vulgar language usage. While the F-word does kind of make me cringe, I don't want to report anyone, mute anyone, or tell someone, "hey watch your language!". Instead I will start a poll that asks, "Do you find curse words in the forums offensive/unacceptable?". When I think of PG, I am reminded of the American rating system for movies. Usually in PG movies they can get away with a few damns, lots of bitches, and maybe one dick or s***. I know lots of people will say, "Well I'm not from America! How dare you suggest that the PG system be based on American tv ratings or movie ratings!" Well, LL was based in America first, and for some reason I think that's what they had in mind.

On a side note, am I allowed to say the F-word in mature regions in world?

Thanks to our puritan-based, HR-inspired language-filtered proxy at work, I can no longer go to any URL with the word "secondlife" in it since they're all blocked from my reading a forum posting in here. Not that I read during work hours, but at lunchtime I have nothing better to do than to just read my email.

I do wish people would keep it clean, both here and elsewhere.

There's generally no need for it. Hold on, this is Resident Answers, isn't it?

Dislike vulgarity in any form and will not return to places in SL where it is used in excess. (Meaning not the occasional new patron who doesn't return, but where it is the accepted "norm".)

Personally I find no need for it, or to see it on screen. I suspect that some use it to add emphasis which, since BBcode is turned off, they cannot add by way of highlighting/emboldening. Others of course may simply be using words the way they speak... and I wish they wouldn't.

I've always found the concept of vulgar words to be an utterly bizarre cultural affectation. We'll use two different words to mean exactly the same thing and one is considered polite while the other is considered obscene. It makes absolutely no sense at all. So no, vulgarity doesn't bother me in the least.

Don't mind the occasional well placed profanity, but some people....well, ya know. Too much is too much.

Of course oddly enough-

No one ever calls someone a fornicating idiot. But they would call then a fucking idiot.

Like somehow the fact they are having some quality of sex thats best described by a four letter word makes them more of an idiot.

I find profanity Offensive no matter where it's used. English is comprised of a Huge number of extremely expressive words and Phrases, Why people feel they can't have any real impact in what they say without resorting to a Few Vulgerisms is beyond me. When someone launches into a Profanity laced Tirade my First instinct is "This person has nothing of value to contribute" After reading them through, i Find i am Usually quite correct in my First impression.

I'm going to be lazy and copy and paste a post I made in another thread with a revision or two:

To me "dirty words" are extremely important. Virtually every culture has words that are considered off limits. We need to have them around for emphasis. I believe as a society we need those off limit words for the exact moment when the time is right. For example, if I hit my thumb with a hammer I am likely to scream "OH F..K!!" That is most appropriate. If the "f" word becomes too common then I might as well be screaming "Oh Golly Jeepers" when I hit my thumb. That just doesn't have the same effect.

Personally offended, no, except I feel it shows a general lack of respect of others to use them so much.

Historically, cursing in moderation has been acceptable as well as showing of AV flesh (but no naughty bits). We are all adults after all.

Hey Strife, I found a script that cycles textures that are found in the contents folder of an object. It was posted by you in wiki. I was looking all over for one today to edit my robot avatar. I just wanted to say thanks. :)

personally offended by language? Nay

But I tend to refrain from the 'F' or 'C' words on forums or in front of my mother. As for other 'profane' or 'vulgar' words, I really dont give a shit one way or another. I do use the popular 'WTF'. Everybody knows what it means, but doesnt look that bad in print.
