Dont worry about it Buffy, if they didn't like bitching they just wouldn't bother opening the thread

I have participated in many requested surveys on this forum. The reason I'm so-called "bitching" regarding this particular one is that I am familiar with graduate-level research (which I doubt this is), research methodologies, and actually conducted research for a required project in a text-based world (IRC). Therefore I don't have patience with the OP expecting "research answers" when we are not even given the name of the particular school...for starters.

If OP googled certain things they would find out
1) American Apparel didn't do well and is closed
http://americanapparel.net/presscenter/secondlife/
2) Real life business, high end or whatever majority don't do well.
The average Resident resents them trying to come in and often
ignore their establishments.
3)
Clothing business in SL is very competitive those who do well already
have loyal following, it is very hard for new designers be they
well known or not in RL to compete with the ones that are already
establish and known.

• Are you male or female?
Female
• How old are you? 18-25 25-35 35-50 50+
50
• When did you join Second life?
February 2004
• How often do you come onto Second life, on a weekly basis? once a week, twice a week, 3 times a week plus.
Three times a week plus... everytime a week
• On average how much money do you spend monthly on Second life? Between $10-$15 $15-$25 $25-$35 $35-$45 $45-65 $65+
I don't import money any more... I only spend what I make. That said I would say I spend about L$1000 on average a month on clothes
• How much of that monthly average is spent on clothes?
see above
• Do you buy all your clothes from the “local” clothes shops?
I don't know what you mean by local in SL. Nothing is local. I tend to stick to the same designers pretty much. Pixeldolls, Jennyfur Peregrine, silentsparrow, Simone, mostly. Are they "local"? If you mean in-world rather than real life, then yeah, local.
• How much would you spend on a top from a “local” clothe shop?
about L$250
• Have you heard of American Apparel in Second life?
yes
• Have you ever bought clothes from American Apparel in Second Life?
nope. Thought they were boring.
• Have you been to the Nike store in Second life?
Nope
• Have you bought anything from Nike in Second life?
Nope
• Would you buy clothes from other premium brands in Second life?
If you mean premium=real life, then probably not. The things that people like in RL don't translate well into SL, they look insipid and boring. It's a bit like the difference between the sort of stuff you see on the catwalks and what turns up in the local Marks and Spencers. In SL, most people would go for the catwalk crazy fashion, the Philip Treacy hat made out of feathers and rust, rather than the hat you'd wear to a wedding. For that reason "real" shoes and fashion don't do well in SL.

The designers who have been here for a while know what people like and what they want. That's not to say that t-shirts and trousers don't sell in SL, but they'd have to be right, and very few RL designers get it right in SL. The best example of RL going wrong is probably Adidas. They made some shoes which looked very like the real thing, but they were over 200 tiny prims on each foot, and included some animations which didn't work well. I went to a lot of events where people were being made to take off their shoes at the door, which was a pain for them. Oh and they didn't dare let people adjust the sizing of them because that would have meant giving them mods on the shoes and they might have...modded them. So they came in three sizes, and for a lot of people they didn't fit into any of the sizes.
• How much would you spend on a top from a premium brand in Second life?
Nothing. If by "premium" you mean RL. For me, premium in SL would be an SL-based designer... RL designers would have to put a lot of time and effort into an SL production to be able to call themselves premium here. In fact, just that distinction and the way you made it makes me feel pretty grumpy about "premium" brands.

• Are you male or female?

Male

• How old are you? 18-25 25-35 35-50 50+

35-50

• When did you join Second life?

June 18, 2005

• How often do you come onto Second life, on a weekly basis? once a week, twice a week, 3 times a week plus.

Seven days a week.

• On average how much money do you spend monthly on Second life? Between $10-$15 $15-$25 $25-$35 $35-$45 $45-65 $65+

Not counting tier, less than US$10.00.

• How much of that monthly average is spent on clothes?

Too little to know.

• Do you buy all your clothes from the “local” clothes shops?

Second Life is a virtual world. I don't know what "local" means.

• How much would you spend on a top from a “local” clothe shop?

On a "top"? You mean like a shirt? If I liked the shirt, I might buy it. I don't know what the maximum price for a shirt I'd buy would be.

• Have you heard of American Apparel in Second life?

No.

• Have you ever bought clothes from American Apparel in Second Life?

No.

• Have you been to the Nike store in Second life?

Hugsy's answers are so close to mine, I have just copy and pasted his here with a couple of amendments, but all answers are true

• Are you male or female?

Male

• How old are you? 18-25 25-35 35-50 50+

50

• When did you join Second life?

February, 2007

• How often do you come onto Second life, on a weekly basis? once a week, twice a week, 3 times a week plus.

Seven days a week (I sometimes wonder if I ever leave)

• On average how much money do you spend monthly on Second life? Between $10-$15 $15-$25 $25-$35 $35-$45 $45-65 $65+

Less than US$2.50 on average since starting, but that's only accounting for Real Money put into SL, I do sometimes earn Lindens in world (but I guess that would come under the heading of 'spending someone elses money in SL'), so if that was taken into account it would be a little higher.

• How much of that monthly average is spent on clothes?

Initially I spent about 50% of it over the first year, now a few top designers give me clothes for free.

• Do you buy all your clothes from the “local” clothes shops?

Second Life is a virtual world. I don't know what "local" means.

• How much would you spend on a top from a “local” clothe shop?

On a "top"? You mean like a shirt? If I liked the shirt, I might buy it. Max L$250

• Have you heard of American Apparel in Second life?

Yes.

• Have you ever bought clothes from American Apparel in Second Life?

No.

• Have you been to the Nike store in Second life?

No.

• Have you bought anything from Nike in Second life?

No.

• Would you buy clothes from other premium brands in Second life?

Second Life "premium" brands are different from Real Life "premium" brands. Also what I consider a "premium' brand, others may not. I buy things I like.

• How much would you spend on a top from a premium brand in Second life?

L$250

This would really help me with my uni project if any of you would take the time to enlighten me on the secondlife world! I know you've probably been asked to do loads of these but if you can take the time id be grateful!
Questionnaire for Second Life

Actually, I am beginning to mind a bit - and I am well-known for taking the quizz- er, surveys people post here. But just for you...

• Are you male or female?

Female - though I think "yes" is a great answer...

• How old are you? 18-25 25-35 35-50 50+

35-50 range

• When did you join Second life?

March 2007

• How often do you come onto Second life, on a weekly basis? once a week, twice a week, 3 times a week plus.

3 times a week plus.

• On average how much money do you spend monthly on Second life? Between $10-$15 $15-$25 $25-$35 $35-$45 $45-65 $65+

Even including my account fees and tier rental, I don't know that I've broken the $10 barrier in a while. I'm about to buy some L$, though... say $10-15.

• How much of that monthly average is spent on clothes?

Not much. More when I was new, but SL clothes don't wear out, don't stop fitting... I have a very full inventory now, thanks!

• Do you buy all your clothes from the “local” clothes shops?

"Local" as in the mall next door, or as in "local to SL"? The style of the next-door mall doesn't suit me, but all the clothes I buy are from SL designers.

• How much would you spend on a top from a “local” clothe shop?

This question is phrased badly, and I'm not entirely sure what you mean. I might spend L$150 on a shirt I really liked, but I'm not exactly in the market for clothes!

• Have you heard of American Apparel in Second life?

I vaguely recall seeing them mentioned in passing in the forums, but I think that's it.

• Have you ever bought clothes from American Apparel in Second Life?

I don't think so.

• Have you been to the Nike store in Second life?

Oh, they have a store in Second Life? (That would be no.)

• Have you bought anything from Nike in Second life?

Not even.

• Would you buy clothes from other premium brands in Second life?

Premium as in...? The questions in this survey are really badly stated. I might buy from designers I consider high-end in SL with prices to match - such as Simone, or Blaze, or Innovations. If you're talking about manufacturers based in RL... not until they catch up with SL designers.

• How much would you spend on a top from a premium brand in Second life?

Assuming you mean RL brands, I most likely wouldn't pick it up if it were free. Who needs more junk cluttering up their inventory?

You know, I really think your survey, and the other threads you have started, miss the point of SL in a very big way. Seriously - I recommend that you read the SL fashion blogs, scope out what's offered here in the forums classified section, and do some poking around at XStreetSL and OnRez if you can't go in-world. There is a brand hierarchy already here, in clothes and in other merchandise, and no one is interested in replacing it or supplanting it with RL counterparts that don't even measure up to cheapo freebies that are already here.

Just ignore and let this one die... really

It's marketing here.. this so called student is NOT a student..
Read the questions carefully, and you discover a pattern.
Why does he/she asks about brands?
he/she's is only a few hours in the sl world, and don't get the grisps.. How would a complete noob know about these brands existance in SL?
What does he/she care, what we do with it or visited it?
ANSWER: HIDDEN MARKETING!
by mentioning these brands, twice, (2 questions per brand, without reasoning on why to ask at all), he/she is about printing the brandnames inside the heads of the readers.
GOAL: generate traffic, and sales
HOW?: simple by remembering the names, people might actually visit this location inworld, and perhaps buy there. (or worse in RL)

Same as in RL, with those annoying adverts in cinema's, banners on websites, adverts on tv.

after my Warcraft Guild went Pacific time only
(if you really want to know just look at the join date by our names)

Never. I keep a box of tissues on my desk.

50US$

• How much of that monthly average is spent on clothes?
about half.
If you mean clothes for me, then < 10%

• Do you buy all your clothes from the “local” clothes shops?
No. I also make my clothes.

• How much would you spend on a top from a “local” clothe shop?
On average for an exceptionally good top for a girl I like ... 500L$

No

It is entirely possible that I have but I do not think so.

• Have you been to the Nike store in Second life?
No

No

• Would you buy clothes from other premium brands in Second life?
Being a premium brand would neither encourage nor discurage me from buying the product if I thought it was worth the money.

• How much would you spend on a top from a premium brand in Second life?
same as I would from a "local" brand.

For what it's worth ...
Assume that space aliens are real and visit Earth regularly. How much does the Nike brand on shoes mean to them on their home planet.

Second Life is another world. A virtual world, true, but it is another world with different dynamics and rules than the Earth you normally live on. In here, Shiny Things is a premium brand shoe store while Nike is a lesser known gimmick place.

If I didn't have better things to do I'd write a letter to the heads of every department at every university advising them that any Second Life survey done by one of their students should be considered a twelve-minute effort with so little meaningful feedback (and so much fictional feedback) that any data submitted for a grade is likely to be made up.

No an I never will: they're gone from SL.

If you were actually a user of Second Life, you *might* have known that. I say might because they were never that big a deal inworld. This, of course, is the biggest flaw with your little research project. You don't understand the culture, and are so busy applying first life concepts to a place they don't necessariy apply in at this time.

First question should be "have you used Second Life for more than a month," or someting like it.

This would really help me with my uni project if any of you would take the time to enlighten me on the secondlife world! I know you've probably been asked to do loads of these but if you can take the time id be grateful!
Questionnaire for Second Life

• Are you male or female?

Female

• How old are you? 18-25 25-35 35-50 50+

35-50

• When did you join Second life?

May 14, 2008

• How often do you come onto Second life, on a weekly basis? once a week, twice a week, 3 times a week plus.

Six days a week at least once a day.

• On average how much money do you spend monthly on Second life? Between $10-$15 $15-$25 $25-$35 $35-$45 $45-65 $65+

Less than $10 (That includes a premium membership, plus some money to upload textures. I get a weekly allowance with my premium membership too....)

• How much of that monthly average is spent on clothes?

Not counting money to upload textures, I don't buy clothes. First, there are tons of freebies if I were so inclined. Second, I can make whatever I need to wear.

• Do you buy all your clothes from the “local” clothes shops?

No, I'm my own designer and clothes maker. It's more fun that way.

• How much would you spend on a top from a “local” clothe shop?

I wouldn't spend a dime. Shirts are about the easiest thing to make. I might spend 10L to upload the texture for a shirt or for bathingsuit straps or the top half of a dress though.

• Have you heard of American Apparel in Second life?

Nope....

• Have you ever bought clothes from American Apparel in Second Life?

Why should I pay money for any one else' clothes?

• Have you been to the Nike store in Second life?

No.... My avie likes sensible shoes and sandals. She needs ski boots for snow country, but sneakers just aren't on my list of necessities.

• Have you bought anything from Nike in Second life?

See above. I really don't need athletic gear. Nice pants, formal clothes, dance apparel, all variety of dresses are a lot more useful. People treat smaller avatarot better when they are more formally dressed.

• Would you buy clothes from other premium brands in Second life?

What kind of a snob do you think I am? I can make finer stuff than any mass market clothier or any designer with the exception of Indra Becker who is a tad too conservative for my tastes.

• How much would you spend on a top from a premium brand in Second life?

Nothing....I am my own premium brand.
