there are a few other relevant points in that though, like the clashes between pure RPer's and Social Gamers, and how disregarding social conventions leads to ostracization, even when some follows the game rules. it also highlights a flaw seen in lots of games... if you don't give players a convenient in game place to socialize, they will turn whatever common area is available into one, often to the detriment of both groups.... Tachyon had this exact problem back in the day... there was no simple ingame area to discuss things or have friendly duels, and the social rules of the are began to conflict between the groups. rules like, no hunting idle ships, and required requests for dueling, in what was suppossed to be a FFA environment.... In the case of City of Heroes, however, they had one. It's called the Pocket D, your one-stop-shop for socializing and even light-hearted PvP in the Arena booths that are there. Otherwise, CoH has regular zones with NO PvP or PvP zones. PvP is purely consensual and by going into a PvP zone you're agreeing to PvP. So, there was lots of stupid on both sides of the argument in the case of CoH. If you want to have a duel in CoH that doesn't cost anything on either side, take it to the arena. If you take your RP or duels to the PvP zones, expect to get attacked. Common sense, which seems to be on the endangered species list, says PvP zones equals to getting attacked by the opposing side and that it is going to happen. Courtesy is simply holding off attacking first... CoH was the worst game for the prof to pick to study. He'd have been better off with Lineage 2, where PvP is not optional outside of the cities. Or even WoW, where you have to flag for PvP on several servers. But the point this was drawn from still stands: You can be an educator and still be an jack@ss. _____________________

I like the concept of Slut Mag. Crap porn is ironic when it can be found anywhere in-world with little or no effort - same goes for the sleazy gossip. Mind you, they could do with optimising the pdfs properly in which case it wouldn't be such a hassle to download. This the same guy as Jumpy's old comrade-in-grief is it? If so, I don't see how he was out of line with the 'City of Heroes' thing when he was only seeking to play the game as it was planned - certainly not from the article you linked. I think the attitude of the other players was much more disturbing because it's pretty much typical of the roleplayer's tendency to stultify in-game once certain 'social' needs have been satisfied. For 'community' read 'chat room', for 'players' read 'sadsack bores' and for 'griefer' or 'troll' read 'not one of us'. I can't count the number of RP environments I've found in SL that have gone down that road. But in order to appeal to the 12 yo WoW crowd they shoehorned it in, ruining the game for many people. What the Prof was doing was greifing, pure and simple. Wow, that story's crazy. Generally speaking, when talking about a griefer that's been banned or has disappeared, you'd expect people to keep talking about what a jerk he was. But spreading RW rumors? Trying to find the guy's real address? That's kinda sick.

I never dealt it the player, myself, so I didn't know exactly what he was doing. If he was doing that, then yeah, he was an asshat. TPing 'em into the drones or other extremely powerful PvE stuff? No wonder people hated him! It's one thing to die to a fellow player, it's another to die to the environment! Literally! The former is no XP debt and the latter is! Now, I've seen dueling in the PvP zones... which if you're doing it just to spar, take it to the arena.. but don't complain if another person comes in for the attack. That IS a part of PvP and still doesn't cause XP debt. _____________________

I quit Coh abou the time they were just setting up Pocket-D, so couldn't remember/didn't know if there were areas where CoH/CoV people could conveniently get together and BS outside of the PvP zones (and I tend to agree about the craptacular behavior of using Uber Environmental treatments on people in PvP... the point is to fight each other, not to get whacked by the environment, shame on the game devs for enabling it)... don't get me wrong, I agree that the behavior was way over the top, and out of character even (self respecting hero goes around whacking "bad" guys that aren't actually doing anything"bad"... and by means of a proverbial drop into a volcano?!? wtf?) I just noted the facets that pertain to design and social interaction because too many online games ignore that (although I think that Guild Wars could really use a nice FFA zone, but their server layout really doesn't cater to it) _____________________

I confess, I didn't read the article (never played COH online although I seem to recall the desktop game was fun) but to me that is worse than the griefing. Griefing in game is one thing (up to the point it costs someone real stress or real money) but griefing someone's life is a whole other level-up, pardon the game parlance. _____________________

This is a good point Jumpy. This is your second expose, I believe. Have you ever thought of spinning off a non sexual rag for these stories? I think you'd have a hit if you did. i have Brenda but i run into certain problems. ive even come up with a name for it Chalice (tm) caws i like the sound of it but a non porn periodical poses a few probs. with slut magazine i get an endless stream of eager people wanting to be IN IT! I also have an eager, though not fully trained staff. if i could train up a few successors i def do intend to expand into a more kosher monthy fare as it were! i think the stories im gonna do are interesting enough that people can skim past a lil pixel porn _____________________
