I mentor at the newbie areas which get griefed a lot, so sadly I AR many times. Once I ARed a pretty bad attack on myself. The last AR I sent was about a script run on a bot ava, that reveals the location of an avatar. I would never AR anyone just because I suspect anything.

I'm quite isolated in RL so I'm never really sure how to deal with real people. I'm always afraid of being obtrusive by projecting my ideas of right and wrong on others. That's why I posed the "How do you" question and poll. I really WANT to know how to handle myself in some situations. This is a learning experience for me. Here's a suggestion, don't do this, It almost reminds me of my favorite Welcome area game... I'll find a noobie sitting down on a bench or wall and sit next to him... [alt] click over his head and stare... and stare... and stare... and maybe add a headspin just for fun. My avatar and style makes that 100x scarier too. (^_^)y You've mentioned before, on other threads, about certain difficulties you have in social situations. You've also mentioned that you enjoy hanging with grifers. SL might not be RL, but it helps trying to remember there are real people behind the avatars. Ever wondered why griefers are called griefers? Maybe you should ask yourself why you get such enjoyment out of making others feel uncomfortable. Usually, the last thing anyone with real social phobias wants to do is be an ass, or to stand out. Do you feel that as a griefer, you are the one with the power? Grief others before they grief you? The staring thing is actually quite funny, but do it to people who know you - not to strangers. You did say SL was a learning experience for you, so please take this as just a suggestion. Don't grief or annoy people you don't know anything about. They could also be experiencing 'social anxieties'. _____________________

Yeah, that's true. I guess I don't want to think I'm a griefer. It's just that the griefers I've met have been the nicest people to me in many ways. I haven't followed them on their games, but when they come back to the welcome area, I'm almost always around to hear their stories. Maybe I'm being treated like a mascot, but, it really feels like I have friends. I know other people that aren't griefers. They're fun too. Especially the builders. They can make some amazing stuff all the time.
I'm just wierd... I dunno... Most of my life revolves around interacting with an electronic box at work and at home. In SL I'm making myself be as social as possible, and somehow it's working. By hanging out in welcome areas and posting on the forums, I've expanded my social life way beyond anything that could have ever been possible before. I'm afraid that I'm able to be so functional because of the avatar I'm able to hide behind. I get a sense of safety with the idea that most people will never really get to know me. I just want to chat and play. In SL, I can handle that. Crud... I'm bringing on drama again... Please forgive me everyone! _____________________

I just want to chat and play. In SL, I can handle that. Crud... I'm bringing on drama again... Please forgive me everyone! What you call "games" is hurtful to other people. It's like idolizing a street gang because they treat you like their little sister, even though they go out and rob people and kill others. Obviously these guys aren't RL murderers, but in SL, they are thugs, bullies and truly worthless people. They might treat you ok because they see you as a "little sister", but are they really your friends if they are that kind of people? You enjoy hanging out with the builders and others who are providing content or otherwise contributing to the grid - the people you meet who aren't griefers or idiots contribute - they make SL a rich and varied tapestry. They bring color to our lives, both in SL, and, by giving us perspective and challenging our views and biases, also our RL's. Why not hang out with them instead of with people who breed hatred and chaos? Look - I don't know you from Eve. Or Eve's little sister. Whatever. Ignore me if you want. God knows my advice is often pretty suspect. All I'm saying is that you are judged in some part by the people with whom you surroud yourself, and the effect that they have on your perspective cannot be a good one. My Grandpa used to say, "Fly with the crows, get shot with the crows." Grandpa drank. I never knew why he shot crows, either. Anyway I'm just throwing in my .02. You're a RL adult, I assume, so I don;t need to talk to you like you're a kid. You can make your own decisions. I just think the people you are looking up to are poison. _____________________

I speak softly and carry a big stick..never carry weapons..even invisible ones...no shields either.
I generally don't even use the AR feature. Last time a guy griefed me..was a next door neighbor guy who fancied himself as a weapons conossieur. He was miffed because i had rented his land out from under him after he let his rent lapse. I was in an intimate moment with a friend..behind closed doors..and this guy from all the way over in his parcel sat on one of the balls turning an intimate twoseome into a rude abrupt 3some. He laughed calling me **explitive** and then jumped up saying there..thats was for stealing my land. I let him go back to his land to laugh with his friends Then I "owned" him . hit him so hard it crashed his PC...when he finally logged back on..he sat on a box for the rest of the night..so did I.Needless to say...when he sold his parcel he asked if I wanted to buy He never asked if it was me..or mentioned it to me..cause he knew he deserved it. I could've ARd' him...what would that have gotten me?.prolly nothing...I dealt with it..it didn't escalate..nuff said. If it were to have escalated..then maybe I wouldve AR'd..tit for tat bores me. It's always good for griefers to remeber that guns and weapons and push scripts and sheilds and being a PC nerd aren't "excslusive" to them ~Lana _____________________

To know me is to love me. I'm actually that nice. Just profoundly misunderstood. /sobs /me gives the misunderstood sad man a big slurpy doggie kiss. Those always make everything better. /me also dodges the boot to the butt if the sad man doesn't like doggy kisses. _____________________

I have no problem filing ARs. I've read the TOS so I know what is against it. But here's the other key ... it has to be active.
Little things like the existence of mature poseballs in my PG home sim aren't doing anything, therefore not active. Also not active are accidental flashes of nudity while changing clothes in public in a PG sim. The chat-spamming gambling chance ball (pay 5L$ and you may win 10L$) on the next parcel over got ARed because it was actively seeking participation in a game of chance. I've ARed two greifers who have attacked friends of mine (one crashed a sim, the other hit with everything I've ever seen possible). I've also ARed the **expletive** pink megaprim ball the two times it has covered my land. Oh, and I've ARed every time a greifer has pushed me with laughing Batman prims or whatever else. The way I figure it, with so many people, "Just letting things slide," someone's gotta help LL on their search-and-destroy mission. At the same time, I don't AR things that aren't against TOS just because I may not like them. That would flood LL with useless ARs and make the AR system a joke. Those I just deal with (hasn't happened yet). |

If someones AR'd enough that they eventually lose their account then they just create another one. Assuming they don't have an alt already. Really makes the system kinda pointless for anything except an extreme violation. Until they require payment info for everyone, or some other way of control then they are really waisting a lot of theirs and other peoples time. _____________________

I dont really AR most things. I think I've AR'd maybe 3 times in 2 years. Usually for people intent on destroying events, etc.
But thats only IF I don't find it somehow amusing. ![]() I really don't care what others do so long as its not going to interferre with me. And even then it has to be in an enormous capacity, like lagging me till I'm at 1 FPS. I consider myself quite tolerant of others "online shenanigans" and am not partial to those who impose their morals & beliefs on others. I dont care if you do any "forbidden" stuff in SL. Just dont push it on me & we'll be fine. Ok, one more Peeve: Armchair Quarterbacks of SL. It's LL's call on what to add or not. Its their company, their product. Don't like it? Tough! Welcome to Corporate America! Love it or Leave it or Go try TSO. When SL becomes crap, then I would leave with no problem. So far, 2 (almost 3) years & I'm still here. Others since the begining. Seems to me something must be going right. _____________________

I don't generally AR anything as it is not effective in producing any visible consequences either in the short of long term.
A defensive strategy making use of mute and land bans if in an area they can be set is often more appropriate. |

Ok. As much as I think it's pitiful that someone likes to bully newbies, I have to admit that would probably make me laugh. I'd still think they were pathetic individuals, of course, but it'd be funny to watch. It is a bewildering and upsetting experience. Here you have a bunch of complete new folks, who haven't even learned how to move. Some of them are still rezzing in. They can't defend themselves at all, and someone is shoving them into the ocean. So this avatar is suddenly where he can't see anything, just a cliff and a sea floor, and doesn't know how to get out of there. It's like stealing someone's crutches. _____________________

Yeah, when was only a few months old and was still hanging around the infohubs, one day we had a Griefer for about 3 hours. Wearing a hideously deformed avatar he would push newbies as they rezzed onto the tram tracks or or pin them into corners till they logged out. Many were brand new to SL and this was their first "welcome" to SL and I suspect many's one and only experience. We filled multiple Abuse Reports, tried to contact Lindens, but in the end all we could do was offer new people a TP elsewhere and gang up to push this clown away from them, but he just kept coming back. _____________________
