How do you, really you, AR?

Learn something new everyday. I never heard of lolicon - looked it up. But, when I did it made sense to me, as I'm a fan of "Lolita", one of my favorite books, but certainly I'm not a fan of that type of fetish. Having said that, I think why my friend showed me the material, is he knows "Lolita" is one of my favorite books, and probably felt comfortable because of that, thinking I would not be shocked by the photos he showed me (these were of young boys, not girls). Well, literature is much different than pornography. Nobokov, was not really into 12 year old girls, he was creating a character and regardless of the subject, the book is a masterpiece of prose and haunting in it's depth of dispair and by no means makes it seem glamourous to be a pedophile.

Anyway, sorry to hear you've had to deal with this too. Not an easy position to be in, as I know.

I only AR when it's directly affecting me. And then I hire a hitman.

I just AR stuff that breaks TOS/CS but even that sorta breaks down into two sets of things. One where people are trying to be bad and one where they're just stupid (or careless or something else non-malicious).

In the later case, usually some scripted object that's worked its way into my home sim then gotten stuck there, I always try to mention in the AR that I'm just hoping for the object to be cleaned up and not really complaining about the person who created it..

As these people get to know me, they understand that I'm tolerant of it all, it's just not my own direct interest. I respond to their offers civilly and they tend to stop immediately. That's why I didn't AR and probably won't unless someone refuses to stop. (^_^)y

Report a purveyor of RL child pornography, who is (regardless of how far down the chain they are), creating a demand for the gross exploitation, torture and abuse of children..

Keep quiet, in support of a "friendship" formed in SL with someone you know nothing of..

I chose "REPORT" I ignored MY friendship and followed what I knew was the right thing to do.

I haven't had many opportunities to AR anyone. I just teleport away from griefers or ban them from my land. I haven't met that many. I would AR really bad ad farmers spoiling my land. I did AR someone who told me she was a rl child. I was worried about her safety. And If I ever became aware of anyone with Child Pornography I would not only AR them but report it to law enforcement.

Can I just clear something up?

You're "tolerant" of the abuse of children and their use in the child pornography..?

Ok, I think I'm getting lost in some twilight zone here.. or do people really become so embedded in the fantasy world of SL that they can't appreciate the RL implications of an RL image ....just because they receive it in SL?

Stephen, Kaimi, and Elora, You've all made valid points and you're all on the same page. I think the Lindens have promised that local authorities will be contacted as a reaction to SAP and CP ARs somewhere in the blog.

Somehow, I wonder why people think things are 'hidden' in SL considering the asset servers are centralized. (^_^) I guess it takes a brain. (^_^)y

omg what a creep. i'm very tolerant of what goes on but that is just sick. i think i would have called the cops.

personally, i could care less about all the other stuff such as sleazy clothes, etc. because a lot of the outfits i've seen are way more tasteful than what people wear in RL sometimes. then again, i wear naughty things all the time because, well, it's not RL.

now, i'm a soon-to-be nightclub owner and i have a lot of 18+ things on my site and blog. i wish there was a better way to block out the potential kids instead of just a check box that says mature.

I'm sorry, Immie, I'm with Stephen on this. I thought that you, like many of those playing child AVs, are on some quest to rediscover some lost or missed childhood, and that you are not in any way, directly or indirectly, into CP.

I would waste about zero moments between being handed or shown child porn and the AR button, no matter what its source.

The OP asked what would make us AR.. what it would take.

It seems that while having your avatar orbited a few times in a sandbox is beyond the pale, receiving (what I hope) is an unsolicited RL image of RL Child Pornography is a judgement call.

Either way, maybe you're right, live and let live...if we don't talk about it, it's not really happening..

Nowhere did I express any opinion about it. All I asked was that this thread not turn into a discussion about it. We've had _hundreds_ of those threads here - these forums around this time last year were horrible with every other thread turning into a discussion about it.

But Meade, Someone has posted here who seems to be saying that she has been shown child pornography by someone in SL and chose to let them continue without doing anything to try and save the children involved.

No decent person can ignore that.

edit: and consider that it might have been posted simply because they know that most people will find it upsetting, not because it actually happened. Drama queens, both like the one you're talking about and like Stephen, exist a-plenty around here.

Very good points; I thought of both immediately. And there aren't that many issues where I feel that once they have been brought up I must make my own position clear but this is one of them.

I AR for being caged, being orbited and for group invite spam.

I made an alt to hang out at the LL OI so I can chat with newbies and answer questions. I have seen griefers there on several occaisions. They were annoying the newbies, but not me. I was unsure what to do and decided to do nothing. Not my place to "protect" a newbie if they don't need my help. Not my job to police OI, and I am not an official mentor. Still it bums me out to see newbies griefed at OI. It happened to me when I was new and it bothered me.

Crud.... Sorry everyone..... I did say "I don't keep" but maybe a better phrase would be "reject"... I don't know... I'm still a noobie in terms. But I do reject almost everything sent to me since I got introduced to griefers on my first few days in Hanja. I guess anything I say will come across as backpedaling now.

I'm quite isolated in RL so I'm never really sure how to deal with real people. I'm always afraid of being obtrusive by projecting my ideas of right and wrong on others. That's why I posed the "How do you" question and poll. I really WANT to know how to handle myself in some situations. This is a learning experience for me.

I'm not moral or nice by any description. I could say more, but, I agree, that would be drama-queenish of me. What I am is someone with a deviant personality, open to letting people live their lives no matter how angelic or criminal. It's just me. I'm weak that way.

None of the above apply to me. I don't AR, I have never (thus far) had any reason to. I haven't even really thought about what qualifies and what doesn't for ARing, but I'm pretty sure if someone was harrassing me or someone else, I would probably step in like I would in RL. I hate seeing people picked on or harassed. I wouldn't set out on an AR hunt though, I have too much fun elsewhere.

If you have seen child pornography you must report it to the authorities. And I mean the FBI. Giving them your information could even be the only hope of being saved that the helpless victims have.

/me really wanted to walk away from this sub-thread but...

I really think it would be better to report something like that to the Lindens. They are much better set up to collect a set of ARs and gather IP addresses and asset transfers and who's-been-where and all that stuff and send the bundle to the RL authorities, when it's appropriate.

It's popular around here to say that ARs never go anywhere and the Lindens don't care and etc, etc. They do take this particular set of stuff pretty seriously though.
