From: Kay Penberg Oryx Tempel's question was a good one. Have you tried this addition to ZHAO you mention? Can anything else be added this way, or is it restricted to a particular set of animations? ZHAO is an open-source script: you can add pretty much anything you want to it, and not just animation overriders. I think there are many versions around now - I've seen animation merchant specific versions using a multi-prim button HUD for the interface, versions that handle the typing override and swimming animations for when you're in the water, and versions with none of these things. Essentially ZHAO is just a script and a couple of prims. Animation merchants add their own animation set, configure the notecard and sell it on. Making the animations is tricky - configuring ZHAO to use them is simple.

I love the typing animation. It's very cool. I'd rather be seen typing that picking my nose.

I don't mind the animation. I hate the clicky clackity sounds that come with it. I've replaced those with a single click.
In debug settings I set 'UISndTyping' to "091402dc-f0ea-81d4-6ca0-728649a1c0c5" (button click down) and 'UISndStartIM' to '6005e358-33fd-d08b-012f-6110ab27a413" (button click up.)

In a world with so few "physical" clues I find the typing to be useful.

I don't care for the typing animation, but ...
I use a very simple way to ...
let others know I am not done talking,
and also to avoid them having to deal with a ...
suddenly-appearing huge paragraph of text to read. Furthermore,
I find it quite easy to let them know when ...
I am finished.
(Of course this requires reasonable mastery of and willingness to use decent grammar and punctuation practices, which is clearly too much to expect these days.)

From: Osprey Therian In a world with so few "physical" clues I find the typing to be useful. That's the thing, isn't it? In RL, even if I'm hesitating or thinking about how to respond, people can tell at least something is going on. But in SL, it is often far from clear. I've turned mine back on. If people I meet think that's naff, I can live with it.

From: Drivin Sideways I don't care for the typing animation, but ... Hmm ... that's not a bad way of handling it ... although I can see situations where it might ... just might ... be ambiguous. A neat method though ... From: someone (Of course this requires reasonable mastery of and willingness to use decent grammar and punctuation practices, which is clearly too much to expect these days.) That is one of the areas which embarrasses me a little. In situations such as posting here, I can take the time to edit what I write. I can try to get the grammar and punctuation correct; and the built-in spell checker is a great help too. But because I am such a poor typist, especially in chat-type situations (something I had not done until a few weeks ago), I have to throw all those out the window to some degree if I am to send chat in a reasonable time. So, as a for instance, I tend to not bother with capitalisation (unless I know I have the time). The important thing is to communicate, but I admit I to not being comfortable with the compromises I have to make in order to keep up with people chatting.

To be honest, I've never really thought about switching it off. As so many people have said, it's an extremely useful device. And the animation is quite cute, I think. Even that daft little nod at the end! But this whole 'have to change default stuff so you don't look like a noob' thing flies over my head. I still think that the default stand anims aren't bad at all - and actually a lot more natural looking that many of the AOs I see people use. I mean, some of them really are very silly. I've always liked the breathing: way the AV's chest gently rises and falls in the defaults. It's quite subtle and nicely done. But I guess subtlety doesn't really count for much! Ah but the walk, yes. That has to be changed.

I'm the same Kay. I think a lot of people are. But everyone I've ever known in SL accepts that those compromises have to be made and that your priority has to be to get what you want to say across quickly. You also become fluent in typonese in no time! I do draw the line at u for you and so on though. Though I have noticed that people have become ppl lately. Have to keep an eye on that.

I feel a bit less bad about it now. Also, I agree with you about the "Stand" animations. I spent a lot of my first two weeks trying to sort out the AO stuff; spent a lot of money on it too. But in the end, I went back to the default stands. Apart from anything else, the breathing you mention is so cute. I love it.

From: Naz Fride I have mine off, and it stays off. BTW, MystiTool's radar puts a "T" next to the name of a typing avatar. But when typing animations are switched off, it doesn't show.

From: Kay Penberg What are its walk animations like? Any without the usual big hip-swing that seems part of a lot of female walks in SL? It has several different walks, and the prize is not bad either. Just 300L . My AV changes random between the walks. It's a bit quirky (is that a word) sometimes the dance anim kick in when I'm stuck, so I take a "ballerina jump". I kind of like it, so I don't customize it. https://www.xstreetsl.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=1317938

Yes, "quirky" really is a word A nice one too. It's possible to tinker endlessly with AOs, but I'm with you - once you find something that works and you like, stick with it.

From: Treasure Ballinger I think the 'nod-nod' is cute. It looks like I am absolutely positive about what I just typed, 'yes-yes!' "No I do NOT want teh secks" *nod nod* ... Mixed messages? From: Kay Penberg But in the end, I went back to the default stands. Apart from anything else, the breathing you mention is so cute. I love it. This made me wonder .... any way to intersperse the default stands into a ZHAO stand rotation?

Yes, just leave one of the steps blank. so... :: [ Standing 1 ] :: name of anim :: [ Standing 2 ] :: :: [ Standing 3 ] :: name of anim :: [ Standing 4 ] :: name of anim would leave the second step of the rotation to revert to default.

I use the "short bursts" technique too. Instead of typing a whole paragraph I usually send one sentence (or less) at a time. In chat that is. In IMs, all bets are off. LOL

From: Dawnee Swansong This made me wonder .... any way to intersperse the default stands into a ZHAO stand rotation? I'm pretty sure I got away with this by using the name of the default stand, "stand", as one of the anims in the configuration of my ZHAO, but I may have gotten this mixed up with stuff I tried out on the AO I wrote myself (heavily based on an example I found in the LSL wiki).

From: Brenda Connolly Call me an almost 3 year old noob then. Me too; can't stand the typing anim and don't use it. It is probably working for me cause I'm usually with folks I have known for years or using voice. I had to stop using the typing anim cause I kept expecting people in RL to start typing when they talked...too weird.
