There's lies, there's damn lies, and there's SL profiles

Ive only been playing SL for a few weeks, but I have been playing on-line games for almost a decade now, and I can tell you a few horror stories about letting to much "accurate" information out.

Harrasing E-mails, Phone calls. I even know one girl in Everquest who had to phone the police when some dork showed up at her door professing love for her hot Dark Elf body... her husband smacked him around a bit and held him till the cops showed up. but with all the kooks on line it could have been much worse.

For reasons like that I never put RL personal information out in any game I play.

OK, I think I jumped in a bit quick with my earlier comment. I keep forgetting that RL tab ;)
In fact, I've seen it blank on so many avatars I simply don't bother looking these days. Nothing there would make much difference to me anyway.
I put it all on the first tab, southern UK, in SL to enjoy meeting people. All my avatars say that. It's all I think anyone needs to know. Anything more can, and has, come out with conversation. If I put it all down in the profile probably nobody would talk to me.
So .. no lies.

My profile is designed to make people ask questions...

Many of these things I actually do some are bogus...

Depends. How much money do you have?

My RL tab is blank. I don't mind sharing some of my RL with people, but honestly, I'm pretty boring. I'm not a millionaire playboy, recording artist, professional athlete, etc... I'm just a guy. I go to work, come home, goof off on SL, play a little poker and go fishing on the weekends. Who cares? I couldn't think of anything to put in my RL tab, although adding my time zone isn't a bad idea, I guess. My main tab just has a quote I really like. Heck, I don't even have a picture up! I really need to get on that. Maybe tonight.

Everything in my profile is true - both the SL and RL tabs. Granted, there isn't a whole lot written on the First Life tab - just a few basics. A lot of people in SL know a bit more than is written there and my really close friends know a whole lot more. I don't lie to anyone about 'me', it is just a matter of how much I tell them.

Morning all,

Here is my take on the real life tab. Mine is blank. Not hiding anything just dont bother to put any thing in it. I figure it this way you want to know more about me well you can ask me and I might tell you, depending on how well I know you.

The 2nd Life tab is what I look at anyways when I check others profiles to see if they belong to any of the groups I do and to read their about. I have read quite a few interesting things :)

I recently had to change (delete a sentence) in my SL tab, because it was 'no longer' true.
(Claire knows what sentence I am talking about) so I would have to say, my SL & RL tabs are accurate and up to date; but while we are at it, if you want to see more of what is REALLY going on in my life (the part where SL & RL are mingling) you would have to look in between tabs, at my picks...I love the fact that we can put our own photos in there. And there is a picture in there that would make Claire blush...again!

I am a bit confused

Is the purpose of this thread to claim women lie more than men in Second Life?

Or just lie on their profiles?

Most people seem to leave much of their 1st Life tab blank or just general information. You cant type all that much information into the tab anyway, so I don't see it.

Certainly I have never found 90% of the information in ANYONE's profiles to be lies .. So I think thats maybe an exaggeration.

Oh...Sheepbot was before your time, I'm sorry. Long story. You can probably search for the threads on it.

You are so right Colette, the OP does look rather sexist. But we are trying to derail this posting and make it the Friday thread instead

I think I may go back and put something outrageous in my profile just for the Halibut...

I'm broke again. Prop bets, booze and escorts. At any rate, there's a difference between "can't figure out how" and "too lazy".

Oh don't we all know it, should we vote on which one is you? How about I just give you a slap on the rump to get you started. The charge for that one only being L$500,000, what a deal.

That is one expensive slap on the rump... I hear Love might do it for free but you would have to be naked and chained to a rock somewhere.

Ok just to stay on topic... My 1st life tab reads:

"I serve in the MIA as a super secret agent. I've been assigned to SL to track down an elusive international criminal leading a small terrorist group bent on virtual terror. If you have seen a man with a fish name (sometimes confused for a woman) please let me know. The future of the world could depend on it.

While I wait for tips I like to cavort with beautiful women in tropical islands drinking shaken and not stirred martinis."

The only lie is the martinis bit.. I hate them

No, I don't have a furry avatar... should I get one? - But then I worry that people will call me tiny.

My profile is 100% true but there's very little on it. I've said time and time again that I just don't bother with peoples first lives. I accept them whoever they are in SL and if they choose to have a different persona that they put out for their 1st life then that's their prerogative.

I could have put in my profile that I am a 90 year old Bulgarian widow. If that's the persona I want you to believe then so be it. It's none of your business otherwise. SL gives people the opportunity to be who they want to be and I don't think that has to be limited to just their SL but their FL as well.

With time, as I get to know my SL friends and we get to know more about each others RL along the way. Until that time they can say whatever they want IMO. I don't see SL as a dating service though. Personally, I think it's a pretty lousy way to meet someone. I know it's worked for some and that's wonderful, but I think there are better places for it. I guess if that's what you want, though, then your perspective on FL profiles would be totally different than mine.
