Hi guys,
Fortunately over the couple of years I have been in Sl I have made a number of RL friends too, through it.
So of course I know their RL situation, their RL likes and dislikes, etc.
Yesterday we had some fun going over our SL profiles for our mains and alts, and good god, the bullshit that was in there! I fared the best with about 90% of mine being true, but it seemed that the most outrageous bullshit was the stuff in the girls' profiles. Is this to be expected? Is it endemic?

Is it to be expected that people will be less than truthful in a place where they cannot be put to proof, and where they are given the opportunity to present themselves in any way they wish? Of course it is.
I don't think there is anything untrue in my profile about RL, but frankly I never assume that anyone is telling the truth in their profile, and I see no reason why they should give any information about RL and if they choose to, I don't see anything wrong in making it all up.
If people are silly enough to believe a profile is the gospel truth, that's up to them.

In my profile is only remark that I like to make pictures and that if someone is interested they should contact me.
But.... I have seen enough male profiles as well that were just ridiculous and made me laugh aloud.
Endemic? Maybe... but certainly not gender related.
Morwen.

It never really occurs to me that the profile details may not be true. But then, it doesn't really bother me and it doesn't surprise me that some people don't tell the truth in them. Maybe it is some sort of RP type thing? I dunno, but I usually read the profiles of the people i meet, and i usually just take it at face value

When I read a profile I take the SL page at face value. I don't read 1st life pages. And I agree, creative writing is not gender specific as far as I've seen.

what Wulfric says I take profiles as an indication of likes and dislikes, not research material for a biography. A starting point for a conversation ... or a total put off!!!

My RL tab is blank. Random strangers don't need to know I am 19,size 2,live in a mansion with several servants and own a yacht.

I suppose it all depends on how you use profile info to judge a person. If someone's profile told me they were a RL millionaire, supermodel or great writer, my reaction would a resounding 'meh'. Not so much because I wouldn't believe them, but because it makes little difference to what they do in SL.
I don't see any point in creating a profile full of lies... I hope my profile attracts people with similar interests. If it was fake, I'd end up with fake friends. There are a few 'lies of omission', mainly because there are things you don't reveal to every passing stranger.

From: Brenda Connolly As to whether or not you get Lucky after a show....I'd rather not speculate. -------- My RL tab has basic info - just stuff like what country I am in... It helps people know when I am likely to be online or whatever. I'm not about to share all of my wierd little details though. Only people who know me better get any further than that. Profiles make little impact on me. i read them, but I take them with a pinch of salt. It also helps to kick off a talking point. And, well, some people's profiles are just hilarious. i little bit of humour in a profile that makes me giggle is almost certainly going to make me say something. Some people are masters at making me laugh... ...seems most of them are part of the forum too lol.

Have noticed by chance the amount of 'ugly' avatars there are in SL? That's indicative of the very nature of the Internet supported platforms people use to exist in this 'twilight zone'.
None of us have our passport picture taken at 4am in the morning, having just been awaken after a night on the town, using a brownie.
Bullshit is perhaps a strong word to use. Pinch of Salt is always more acceptable, it is just that some peoples definition of a pinch, is perhaps larger than others. I am no longer surprised to find out that a 'female' in SL is actualy a guy and vice versa.
Voice had the potential to expose such people, but in reality, unless you are contemplating, or have had, 'sex' does it really matter? I do know of a couple of great female clothes designers that are female ingame, but guys in RL. They are potrayed as female as it is perhaps 'more acceptable' for females to create great clothes for females.
In RL, this is not true, but this is an alternative world. What you may encounter in VR platforms, is the personas of people.

I personally do not understand all the secrecy about a few real life details in the 1st Life tab. It is not going to hurt and it is there to share something about yourself you do not mind being public. I put real information there about me. Nothing that can hurt me, but it is me. The majority of people treat that tab as if it will expose their secrets on a national scale.

I don't think it's a matter of keeping my real life a secret. My real life is pretty basic and really doesn't have anything to do with my second life. I just don't see the point of telling random people I am a married SAHM who cleans, wipes noses and grocery shops most of the time. Kind of loses the whole appeal of SL to me,lol.

Mine's 100%. I am female, I do live in the UK, and I do get on best with artists and musicians. My picks are 100% and I don't make any extravagent claims anyway.
Ook.

The thing is, people who really ARE millionaires, or famous, etc. almost never brag about it. If you see that sort of thing in an SL profile, it's probably bogus.
On the other hand, there are a few people out there who go ahead and say it. They know they'll never be believed, and it's a source of amusement to them.

I don't get the lying thing....but that''s not my style so I wouldn't get it. *shrug* I think perhaps a lot of folks are in SL for a total RP experience...anotherwords they had no intention of going in as themselves....they are simply playing with a character they developed.....using that character to experiment and explore. Sadly....a lot of the more genuine and open folks get burned by the ones who are in SL for all that pretend drama and BS. Maybe celebrities run around in here incognito......probably wouldn't be a bad idea for someone in the lime light to put on an SL cloak and go hang with the 'normal' folks. LOL Not that I've found anything normal about SL. But...I'm just me in SL.....my avatar tends to change with my mood...but it's all an artistic thing for me...I just enjoy creating new looks....but I'm female, she's female...no gender play here.... can't even fathom it. LOL

In my RL tab, I just post a few things. More demographics than anything. I don't usually share my Rl with anyone until I get to know them, and then watch out its always TMI!
I don't like braggers either and to think of it, I have never met any.
