Can A Thread Just Disappear??

Hallo,

I wanted to check a thread that I was reading yesterday (one regarding age-verification), and cannot seem to find it at all today! I think it appeared yesterday rather than the day before, but I have checked back to page 9 and cannot find it all.

Why would this happen? Can it be totally deleted from the forums by the OP or anyone else? Do LL remove them without notice and not put them anywhere else?

It just seems a little odd that it has gone. Anyone know why this would happen please?

Have you checked whether it was moved into a different part of the forum? That sometimes happens.

It was moved to Current Version Feedback:

/142/a0/207632/1.html

It's a good idea to subscribe to threads that you are following. That way you can see which ones have new posts using your User CP, and you will still see it there even if it's moved to a different forum. :)

I've had this happen. I've used the search function to look for threads, using words that I know for a fact to be in the title of the thread and the posts. Some times this even happens with threads that I know for a fact were on the front page only a few hours earlier. Either the threads do get deleted from time to time even when still open, or the search function needs looking at.

Just noting that searching for title words works much better if you go into advanced search and limit the search to just the title. Using the default search looks at the entire thread, and inevitably brings up a ton of completely irrelevant junk.

Another way to look for the thread is to check the forum profile of someone you know was posting in it (even yourself if you posted). From there you can click "Find all posts by...", which will lead you back to that thread. :)

True, but in my case I knew the thread I was looking for was more recent than the most recent one the search brought up, so something was defintitely fishy.

Also, search on these forums frequently works about as well as it does in-world. You know it's there somewhere, but that doesn't mean you'll be able to get to it.

Also, if there is punctuation after or before the word you are searching for, forum search will not find it. i.e. if you search for this odd little thread using the word "casino" and searching titles only, it will not find it. But if you search for "casino?" it will. Similarly, if you just search for all threads started by "holdmy wood" it finds it.

I think we should just tell Honeysuckle she didn't get enough votes from the Forum Ingrates Convention to be allowed to read the thread more than once...

Another odd thing that I've discovered is that the forum software will allow the OP to delete a thread even if it's massively long as long as it isn't locked so a thread could have 10 pages worth of responses and the OP on a whim could just delete it.

That seems grossly unfair. When an OP posts an embarrassing and ill-advised thread, it should be kept, like an insect in amber, for future forumites to marvel at and dissect.

And yet we can't get URL links or PHP codes or any of that other bb code stuff to work.

Amazing.

I dispute this. I've seen that you can delete an individual post that is NOT the OP, and I've seen that you can edit the title of the thread, but I do NOT see that the OP can delete either the original post nor the thread as a whole.

I've seen OP's who accidentally double-posted edit the title of one to "Strife, please lock this", which wouldn't be necessary if they could delete it themselves.

And I've seen PLENTY of threads where the OP got a bad response and desperately wanted the thread to go away, but couldn't do it.

I also just went to check the thread I started last night. I can delete any post I made in the thread EXCEPT the original.

So unless there is some secret hidden delete button that I don't see, this is NOT possible under the current settings (at least in RA, but other forums may be different).

You've totally made me pronounce Ava in a different way because of your signature! Ava used to rhyme with raver!

I put it in there for just that reason... I'm guessing you get your name mispronounced quite a bit too! :D

interesting. ava can rhyme with raver when spoken by a pommie or an aussie, but not when spoken by an american (due to the american hard 'r')

So do I at times.

Actually I'm glad. Except in extreme cases, I hate seeing posts and threads deleted. They are of historical (and hysterical) value. I think locking at the appropriate time is enough.

Oh dear! I feel silly now!

Hallo All,

Many thanks for answering my query. Rayner, I didn't check the other parts of the forum, I didnt realise that threads would be moved about, so thanks for that suggestion.

My thanks to Ava, I have found it now! Also thanks for the advice regarding subscribing to threads, again another thing I didnt know.

My thanks to you all for your interesting answers, but it does look like although I found the thread I thought might have been deleted, some still go astray!

And Incanus, I really wont get any votes now for the Forum Ingrates Convention because of my silliness in not searching properly - how am I going to cope reading the threads only once? Lol!

Folks starting threads could reduce the amount of thread moving by reading the forum descriptions and any applicable stickies describing the purpose of the various forums and making a best effort to start their threads in the correct forum to begin with.
