My husband suddenly decided out of the blue yesterday to create an Avi. Not sure why, since he's been resistant since I came inworld. But, he did. Now the thing is, I can see that he may also be resistant to making his Avi look better than being a Newb. Yesterday, I had to beg him to let me get him a Mystitool, after trying to explain to him the basics of how people feel about wandering upon their land and such. That in itself, was an effort! Most likely he isn't going to be world much, if at all. But, if he does, it would be nice to set him up with the basics and I know next to nothing about setting up a male personna. FREE is the key. He absolutely is opposed at this point to paying for anything /me *sighs* He would need a decent skin and hair. Hair has to be "normal" NOT trendy. He isn't much into role play. Preferably, short, dark and curly - with a goatee. Clothing I probably can find on my own. I know all the places to go for that as far as freebies are concerned. I know skins/hairs are in those boxes too; however, maybe someone knows somewhere particularly good to send me so I'm not on some wild goose chase. Oh, and if I show up at the Hangout with him? Please don't tease him about how he looks, ok? He might be looking like a newbie for a long, long time to come! He's sweet as pie, but rather stubborn at times

Nobody teases newbies who show up at the hangout. He might get the new resident info folder pushed on him several times, but people are pretty friendly.
There are a couple decent freebie male skins at gamersbrand. I don't think I have a LM, but I'll look. Plug gamersbrand into search/places and you'll probably get it. It's HUGE, lagged out, blingy and awful, but they have a decent selection. He can pick up some freebie clothes while he's there, and maybe some hair, although I don't think there is any decent freebie male hair anywhere. He might have to bite the bullet and buy some. I think they have a selection of free eyes there that was ok.
If he doesn't want to work on his shape himself, there are free shapes all over the place.
Good luck! Male avatars are a little harder to set up for free because there isn't much selection. If you can get him to go for it, you might want to just drop him some L and take him shopping.

Elora, how cool is this!!! Neat that your hubby wants to share SL with you!
Why not just figure out what you would like to buy him ... pick a shape, skin, shoes and everything ... then get his password, and outfit his AV in one session. Then he can change the password to something you don't know. He doesn't have to know you spent money on it, and you don't have to spend a lot. That way he can have a good skin, hair and shoes.
Lots of guys seem to do fine with 4 sets of clothes:

Here's the ONE good thing: He LOVES to shop! Can you believe it? A guy that loves to go shopping? I hate it. He's the one that goes on the binges. I have to pull the credit card from him Yea, I know setting up a guy is tough. Especially if you are the kind of guy who is artistic and concerned with appearances. However, on the other hand he is also sort of lazy about doing this so maybe it will work out. He'll definitly want to do the shape himself, since he's creative. He'd consider it a challenge, like I did. Plus he won't want to look like every other guy - all bulked out. He actually asked me if he can look like a short, stocky Italian guy (which he is) and I said of course; you just have to play around with the sliders until you get what you want out of it. And I know he'd be welcome at the Hangout, I was just teasing

Put on a copy of your shape, go into appearances, change to MALE, tweak about a bit, and give it to him. (Disclaimer - I have no idea if just changing this in Appearances will remove any chromosome-dictated body parts but then he might not notice if you give it to him while he's got clothes on.) Developing your AV is, to me, part of the SL fun. If he can't even be bothered to find himself some hair, are you sure he'll even stick around? And, also, if he's happy in newbie skin, why not leave him like that? He'll figure it out eventually. B.

Lucrezia's newbie kit has some good landmarks and tips in it, not the least of which is the advice on hair and skins for newcomers from some of better designers (landmarks and instructions...some good male skins and hair as well). Keep in mind, most of those offers expire after the account passes it's 30 day old mark.
Have him resgister with SLExchange and OnRez, and check out all the great freebies there as well.

Get him cool shades, too. Guys love shades. And they don't have prim lashes to worry about.
And a leather jacket.

Yesterday, he was already making grand plans for my new land already and started building me stairs! I'm like "slow down!" I do need the help but still, after being here alone for all these months, it will take some getting used to. He isn't even so sure if he's into it or not yet, so we shall see. But your idea sounds like a good one. It could work. I'd just fix up his inventory for him so he doesn't have to deal with running around (which he has little time for truthfully). And most likely, he would just wear mostly jeans and shirts 90% of the time.

Body Basics. They have both male and female avatars for free... skins, hair, shapes, and entire avatars in a single package. Often busy, but usually not too laggy.

And he always forgets his sunglasses in RL! Very basic, nothing fancy. /me sees myself becoming a Women of the Land, milking cows, tending chickens, growing corn...

If nobody else gets to you first... when I get home tonight, I can pass you a folder with a variety of denim jackets, denim jeans (including 'painters jeans' for that 'been working on stuff all day' look), tennis shoes, and so on.
But I still reccomend taking a look at Body Basics for the skin, shape, etc. at least as a start.

he's already learning how to build and not sure if he's into it? I STILL don't know how to build, and I'm obviously addicted.

New York is where I'd rather stay. I get allergic smelling hay. I just adore a penthouse view. Dah-ling I love you but give me Park Avenue.
...The chores. ...The stores. ...Fresh air. ...Times Square
You are my wife. Good bye, city life. Green Acres we are there.

And a leather jacket. Why do I feel completely left out because I don't have any shades. Now I have to go find some. I had no idea that I needed any. Trout almost never squints. I do have a leather jacket, though. You know what else you need to get him, Elora? You know...he's your husband and all. He needs one of THOSE...This is your chance to get him a nice one, so he isn't chasing you around with some bizarre-looking newbie rod.

In front of one of my stores, I have freebie boxes. One of them is a complete male avatar. PM if you need more details.

/me pages through landmark folder to see if she still has the PrimOptics store address. hmm. My job doesn't recognize holidays because then people will ask for the day off. Church is a distant memory, but I recall Easter being important for some reason. We missed that one. I was Catholic, so it was ALWAYS the feast of St. Somebody-or-another who is responsible for the miracle of the ________. Being Catholic is like a giant game of Mad Libs. Alma Mater...There was the annual football game against that team that we always lost to. There was a LOT of beer involved, if I recall correctly. In my community, May Day is a major holiday. People parade for the rights of the downtrodden workers and demand collectivization of the farms. Sometimes they cover themselves with mud and sit naked in the street, blocking traffic. I wish I were kidding.

Finding a free male AO is going to be the toughest part. Skins ans clothes are getting more available all the time now. Sarah Nerd has a few male skins but I don't know the quality.
You can get good prim hair from the vouchers in the newbie pack. And speaking of hair ... I'm trying to remember where I saw it, but I have seen an AV skin with thick, curly chest hair somewhere.

I forgot about the AO. Yosef is right. You're never going to find a decent free male one. If you want to save money, hook him up with a copy of ZHAO II and look for the animations he really needs. Walk, sit, and a few stands at a minimum. You can probably find a few of those free, and if you have to buy them, single animations usually aren't that expensive. Come to think of it, I've seen some pretty weird famale ones that were probably freebies. What's up with the "sexy walk" that has you listing 20 degrees to starboard as you walk?

I still use a descendant of such an item I got back when I started, and it uses an animation called "power walk". If you want one with all kinds of other options or poses, though, that could be an issue.
