Okay...I've lurked for a month and have been reading and learning much and now I've got a question (I hope it's okay to post here...feel free to move if not): I live inworld in a spaceship/skypod that I've spent a while furnishing with unlinkable stuff...so I can't move the thing without a great deal of effort. My neighbors have beachfront "valuable" property, and I guess they want to protect their really nice area from the sight of my ship with very large trees. At first the trees intruded just a wee bit across property lines. Now, they've put up massive trees that extend fully 1/3 into my land and into my home/ship. I can't even walk around indoors because the branches block my vision! Mind you, I live BEHIND them so my ship does not block their coastal view. What do I do? Do I have any rights? I don't want to be mean, but sheesh! What does one do in cases like this?

Thanks, one de-lurker! :o

(practice this first before trying with your "real stuff";)

look in the tools menu it has an option "select only my objects"

then edit one of you objects in the upper left corner of your view area.

then use the mouse (holding left click) to highlight all your objects, the endges will light up.

Making sure your WHOLE kit and caboodle is highlighted you can move it all at once using the arrows.

Go slow.

Practice it with a few dropped boxes first.

Talk to your neighbors and see if they'll move them. If they won't and you're Premium, on Mainland, put in a support ticket. If you're living on a private island, talk to the estate owner or manager.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Hi Bith! Colette above is right about moving your home. Do it at a time when SL is running well and there is no packet loss and all should be good.

In addition, if you ever wanted to just pick up and move to another parcel, you can use a feature called "coalescence" to move your entire home with furniture in place. You highlight the entire thing as Colette described, then "Take" it all at once. It will show up in your objects folder with an icon that looks like a pile of little boxes. It will be named for one of the objects in the group, seemingly randomly chosen ... for example, "Pose Stand". You may want to look in "Recent Items" for it and rename it immediately.

Then, when you rez it at your new place, everything will be in the same place relative to each other that it was when you "took" it. If you have an edit window open when you rez it (control-3), it will all be automatically selected when you rez, and you can move the entire thing at once.

Have fun!

Good tips on how to move your stuff. And yeah, you can probably get your neighbors to move their stuff, either through an AR for Parcel encroachment (on Mainland), or by talking with the Estate manager (on an Estate--doh! :o ). But I think your instinct to move your own stuff may be good. While you should be within your rights to build whatever you want on your own parcel (well, on Mainland, anyway), there are a lot of folks who think that sky builds should really be above the cloud layer, unless they have some visible means of support. That's kinda silly, but actually, I somehow find myself agreeing; not so much about the "no visible means of support" thing, but just... it's a little disconcerting to be on the ground with some massive structure hovering overhead. Guess it's some primitive "flea the pterodactyl" response. So, I bet if you move everything above the clouds somewhere, everybody will be happier (including you: it's less laggy up there). :)

After nearly five years of SL, I was never aware of this feature until today. Then again, I have never had to move an entire build and its contents. I guess even relics like myself can learn a few new things. :o

You could move your ship higher as suggested, it would be more private for you also. But at the same time I don't see why the neighbours should be allowed to place trees that intrude into your land like that even if you don't have buildings at ground level. The overlap would surely have been obvious to them when they placed the trees.
If this happened to me I think I'd move higher but also send a civilly (but firmly) worded IM or notecard to the neighbour, saying I'd moved out of their view but pointing out the intrusion and request they move their objects from overlapping the boundary. Leave a few days in case they're not online every day. If that didn't get results then I'd report the situation to LL (or landlord/estate owner), and ask for the items to be moved.

I've been here since 2004. I'm a virtual wealth of SL knowledge. While the SL forums do serve some purpose they are just so glaringly ugly in many aspects.

This website and these forums are supposed to represent Second Life and they don't do an entirely awesome job.

The hideously broken BB code all over the place. Apparently, their coder isn't being paid enough to do something about that.

The fact that even though BB code is broken on this forum, when you type in certain stuff, the forum automatically wraps it with bb code, even though the BB code doesn't work, not to mention the post editor still has an inborn BB code editor!

It makes my ears smoke just trying to fathom what they're thinking here.

No General Discussion forum. You simply can't just talk about 'stuff'. Half of these forums is dedicated to ads. I don't want to read ads all day.

I'm a partially avid poster on the SL(TM)exchange forums, and they have a much nicer layout and are an overall better forum...and hey they're BB Code works! And guess what, the evil BB Code hasn't toppled their empire yet! If LL made these forums more appealing and less 'uuggghhhh' I would love to be more active on them.

I posted a question...

The usual suspects made a total farce out of the thread...

The Lindens deleted it.

I never saw an answer.

"I started a joke, which started the whole world crying,
but I didn't see that the joke was on me, oh no.

I started to cry, which started the whole world laughing,
oh, if I'd only seen that the joke was on me.

I looked at the skies, running my hands over my eyes,
and I fell out of bed, hurting my head from things that I'd said.

Til I finally died, which started the whole world living,
oh, if I'd only seen that the joke was on me.

As improbable as it sounds after this long time, I think with a bit of patience, we can expect a bright shiny release of vBulletin here, in finite time. Although LL has yet to make an announcement (which is a bit worrisome), the plan is for the new Community Manager to take the forums under wing and spiffy-up the joint. The reason bbcode was turned off was that these forums are running some ancient version of the software that was vulnerable to an exploit in bbcode, and then LL had an extended fit of hand-wringing about whether they wanted to keep the forums around at all, and then there was a distraction about a Single-Sign-On approach for the LL web and SL client (a bunch of the customization of the software has to do with shared authentication between the main website and the forums), and then... oh, who knows? But last I heard, a couple weeks ago, the plan was to get a post-punchcard version of vBulletin here, sooner rather than later.

I've also heard that the old version has a problem with read-only access "leaking" into the ability to post, somehow, so just *maybe* No Payment Info On File folks will get access after the upgrade. Amazingly enough, there are some folks in the Volunteer groups who are NPIOF, and there's been no special authentication provision made for them, so they too have been unable to even read the Forums. Which is pretty sad. But I'm hoping for brighter days, soon.

Post, and post constructively, and you too will find you are regarded as a "regular" and accused of being part of the "clique."

Errrr, I've done that and haven't been accused of this. *sigh*

RA is in sore need of fresh blood - and some good old fashion "Why is there a box on my head" questions. Please help those addicted to helping and giving advice.
I'm still such a newbie I don't even know what to ask. So I read the forums. When I see something new, I go try it out when I log on. But here are a few things I have learned so far that I would never have known to ask.
Clear cache when things start getting buggy.
The inventory window has filers!!! OMG, this is so cool to know and my inventory is no where as big as some of you have.
You can't take off your shape, you have to put on a different shape. I have not needed to do this, but it's good know.

Oh, for what it's worth, I found the forum cartel before I knew these message boards were here. Rather the forum cartel found me. I guess you had to be there.

Are you an old lurker? or a new poster? Are you intimidated when it comes to RA?

No
Yes (sort of)
No

You could say I am a new lurker :)

So they cut off BB code and left it broken all over the place, because they can't upgrade their php version? I mean c'mon I've got my own php server that updates it's code for new updated versions automatically. I don't even have to do anything. And how many years have they left BB code broken on here? It's ridiculous.

Well, they would have to update the vBulletin version to work with... well, hell: Yes, it's still ridiculous. :o

But, as I mentioned, for a while, LL thought that rather than get us to provide tech support on these forums free of charge, they'd just shutdown... uh.... :o Right: ridiculous.

Ahem.

LOOKING FORWARD, though... :)

You're right, these forums are in sore need of a make-over. Glad to see you, though. Your SL knowledge is needed and would be appreciated here. Maybe not by LL, but by us regular folks...

Not sure you or others are aware, but there's a Sticky (BBCode Emulation in Greasemonkey) at the top of this page concerning an alternative. If you are using Firefox, it helps in posting and viewing in these forums. Try it out.

Hi everyone, I am a lurker on the forums. I have lurked here enough to know most of you by name and enjoy the commentary. People here have been nice to me personally and there has been no trouble getting questions answered here for me. There are a lot people here who have been around for a while and can be very helpful. I agree with the idea of having a general discussion category, these forums are important for residents of SL.

I stumbled into the hangout last weekend by accident and everyone was very nice. It happens to be right by my friend's land and we were out walking around and came across it by accident! Out front by the beach there were two guys in a jeep driving around and then i noticed there was a group of people dancing up above so we went up. I was surprised when i looked at the land info and found it was the forum hangout. It was nice to see the people who's names i remember from the forums who were up there dancing away, what was funny was that its hard to be sure about everyone's gender until you see their avatar in person!
