I have to say I have posted about 8 questions (with really easy solutions!) on here and always have gotten good advice that was right to the point. I don't post because #1 I haven't been on here long enough to offer any help to a person in need and #2 I feel that everyone does know each other really well and it's kind of like I know my answer or opinion would not be good enough here (I know... my reasoning skills are off) and I don't feel like feeling unwelcome. <snip>

But guess what? A thread has been started all ready- So hi! I have been on SL about 2 months now and I am having a great time. In RL (I don't mind sharing a little) I am a speech pathologist and I work primarily with preschoolers with disabilities. There is so much more about SL I would like to get into, like building, buying land, and other many things people can do here. I am always impressed with the knowledge that many people here have about computers/building/ and other SL topics. This board has been helpful to me with my questions and I appreciated it. (and if anyone ever has a speech/language question they want answered- just message me- I like to help too!)
Bye!

Hi! Nicetahmeetcher!
Please, feel welcome, and pipe up if you have any suggestions. Ever heard the phrase "from the mouths of babes"?

You'd be surprised by the number of things that get solved because some new person says "but why not..."

heck, I think some of the "clique" members like the rare-posters more than the prolific ones

I'd agree with that if I was part of the clique.

oh yeah... and welcome to the other lurkers, too.

Not many new posters here, lol. Either they don't really exist, or they have nothing to say at the moment.
Not many new people sticking it out long enough to bother asking a question. Also, this forum is not publicized. Most don't even know it exists.

I think this explains why all the lame drahma has been drummed up over the last few days. The regulars have no questions to answer. Nothing to do but turn on each other.

I usually find the answers through the search option.

To second Lorimae, search is a wonderful thing. But after almost a year... here's my first post.

I just can't think of anything to say for thread replies usually.

Many don't, and (maybe unfortunately) it still doesn't stop them from posting, lol.

It isn't that I'm shy or anything, it's just that sometimes I get so caught up in reading everything that I forget or run out of time time to post.

Yes, I'm beginning to think it doesn't have much to do with shyness, and more to do with choice.

I am also newbie but I just jump right in somewhere I feel like w/o second guessing myself or what other ppl who know each other here will say.

I'm sorry. It must have been a Freudian slip. I was an old Battlestar Gallactica fan.

Monjo, I think most people respond mainly to the content of the post rather than the poster (with a few obvious exceptions). I know I do. And I think people who seem to "know" each other here do so only because they post a lot. Actually, we're all, or nearly all, total strangers to one another except for here and at the Forum Cartel Hangout, where believe me, EVERYONE is welcome. Post, and post constructively, and you too will find you are regarded as a "regular" and accused of being part of the "clique."

Oops, didn't see you there, Archer.

I like using search, too. It can sometimes be difficult at times to find certain answers, though. That's why I really appreciate when thread starters use the subject in their title.

Many 1st posts! :)

I have probably learned more by lurking around here then I have inworld. The subjects that are here r things that I don't feel confident enough about to even start a SL conversation.
Like 'why certain files come to the top on 'search''.
And the couple of times I have asked questions on this forum, I have had good answers. (allthough they didn't always completely solve the problem. Like when my brand new green high heels disappeared when I put on my outfit. I see now that the system thought I was doing a complete clothes change, but I still don't know why it parked the shoes in the box that my shoulder cat came in. The box was just sitting in inventory. And although I DID get the new shoes back I STILL don't know what happened to that damned cat. ;-(.

Anyway I'm glad you all are here!

I have been a member of more than my fair share of forums, but I have to admit when I first came here I was a bit intimidated. As I scrolled down the page I saw category after category. Categories for builders, renters, sellers etc. I clicked on Resident Answers and what I saw to me seemed like a mess. Page after page of threads with 20 pages. I found it hard to navigate and find what I was looking for. I was afraid to post at first because I didn't want to get my head bitten off so I lurked for a great while and I still kinda do but the poster in me is coming out little by little. (LOL) There are a lot of very informative people in these forums and I have learned quite a bit that I didn't know about certain things that Our Hosts should tell people when they sign up. I now visit every day and read most posts. I am not easily offended by any means, opinions are like. . . . . well you know the rest LOL I have seen some posters quick to jump on peoples back for their views but see the next sentence up. I have found that when I post in a thread and I come back the next day to read the rest of it, the thread is gone, lost in the shuffle and it's hard to keep track of sometimes. Kinda makes me think of The Wizard of Oz: My, people come and go so quickly around here. I also think Our hosts having the forum set to payment info only hurts them because there are so many who can't come here for the help or don't know the forum is here at all and are stuck on OI getting poked by a floppy dong listening to HooooOOOOoooooo over and over again. It's a shame really because these forums could help so many others and Our hosts don't seem to give a crap IMHO.

Yes, limiting the Forum to payment info only, is another one of those paradoxical decisions
LL makes ,considering their Happy San Fran Roots. A bit elitist if you ask me. All residents should be able to at least Read these forums.

I have a feeling that some don't know how fast questions get answered here as opposed to other places. Sometimes, you'll see a couple of pages of answers, but the OP never comes back to reply - to let us know the problem was solved or for a thank you, etc.

I've often thought they must have just posted and left, thinking it was going to take much longer... I think you can subscribe to a particular thread if you like. I'll have to check, as I never use it.

Hello All

Wonderful idea for a thread! I lurk and read and learn alot. My experience from asking questions has not been that great - lots of negative responses rather than genuine help - so i tend to contribute what i can rather than ask anything. But with that said...here goes. I'm jojo, been in SL almost a year. i came in only for fun and have ended up being in biz here...who knew that was even possible... LOL. I started helping folks decorate their homes because they liked mine, got into interior design, opened a small resale shop, opened more shops, bought land, consolidated to one shop and now make most of my products and enough real money to take cash out of SL as well as pay my tier. I have also gotten into marketing pretty heavily, even offering marketing consulting and helping folks get new biz set up in SL. I teach classes in a variety of marketing topics as well. I am marketing director for Etopia Company which has two educational sims dedicated to modeling sustainable community with residential, commercial, natural and educational spaces all integrated in a thriving nice community. I have done alot of the sim marketing and biz planning as well as handling the day to day operations. I LOVE what i do. I learn every single day and am constantly in awe at the amazing creations and wonderful things we can see and do in SL. And i am thrilled to be a part of the often beta, always cutting edge and sometimes frustrating world. Please feel free to ask me anything...you can usually find my on etopia or in my store helping new people, helping customers or just chatting with visitors. Take care and nice meeting all of you! waving...jojo

At the top of the thread just click the Thread Tools drop down box. There's an option to subscribe. You can choose whether to get an email for responses or not.

Some have said they use it for all the threads they are active in. I only use it for the ones that are really important to me or has things (like great places to visit) that I want to save.

Is that a fact? I missed the memo that stated this was a 'payment info only' boards. I guess that keeps out some riff raff, but it also excludes many potentially beneficial contributers. Dont think I like the concept.

I think it was to limit alt abuse.

still letting them read the forums wouldn't introduce alt abuse, I wouldn't think.

I just can't think of anything to say for thread replies usually. Besides, most of my questions have been asked and I usually find the answers through the search option.

I third Lorimae's response, I tend to get good results from using search, so I haven't asked anything so far, and I'm usually too shy to post on any forums. But I do like to visit here so I thought I'd say hello before I dash back into hiding :)
