LOL. we (two Australians) were in LA when that movie was about to come out, in a department store, and overheard two employees we had been talking to discussing the movie and one said "...yes but Hamlet with an Australian accent?" Then looked really embarrassed when she realised we had overheard.

My wife: "Why, do you think the character would be better with an American accent?"

No answer....

I have an answer: the character would be more fun to mock. Think about all the times Kevin Costner had an "accent" in whatever movie he was in.

It was a veritable laugh riot.

Well then perchance i need to use smaller words and more comas as that is the comprehension level we are on, or is it a case of it has been well explained, repeatedly and you refuse to understand?

It's really not that hard. This is not an English class! You people are very obviously not English instructors some might question if your capable to instruct anything judging from the patience and compassion level. No where in any of the sticked threads above does it say anywhere that this is an primarily English forum nor does it even allude to that fact.

"my wife has this " and "i have that" is certainly way more anecdotal than anything i have posted. How hard is it to find a shift key? You ask? for some as easy as walking for other as easy as building an atomic bomb is for you.(yes there might be a few that could ultimately produce said bomb but the effort would be staggering, and that is one of the points) It's not just finding the key mind you, it's getting the fingers to work and catching it when they don't. It truly becomes the 400 pound gorilla in the living room. they just can't see it, no matter how hard they want to.

It's not a cop out; if somebody can't see it or does not notice it, because that is the way there mind works, they simply can't see it. Do i know how the OP's mind is working? No! Do you know? obviously not.

You can QFT each other all day and sit in a corner writhing your hands and patting each other on the back over victory, but it still does not change things. When you correct, belittle or openly complain about somebodies use of English then your the one's who ultimately looks small. It truly is not my place or your place to do so.

I might have more compassion if a person did those things in private, actually trying to help ,but to do so openly in a forum? The only reason it's ever done openly is to put the other person down, possibly because your the one with the understanding problem, maybe an inferiority complex or that you can't really poke holes in there argument so we must kill the messenger instead, who knows there maybe other reasons but i assure you they are from a very negative and dark side as well.(the condition is not negative only the actions that steam from it)

I'm sorry this happened to you. It is insulting, but personally I wouldn't worry about it. I'd just make sure that all of my 800 friends knew what a jerk this store owner is and certainly it's no place you'll ever want to visit again anyhow. ;)

Also, don't worry about the rude people here either. It's ok if you don't spell or punctuate to their standards. We're not all so judgemental. If it's phonetically readable, hey...works for me!

Oh no, not Eurocentric! Of course English is an European language and like it or not, this is an English speaking forum for the most part.

*coughs* Actually, it should be "an" in this case. Except if they changed grammar rules during the last ten years or so... or my English teacher got that one horribly wrong. ;)

Your teacher got it horribly wrong.

'An' is used before a vowel, 'a' before a consonant. Vowels are sounds, not letters, although we generally use a, e, i, o and u to represent the vowel sounds. Most people remember that 'y' can be used as both a vowel (fry) or as a consonant (yacht). However, both 'e' and 'u' can also be used as consonants, for example:

He got a place at a university

He is a European

In both these cases the initial sound is a consonant (yoo ni versity, yuro pean), and so take 'an' not 'a'.

Conversely, you can also use 'an' before certain consonants, when they are used as abbreviations or acronyms, because of the way in which their letter forms are spelt, for example:

He used an 'F' word (because the letter 'F' is spelt 'eff', which starts with a vowel sound)

An LSE exam (bacause the letter 'L' is spelt 'ell', again, starting with a vowel sound).

This is true for the letters f, l, m, n, r, s, and x

What is important, when deciding whether to use 'an' or 'a' is the initial sound of the word that follows, not the letter form.

When you correct, belittle or openly complain about somebodies use of English then your the one's who ultimately looks small. It truly is not my place or your place to do so.

(and nobody has yet came up with a compiling argument why the snobbery is justified and/or acceptable)

As I look over the thread again, the problem is that you're doing the majority of the correcting, belittling, complaining, and snobbery. You're complaining about things that no one had done in this thread until after you started complaining. You're playing "my teacher is better than your teacher". You're asking people to try to understand the other side, without trying to understand their side.

You might be anal-retentive if...

* you eat the M&Ms in color order.
* you fold your dirty clothes before putting them in the hamper.
* From Miranda:
o you have to have all boxes in the kitchen facing the same way and in order by size.
o you have all your canned goods organized by type, flavor, and use.
o and they're all facing the front.
o all you books, CDs, and movies have to be alphabetical order.
* you require no less than 200 threads per inch on your sheets. (Peggy)
* ...and they are tucked so tightly that you really could bounce a quarter on them.
* you alphabetize your spices. ( Bert )
* you actually bother trying to convince someone that the 3rd millenium hasn't begun yet (or that it *has* begun).
* you organize your closet by color, season, and fabric. ( Jennifer )
* you flame every person who sent you email because the emails weren't spelled correctly or gramatically correct.
* you remove the tires to wash inside the wheel-wells of your vehicle. (Pat)
* you collect the little postcards in magazine issues...
* ...for recycling.
* every e-mail reply that you send has been through a grammar checker...
* ...and you correct the original message.
* you're on a "calorie-counting" diet and you count the calories in the hot sauce on your "Big Beef Burrito Supreme".

Then my teacher did too.

But like I said before, it isn't about being perfect. I don't expect anyone to be perfect. It is about making an effort to show some respect for those who are reading your work.

Well the fact there is 4 derogatory posts belittling somebody for grammar before my first post at number 15 I would have to say your summation is a bit flawed.

Does it need to state it in the stickies? Pretty obvious to most people that it is an English speaking forum.

And yes, I know how hard it is to find a shift key. How hard it is to get fingers to work properly. How hard it is to even walk on some days. I don't want or need your compassion. But it makes you feel better about yourself. " I showed pity on a misfortunate today. I am such a nice decent person." So keep patting yourself on the back and telling us what a kind person you are. But I tell you, lowering standards doesn't help anyone.

You have yet to put forth any argument. Just post after post of your opinion and your snotty "I am better because I have compassion." mantra.

Don't worry about this, my English teacher in high school pointed out that when people correct spelling and english outside of english class, that it is motivated by there inability to understand and compile ideas,in other word they are afraid they might miss something and look foolish so to make sure they don't look bad first they point out the spelling errors (I have amended this to exclude those that work in print and when making proposals)

Either that or someone is complaining that a post is really hard to read because it doesn't have any paragraphs or line breaks, or other ways to help navigate the disjointed narrative.

Thank You

To everyone that actually addressed my question Thank You a lotta. I never intended to make this into a grammar lesson or a slam on my part .. I will definately not come here no more for answers.
Seems like most people were so worried about the grammer and spelling that the question didnt even matter to them anyway .. so I wonder why bother with the forums anyway .

Next time I will follow the advice of the few that did actually try and make sence of what i was asking in the first place.. I thought i made it clear the rats are attatched to the advatar and dont leave nothing rezzed ,, but maybe i didnt ..anyway yea guess wanting the money back was wrong,

In closing I can say i am very good at not littering up a land owners property,, if I get kicked off line I will come back to get something if its out on someones land !! Futhermore I always help people if i can I have given 3 different strangers 100L because they was new,:P and needed it ,.:) myself I would have found them and payed them back if they helped me,,:D but nope they didnt ,, but thats the difference between myself and others i guess,, Not All of course..

Grammar is important. It's what pretty much keeps society understanding each other. Without it, we'd just be a bunch of LoL-tards who have no idea what the other is saying. I admit English is probably one of the hardest ones to master. I'm a native speaker and I still don't claim mastery.

That aside, Lotta, I would have helped or given a helpful comment, but I couldn't understand the content of the opening post. It was hard for my brain to parse and even harder for my eyes to follow. I do prefer to at least see paragraphs as your last post exhibited, because it allows me to grasp each concept before moving on to another. Thank you for the last post, because I can now offer some helpful comments.

What might have happened with the rat being returned was that it might have somehow gotten "dropped." This could have happened either by miss-click during lag or by server-side error. And sometimes "dropped" items take a long time rezzing, especially during laggy situations, so you might not have seen it before you left the area.

On to the owner's overreaction. While rude and annoying, I'd simply let it go and never shop at anything related to the owner. I'd also tell my friends why I refuse to shop with that owner. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your point of view), land owners can ban whomever they want for whatever reason. LL will do nothing about it.

Unfortunately, asking for your money back on an item you purchased just because you were banned? You lowered yourself to the owner's standard with that. I'd venture to say that it was a bit tacky, because it was obvious that it was due to the banning. I'd have just shrugged it off after the 'excuse' and if the item was good, keep it or if it wasn't, delete it. Heck, I'd have probably kept it as a reminder of what happened.

(Yes, I did try to read the opening post!)

If you're asking for help or advice from other people, you ARE under an obligation to make yourself as clear as possible.

That said, this whole thread has just turned into one big .
