That's a "culture"?????
No

Pep (But neither is wearing a scarf on an airplane; that's like wearing a hat inside a car.)

PS That's really living in the past.

Jig, I can't be too careful. You are a two bag woman.

Pep (You cover the head of a one bag woman with a paper bag during sex so you don't have to look at her face; with a two bag woman you put a bag over your own head as well, in case hers accidentally slips off.)

Oh how droll.

You should be careful; your so sharp Pep, one of these days you'll cut yourself.

I was driving, flying and doing perverted things before you ran away from school the first time dear.

Pep (Farms? Is that where they have cow's nests?)

PS I don't think so, but if it satisfies you to be Cleopatra, so be it.

I judge other people by their reaction to what I wear.

Think about it, Jig.

Dont hate to say it. Say it. What we do is what we are. I cant help it; people should look like they have a flair for life and colour and beauty and all teh other gorgeous and flash ways we can be seen. Nowadays we ar eso lucky to have so much beauty around us so being a dowdy old pheasant is sad.

I bet in real you look as smart as possible, Brenda. And I bet you look down at men's shoes as I always do to be certain they are wearing fashionable and lovely creations and not some pimply runners that have seen better days.

Damn. Busted.

*I'm beginning to think I poke Jig because I see a lot of me in my younger days in her.

Probably because the majority of Americans think they look stupid on men.

Truth FTW!

Hey, when I got in line for the gay geek gene, I missed the opportunity for the gay style gene, and had to settle for the gay cooking gene.

Now should I make quiche or curry tonight?
Back off girls, he's MINE. Oh waitaminnit, he's gay... rats. :(

We all judge people by their appearance. It's in our genetic makeup and we might not have survived as a species if we didn't. The first impression we make is our appearance both in real life and in SL. The second is when we open our mouths. I'm not going to start a conversation with a guy that has griefer written all over him.

That doesn't mean I make the impression I intend to make. I have to dress in casual office wear in real life. I really hate it when people call me "sir." There's an old Hendrix song with the lines:

White collared conservative flashing down the street,
Pointing his plastic finger at me.
Point on Mr. Business man.
You can't dress like me.

Dang! He was right. :(

I always judge people by what they wear cozm in a sense, the artistry of dressing and presentation shows me that the person I meet (in real or sl) has self-esteem and an attitude about themselves that is healthy and not rooted in a more mundane approach to life. "I look plain and ordinary so I must have a bigger brain" doesnt work for me.

I like Waterford crystal glasses to drink out of and not plastic cups - having style and care is not sinful but nowadays lacking dress sense appears to be a "ticket" for meaningful conversation.

Interesting. I find the opposite to be true. Those who can feel comfortable in anything are generally more confident and much more interesting, and with higher self esteem, as they don't have to rely on artificial means to make their presentation for them.

So what qualities are you assigning to your judgments? You mentioned "style" and "care".....are you including .....wealth? intelligence? life experience? wisdom? kindness? thoughtfulness? passion?

You think you can determine all that by looking at one's shoes?

And in SL....a hot av and stylish clothes determines that?

Have you ever tried to shop for men's clothes that don't look terrible? It's way too much work.

I hate to say it, but sometimes it seems Jig judges people in SL by everything they do.

Pretty f&%$ing much this ^

I don't worry too much about what other people do in SL, as long as it's not hurtful to me. While I do a reasonable job of keeping up my appearances as both me and my alt, who is by all accounts impeccably put together (and no one was more shocked than me,) I don't really care about how others dress. We all have different ideas on style, and it's subjective. You don't like how I dress? I really don't give a shit, and think you should probably find something more constructive to do with your time.

I think that the fact that your judging this way and concerned with others' self-esteem shows that your more than likely projecting. When we see people this way, we're looking in the mirror. Our job at this point is to stop looking outside of ourselves and find out what is really going on. Happiness is an inside job and is never found by tearing other's apart.

And, more simply, we all have different priorities, as Mickey said. While you think drinking out of Waterford crystal is good, I have no use for it. I'd rather buy my son a new bike or take him to a movie, and drink out of a clean glass or cup that is not so special. Rather than buy fashionable clothes or a scarf, I'd rather spend my extra money on a new CD or five, since music is a priority in my life.

If looking good and fashionable is important to you, knock yourself out. But please don't judge those of us who would rather spend our time and money on something else. But, if you must, please know I don't really care. It says more about you than any of us.

Which is why gay men are God's gift to the world for style and intellect and charm.

(well, a majority are. Some dress as badly as straight men)

Ok, first point:

Of course I judge on the basis of appearances. But that's very far from all that I base my judgments on. Clothing is a means of expression, but it's only one possible mode, and it frequently proves misleading when one actually begins to talk to the person in question. I'm sort of surprised at so many yes/no and black/white responses to this issue here: judging someone -- or better, perhaps, getting to "know" them -- is an enormously multifaceted process of which appraising appearances is just one relatively unimportant part. But it IS a part.

Second point:

I want to question the unspoken premises of Jig's OP here. I think that a great many women in SL have absolutely APPALLING taste in clothes. They can't ALL be men in disguise! And this may be due in some small measure to the fact that, despite the sheer number of fashion choices available to women in SL, the majority of what is available (and especially inexpensively available) is just plain shite. There are, of course, exceptions, but two basic "looks" dominate women's fashion in SL: "pretty" or "trashy." If I am judging someone's aesthetic sense (not, I emphasize, her character, intelligence, or morality), it is usually by those who manage to avoid either of these that I am most impressed.

I myself never wanted to look trashy (although I certainly don't mind "sexy," which is different), and got sooooooo bored by "pretty" sometime around my third month in SL that I almost stopped wearing skirts and dresses altogether for a period.

So, my basic problem with the OP is the fact that it is gender biased. Men may have fewer clothing stores in SL to choose from, but I don't think women are necessarily much better off in terms of actual choice.

(Sorry. In a grumpy mood tonight . . . )

It's also about time men started wearing ties again. I love them so much I collect them. They're sexy, supremely colourful, mood-enhancing and make a statement.
And cologne. Please wear cologne.
Men please shave properly!! Be as closely shaved as YOU want certain portions of our bodies to be shaved. And dont shave your balls. They look like ping-pong balls that have been buried for fifty years.
And please buy a selection of belts. Italian leather belts, please.

Well good luck finding attractive ties in SL at any rate. I have been slowly importing PSed versions of my RL ties to compensate. Today in SL I wore a dark green, burgundy and gold silk repp tie, in a smart four-in-hand knot. Of course in RL I wore an ascot today, something you cannot find in SL for any price.

Oooooo. Who's your favourite designer? I love Ermengilda Zegna. And Jhannie Barnes. Women should be so fortunate!
Of course you know why its called a four-in-hand knot but I bet not many do.
I like that colour scheme.
Why are bow ties so hard to find?

To me, it sounds like it's not so much judging people (as in them as a person) by their looks, as it is an internal ruling out of a potential mate/lover/partner based on their looks, style, and whatnot. Everyone does that internally at some point, and to varying degrees. One can try to self-analyze why we do that and the answers will always come out sounding superficial no matter how you state them, because they basically *are* superficial reasons, but ones that are firmly rooted in genetics and personal preferrence.

Example: In SL I never judge a person except by how they act, even then I'm not overly critical, but I admit I nearly always sort people out into catagories based on their appearance. I happen to *really* like AV's that are customized, personalized, with attention to detail and realism that rivals my own "almost OCD" in that area. Reguardless of what someone is wearing at the time, evidence of those traits I like show through, and I'll always know after a good perv whether they have that, potential for it, or they don't. Absolutely that's superficial and I know it, but I don't make any apologies for knowing what I like/want in someone elses AV, or for discounting someone if their AV just doesn't "do it" for me. Either way, my personal tastes in looks don't influence whether I like someone or not, or whether I think they're a good person or an asshat.. That's for them to determine by how they act, not look.
