You know, with these threads about too many users online at once, and about bots, I'm a bit confused. Are traffic bots still useful? I thought Search ranking had changed and wasn't based on traffic anymore?

I read that they changed it back again.. but with the newest RC it may have changed yet again.

I think LL is about as confused about the thing as we are.

Wow really? They kept the old style tabs - cool, I mean I think traffic is obviously useless now it is gamed but for me the new style serach interface is just not productive either. If they kept the old style tabs then I would be quite happy.

I agree though, they do seem confused.

Gabriele.. I have been looking through the bot thread (hehe) and can't find it except for a post by Cristele that said something about the new search was going to help get rid of traffic bots but now that is thwarted. I remember it had something to do with the HTML in the new search locking up some people's PCs so they took it out. They may have fixed that problem now.. I dunno. I just wish they would not announce stuff until they know what the hell they are doing.

Thanks for that Mac, just one more reason to stick with the released client until they sort out what they want to do.

Yeah, that is usually the way to go. I guess I am just into pain. Not only do I deal with the regular SL problems, I use the RCs so I can pile even more on.

New search worked VERY well for me. I don't know why some people got the lock ups. I am on a mission now to find the info though.

We are continuing to iterate on our improvements to the Search feature. Thank you for your feedback! Although the release notes for 1.20 RC7 indicated that Search>Places was changed to use web-based search, this tab has been returned to its previous client interface, which includes “Sort by alphabetical” or “Sort by traffic” options. Please see VWR-7335 in the Issue Tracker for more information about this.


The ongoing Search project does aim to transform more functionality to the web-based feature (as currently present in the Search>”All” tab). These plans included the switch from “Popular Places” to Showcase. We are continuing to research and discuss the future of traffic with the Resident community. Together we’re working toward an improved method of providing metrics both to land owners and to all Residents of Second Life.

The reversion of this tab (Search>Places) was in response to feedback directed to the Search team, headed by Jeska Linden. Many good points were made as to problems with the "new" layout we introduced in 1.20(7), compared to the "old" layout that has existed in previous versions.

For this reason, the Search team decided to leave Search>Places to be the *same* in the 1.20 viewer as in the 1.19.1(4) viewer. This does not imply the team will revert this permanently, or all Search tabs.

By contrast, the Search project does intend to make future improvements/progress on Search; but it was simply too early/sudden to do this in viewer 1.20 without more opportunities for feedback.

Well I never got lockups but I used to just be able to go down the list and see the LM type info on the right which was fine for rapid skipping to find the one that looked like what I wanted.
The new one is all forward and back, forward and back, which web like delays in between and whilst the keyword relevancy is reasonable, its not so good that I can get away without forward and backing all the time until I find what I need and so search become too laborious to cope with I am afraid. If/when the old tabs go I am sticking to OnRez and SLX or straight LMs from people .
