Nobody will every replace Sean Connery as James Bond. The rest are just imitations -- some better imitations than others, but still not the real thing. And he is even sexier and more alluring now than he was then.

:)

/me pops in to agree emphatically. There is only one Bond. I'll give Lazenby honorable mention, I do like that movie as well. But all the pretenders...meh. OK, Timothy Dalton was OK. But that blond guy? OY!

REALLY? I wouldn't have thought you'd go for the New Agey "Sensitive guy" kind of Bond. Daniel Craig is definitely a bit of alright, though. And Pierce Brosnan had his moments.

Roger Moore was definitely icky and creepy, though.

Timothy Dalton is my favorite Bond, Pierce Brosnan number two,

but Daniel Craig is in a class by himself. (I mean, he is GREAT.) He is the *only* scary Bond.

ETA - ha, Scylla! I posted mine before seeing yours.

Yeah..for some reason Dalton appealed to me. I've alway liked him, ever since Flash Gordon.
Pierce Brosnan was OK, too. I didn't care for Moore at all, the only one of his I like is Moonraker.
You girls can have Blondie Bond.

*tacklehugs Seven.

Yes, but OMG what a first-rate misogynist fascist asshole he is in person. I struggle with this one: he WAS the best Bond, and he was kind of sexy, but what an utterly repellent man. :(

I agree. I was so bummed to read that he was a nasty naster, and I think that's when I tried to separate the actors from the roles they play.

Yeah. I generally think of actors as sort of cyphers anyway, empty boxes that get "filled" with whatever role they are playing.

Although there are a few I admire for their personalities and political activism. Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Angelina Jolie (to a degree) . . .

. . . George Clooney . . .

/me wafts off into another reverie . . . :D

Oh yes. :)

I learned a lng time ago to seperate entertainers from their roles/talents.They are humasn, they have failings. If i were to judge their work on their personal/political/social views, then very many would get a pass from me. I am not a fan of Entertainer Activists. While they have a right to express their views like any other citizen, they sometimes think that their celebrity gives them some sort of insight or expertise that the rest of us can't have. Sometimes this is done by the hype machine itself. I do give credit to those, like the few Scylla mentioned who do seem sincere about their beliefs and causes, even if I don't particularly agree with them, but I always cast a jaundiced eye at most celebrity activists as mere publicity hounds.

I am a fan of The Golden Days of Hollywood, where the studios kept a strict line between actors public and private lives. In a lot of ways, I wish that was still true today.

Yeah, I take your point. Although it seems to me rough justice to suggest that an entertainer cannot express a political view merely because she or he is an entertainer. They have as much right to public expression (and I would include someone I find icky like Mel Gibson in this too) as anyone else: the media machine does the rest.

And if you really DO passionately believe in something, it is pretty natural (and, in most circumstances, commendable even) to use all of the tools at your disposal to advocate for that. After all, isn't that why we admire figures like Albert Schweitzer or Jane Goodall? These people devoted EVERYTHING to their causes.

I think a lot of times celebrities look at their lives and realize that they have been making insane money playing dress up and make-believe. The they start to question "making something" of their lives, and latch on to various causes.

I can't fault someone using celebrity to back something they believe in. Heck, if I were rich and famous you'd better believe I would be pushing my two favorite charities (habitat for humanity, and heifer project) every chance I got. I'd turn my oscar speech into a 2-minute infomercial fund drive! :D

Yes. Of the older Bonds, Sean Connery was the best. Sadly, when I hear James Bond, Moore's image pops into my head. Probably 'cause I see his movies more than the others. I do think Daniel Craig is giving Connery a run for his money.

Kitsy ^.^

I don't disagree with any of that. For me it is a questrion of discerning where the pasiion ends and the self promotion and insincerity begins. No one can cast aspersions on the work Bono, for example, has done, or that Paul Newman, one of my favorites did. Martin Sheen is another I've always admired, if not agreed with a lot of times for his activism. On the other side, Gary Sinise is someone from Hollywood whose voice is regsitering with me.

Is it okay if I hide out here for a while? Until they all go away again?
