Hi all first time poster, long time reader.
Well I've been asking my friends in-world. But no one really seems to know. So I thought I would bring it to the forums.
Everyone knows that clubs have pretty much taken over the space of the late casinos. That is they are everywhere, and 90% of them are deserted.
Ad farms are another pointless eye sore of SL. And then you have the "freebie" places that are packed with campers and cookie cutter freebies.
But what does SL really need? What would you like to see?
Here are some thoughts I had:
- More parks. I've found some great beautiful places in SL. But they are few and far between and unadvertised, so also deserted. Unless you check out the map and click on random places then walk around like I do, you'd probably never find them.
- More cafe's/lounges. These are a great way to meet people, and have a lot of fun, without flashy lights and campers all over the place.
- More romantic spots. Partnering seems to be more popular than it was a few months ago. But unless you have a house or a private beach, where do you take your special someone?
I always see large numbers of green dots, and get excited because I think it's a happening place, and maybe I can go hang out and have a good time. But when I get there the only good time people are having is dancing on a pad AFK for $2L every 10 minutes...LOL.
What would you like to see in SL?

What would you like to see in SL? There are more romantic places than you think. Send me an IM and I could tell you about 10 or 20 that I love personally.. Cafe kinda.. seems silly to me lol.. sit and sip an espresso and talk.. when we dont really drink.. clubs without campers would be nice, and clubs that are less rave-like are nice too ^_^ But a cafe seems silly to me lol And there are groups devoted to making and maintaining parks in SL so yay there What I think should be seen more? Riots against ad-farms Actually, just zoning or a ban on them in general would rock.. more clear mainland without adfarms, and more lindens sighted in-world (By me lol)

Ok stability I thought was a given, and would have been my first choice also, but I'm talking about places in-world. Something that's new and hasn't been done (or at least butchered). Like a place to hang out I see 30,000+ people online and basically, as far as I can tell it's broken down like this:
Say 33,000 online.
15000 camping 10000 at their houses/islands/estates 5000 just sitting in a random spot talking on IM (hey, I do it sometimes) 3000 wandering aimlessly looking for something to do.
I'm really looking for an idea to build, Something small, but where people would enjoy coming. I don't want to open a shop because I actually like meeting people, and not just collecting their money.
Give me some ideas!

Part of the fun of discovering a hidden park is the fact it's hidden and has to be discovered. But for a cheat sheet, consult the SL Parks and Recreation Service, /327/04/202439/1.html and http://www.virtualparksandrec.com/.

#1 Priority should be stability. No point in building a great house if the floor falls out from underneath it.

Give me some ideas! In a small space prims are limited so it's hard to build much of an "attraction". People want to go where other likeminded people are. So a cafe with a specific theme might work.

I have a very lovely "little" garden I created on a 7k parcel.. It is open to the public but not advertised in any way.. I built it for my wife and I to enjoy.. But have no problem with others using it..
Will I ever advertise it? I doubt it, with word of mouth I am already getting a dozen visitors a day and don't want it crowded.. And yes it is perfect for lovers.. No sex poses, but lots of quiet cuddles spots with lovely views. I like the fact that you have to stumble upon it.. I have given some of my friends the LM, but that is about it..

STABILITY.
I'd love to be original, but that pretty much says it all.
As for "cafes," I wouldn't knock them. I think they are one variant of what a lot of people want in SL - places where they can come together with similarly-inclined people and just socialize. I think of that sort of venue as a variation on the discussion groups and affinity groups and interest groups who gather to talk about specific subjects. A "cafe" scene, whether it is actually a "cafe" in appearance or not, strikes me as one where people gather just to gather and socialize, even if the talk is no deeper than How about those Red Sox? and Is Tom Cruise or isn't he?, or even Nice weather we're having here, how about you?
The Forum Cartel Hangout has turned out to be such a place. I haven't been to The Blarney Stone in Dublin sim in quite a while, but it has always been another.

Decent search that did not depend on what someone is willing to pay for an ad.

How about a big bonfire in a nice woodsy setting, by a lake. There would be no 'structures' so less prims. Pass out marshmallows on a stick and tell stories (spooky or not). Maybe meet 2 or 3 times a week at specific times and days to cater to different time zones. Prepare one 'story' (in the beginning, you'll probably be the only one) and ask someone to volunteer for the following week. Afterwards, let the conversations be more general. Ask people to talk a little about themselves, what they've enjoyed doing so far in SL, best places they've visited, etc. Maybe a few of those 3000 who are wandering aimlessly would drop by on other days, or just make new friends, make your place the 'meeting' place. Just a thought...

I understand the obvious answer to what does SL need is stability, or a good inworld search feature, but I'm not a linden so I can't fix any of those things. (although I agree they need to get started on some of them.)

Show and Tell?
01-08-2008 20:10
Mystical Cookie advertises a 'show and tell' night at their sim, where people come and show what they've created. I've never been, but I've always wanted to go. It being Mystical Cookie, I imagine those creations are heavy on scripting.
Would people in the forums like a place to do "show and tell", I wonder? To have people look at their creations and applaud and make suggestions?
And drink coffee, of course.
We COULD use the Hangout land for this, I suppose ... no one seems to spend any time elsewhere than in the building, which is a pity. Or, one could build a place for this, with good changeable lighting, professional pose stand with a small variety of poses and rotate (handy if someone has built clothing), maybe a holovendor for if they're showing furniture. Oh, and a texture organizer for people to view textures that folks might want to show.
I could bring my 45 prim footbridge for people to laugh at.
Just a thot.

I think the campfire/storytime thing is a GREAT idea.
Depending upon the requirements, I'd likely be willing to serve as the story teller on occasion.

Art Galleries - not shops selling art BUT genuine galleries more like Phoenicia used to be. More mountains. Maybe some ocean liners actually sailing somewhere. An airline? Roads that work so I can ride my choppers. Caves. An underworld. Wild sims which are dangerous. Places which really do require dare and gaming skills. A moon station.

No wonder it takes so long for the money to arrive from there.
If you read to the bottom of the page about "Second Life Linden Dollars", for collection it tells you "Date a world with our sales agent at the second floor of west bank of Varrock, we will send you the runescape money face-to-face."
Maybe sending it via another game altogether is part of their security system... or it's a cut/paste job that someone bodged.
The words "avoid" and "plague" spring to mind, but no doubt just like SL banks, some mug will lose lots of money there.
