Perhaps the skin mesh is part of a long yerm plan to upgrade skeletal structure too, we might even get moving fingers and a few more attachment points:)

Ohh if you want to look better bent over braced against a pole full monty and definition is overly lacking, you might consider getting a prim attachment for yourself.

As far as a thong goes you are basically out of luck.

Why does this advice just ring of experience? :D

I believe avatar meshes are one of the long term improvement plans the lab are looking into.

Check out RealXtend.org to see some cool stuff being developed for the opensim community. Awesome meshes.

Hi all, first post on this forum, not a native speaker so I'll most likely sound weird, please be kind! :)

As a body modeller, I can't help being frustrated with obvious and easily fixable flaws in the avatar meshes - the female isn't as bad as the male though.

My main peeves :
- the cleft in the upper chest, big WTF here...
- the huge butt cleft that looks like a (n?) horrible accident when the avatar is sitting, goes up to the waist, and gives the jackets this embarrassing "curtain stuck in the window" look;
- the neck that remains ridiculously thin when seen from the side, no matter how you adjust the thickness;
- the awful upperarms (for the males) and lower legs... One gets used to it, but it was so glaring in the Flickr pics my friends showed to tempt me into SL that it simply had the opposite effect.
- the legs shape could be much smoother, I can get a *much* better look with half that number of polys!

Some other issues are more a matter of skin weights, like the distorsion of the shorts textures or the flat butt when sitting, or the transition from the abdomen to the chest; this would be easily fixed too, unless there are parameters I'm not aware of.

The morphs could also use some fine-tuning, for the body shape and clothing as well...

Anyway, until we get entirely reworked avatars, there is room for a lot of improvement *without* messing with the uv-map in a way that would render the existing clothing obsolete.
If this doesn't happen, well... I can still live with my "not too bad, considering" avatar :D

I looked at the demo video of the new RealXtend avatar maker. Despite the sophistication, I thought the demo avatars didn't look as good as SL ones.

Here 's my avatar improvements wishlist:

More realistic joint articulation at extreme angles.
More flexibility to spine/neck.
Non-phantom flexi prims so that hair can lie against skin instead of disappearing into it. (or alternatively, much better 'system' hair)
Better 'skirt' layer.
An additional 'overcoat' layer that can be adjusted to hang loose from chest downwards.
An extra skin / tattoo layer that includes head.

Also, tweaks for fatter avatars, including larger upper belly and the possibilty to let arms hang at an angle so they don't disappear into hips.

I second that list! I am not a 0 on the av shape scale, I am nicely shaped and I look like a woman instead of a 12 year old boy with huge tits. But my hands are always disappearing into my hips. It bugs me.
The tattoo layer is a big one for me. I wanna be able to wear my pubes, underwear, shorts, a leg tattoo, etc. without taking all my layers away. I want more layers damn it!
About joints, I dislocate my arm every night. Pretty soon, I am going to need an av surgeon to reattach my arm, after I rip it off.

One more addition to that wonderful list:
REAL FEET! Not feet that look like they are in wet socks and need a podiatrist!

I just tried RealXtend's newest version from viewer's avatar generation tool - and they have much work to do. At least their female avatar was ugliest "thing" what I have saw lately. But technically with inverse kinetics (no need for animations - you just tell for AV raise hand and it will raise naturally), possibility to import faces from Facegen and possibility to modify AV mesh more freely, they are going to win AV race. What they need to do is to find someone who have at least some artists skills and understanding that biggest entertaiment activity in virtual words is going to happen in virtual beds.

Hopefully Linden will realise that avatar is most important part of virtual world. They need to start working with a new avatar mesh, morphing and inverse kinetics systems - or outsource avatars for open community (which would be pretty bad, because soon everyone would use different meshes). Alternatively Linden is just going to be assets, certification and credits managements service for open source virtual worlds - which is going to end when big credit card companies and banks wake up to virtual reality worlds.

My RL crotch gets about 1/32 of what my SL crotch gets. It's a cryin' shame!

yes, why can't RL be more like SL?

Oh yeah, forgot about the lag inventory loss and shoes up the butt.. Nevemind.

Lag, rezzing, funky feet, and the lack of actual penetration would really suck! Just think tho, you could fall 800m and land on your feet!
