Only problem with redoing the avatar mess.. er mesh, is that it would require clothing designers to redo their work. But I'd think it worth the price to get a good mesh out of the deal.

The crotch is a problematic area for the avatar mesh. Depending on the skin you are wearing, it may look a little better, or a lot worse. Crotches tend to be problematic in RL too. In fact I'd say 80% of life's problems start in that area. ^.^ _____________________

I was wondering that, but maybe there'd be a workround that would automatically readjust clothes and skins correctly to an improved mesh. _____________________

It's his genie in a bottle. If you rub it something magical will happen. I saw him rubbing it himself once.. he seemed surprised to see me, but once he regained his composure he explained he was simply trying to cream his coffee. |

Keep in mind that while a change in avatar may require merchants to redo their work, it will also inspire a resident spending spree to upgrade their looks. An established merchant, with the skill and knowledge to quickly adapt, and the forsight to pay attention to LL announcements regarding avatar changes, might be poised to do some lucractive business at the time of the change. (Well, as lucrative as any SL business can be.) With anything new it takes weeks if not months before people are capable of producing quality content for it (just look at the first flexi hairs/skirts, or the first sculpty items, etc). The cost of starting over from scratch is going to be rather steep as well: at least one skin (I don't know too many people who stick to just one make-up so most likely several of them), new outfits, new shoes (there's no guarantee the current shoe base will be compatible, nor that shoes would still fit and they're all no-mod), new shape for those who don't want/can't make their own, etc and you're far past just a few L$k into the 5 figure range just to have a little bit of variety and in the beginning there just won't be enough offerings to not end up with the exact same things that everyone else has already. A new mesh might be an economic boost, but my guess would be that sales would drop off sharply and remain low until the selection matures enough which is something that just can't be rushed. |

Some might jump on the "oooo shiny new" bandwagon, but others might stop purchasing altogether for a while since the initial offerings will inevitably be poor quality and the selection will be extremely limited. At the same time buying anything for the old mesh would just seem like wasted money, you can make do with what you have already. With anything new it takes weeks if not months before people are capable of producing quality content for it (just look at the first flexi hairs/skirts, or the first sculpty items, etc). But I do think the best way to handle the transition would be to add the new set of meshes without eliminating the old. That way people could still wear all their old clothes while having a better choice when buying new ones. _____________________

Ahh you are a voice of reason there Kitty over this. If my current inventories worth of clothing becomes useless then there will be no way I will spend this amount again on clothing for SL.
If they keep the old mesh but designers only make for the new mesh then I guess I will stop buying more then too. For me the avs are good enough atm and whilst I do like my av to look good and people tell me my av looks great, I would gladly stick with what we have to retain compatability with the things that have been created already. I suppose an acceptable scenario for me would be that we have dual meshes and I stop buying clothes, I have a fantastic range already and do not really need more (though my shopping urges want to resist acknowledging that lol). Then people wanting the new stuff would still get it and those that didn't would stay or just create for the old still. However I bet the idea of lots and lots of people unwilling spend more on buying their inventory again might fill designers with dread but that would be just too bad. _____________________

The big problem as I see it is that your shape and skin will have to change when swapping meshes and it is unlikely you will get the same skin/shape for both meshes and so your look will alter quite significantly with changing your clothes - that would be the deal breaker for me on buying new clothes. Shapes could be approximated but it would still not be the same. ![]() _____________________

Oooh Gabriele, I can't believe I overlooked that point before. Must admit it's a good one. I still want new meshes though. ![]() _____________________

Ok, so who is the best mesh enabled avatar skin maker? This could rise in debate, but I wanna hear. See, I have thought about changing my "normal" skin (I have a few), but I noticed that the really good, expensive ones I have seen - the store only has a few choices. Which would mean, I am likely to be walking along, minding my own business, and see my doppleganger!

Hmm, maybe adding more layers is a good option, thought the damn sleevebumps are impossible to get rid of when not wearing sleeves.
I guess one of the newer worlds off the grid might have a go at improving it, is the avatar mesh something in the viewer or servers side too? _____________________

My 10 cents

I mentioned this to a Linden a long time ago.
They really must have been thinking Ken and Barbie. Why can they not simply upgrade the mesh? They seem to be able to upgrade everything else. It's not just pole dancing or SL sex either. Some clothes do not fit well around that area also, with weird texture stretching. |
