Does locking a thread without commenting prevent it from receiving a "bump"? That'd be good reason not to comment.

But on the flip side that also just add to the confusion. When I moderated I find it helpful at add comment WITH the bump. As not only will ppl see the reason (irrelevant if they agree or not at that point) but it puts the topic back at the top so everyone is clear on what happened to the topic. Without such you get people who dont know what happened to it or why its locked so they start up a new thread along the same lines or start a 'why is topic x locked' and it just gets messy.

Yes, voice of experience :)

It is, although on a site with the official stuff it's not used to blow sunshine up LL.

You missed my point however.

I modded on the official neverwinter nights2 forums for almost a yr. Just because they are 'official' forums does not mean it's any easier by default. Some 'official' forums are worse (flames, trolls, snarky ppl, etc) then loosely moderated fan sites. The nwn2 forums is such a example.

Not sure what point I missed? You simply said I should apply and I said it would be a waste of my time IMO due to my n00b status in SL. *shrugs*

My point was, if you don't like the moderation then you should try to do better yourself instead of carping. Smiles.

And actually, that's rather my point. NON official sites you'd expect to be snarky. This is the official Forum for SL, which exists purely by the grace of Linden.

Ciaran does, of course, speak the truth. There is no such thing as being thanked for being a mod. I don't think I make myself very clear to you Strauss, besides which you think I am a touchy drama queen (which is hysterical to people who know me, I'm sure).

Yanno, I fended off BS left right and centre in various BDSM related Forums and IRC channels, quite often with people who would then see me face to face RL. This place is not in the least "challenging" tho it is often filled with people moaning and grumbling. However it is a cakewalk compaired to most of the rest of the net.

To the "everything is pants" crowd I say, change things then. To the rest of us, it's a nice little resource or should be.

Nice truth! Some just don`t get the point their must be rules. Even the most uncivil social commities have some rank and order rules and regulations. To waht level of strenghth are those rules is not important. Point is for any good social structure rules need to be ther and applied when needed.

Phil, Strife is very aware of common courtesy that is normally applied in being a forum mod, but Strife has also been doing this all alone for too long and has held up extremely well given the circumstances. At the start of 2008 Strife will be taking a well deserved sabbatical so the lesson in formality is really unnecessary.
Far enough. I keep seeing people suggest that other people apply to be a mod, and I'd no idea whether or not Strife is a newish mod or an old hand at it. Newish mods may need a bit of guidance ;)

I've had my own forum for many years that is quite popular in its field, so I thought to offer a bit of guidance :)

And my point is give me the mod tag and I shall. *smile* However due to my n00b status in LL eyes I doubt it would be a productive endevour. Not sure why you have such a hard time grasping that concept, but none the less.

Actually I got thanked a FEW times on various forums and online mediums over the 2 decades I have been online, so I wouldnt say its a 'thankless job'. However the ratio is clearly in favor of getting a flame or arse clown remark then a 'thank you' post or PM.

Mods MUST have thick skin or they will become part of the problem rather then the soluation.

FYI, I don't know you and thus cant really form a opinion of you. I don't think your any more a 'touchy drama queen' as you are a 'arse clown' as you are a 'level headed debater', For the record.

Thanks Strife for doing the thankless job that you do...

My point is that I have no point! I'm just glad to be here! I like pie!

I am a mod down at a MMORPG called Ultimate Empire at War where I am the chief 3D modeler as well. And I have had to close threads and even temp. Ban a few colorful citizens...It doesn’t feel good to not be liked, I can relate Strife.
I did apologize to Strife both publicly and in private IM for being a little lewd (yeah I was just having a little fun doing so but should have known better) and he reasured me that it was not because of me that he closed the threads; it was for another reason... For the most part, this forum is down right tame compared to the vile mud slinging I have seen at other places. And there is nothing in the bylaws of this forum that states the moderator is required to give a reason for locking a thread. Strife was within his right and privilege to do what he did.

I have to admit we do tend to hijack the RA forum at times, and Strife DOES look the other way many many of those times... Thanks Strife for doing the thankless job that you do... (I really DO understand)

So don't pay them any money Chris. Doesn't change the reality of business practice in any organisation.

Beside which for everyone who pays money there are always ones who don't. Shrugs.

We're not going to ever agree on this point, tho I personally don't feel the need to drag it up constantly.

***edit*** Also, perhaps if people had not been so negative in the first place the General Discussions Forum would still exist where we could muck about and RA would function as it should. Just a thought.

LOL. I see you've been set straight by Brenda. I have a long memory in general, just remembering how thin skinned you thought I was that time.

AND if things were in my power to do anything, SL would be a utopia beyond even my fervid imagination. Shame being, it's not in my power. If it was in my power I'd look like my av too. LOL.

I always avoid General Discussion forums on web boards because of all the negativity and nonsense that so easily flourishes on them. While this group is fairly tame compared to other general forums I have seen, there is still more appropriate places for most of the off-topic topics or debates such as this very one.

To the others moaning about not having a General Disscussion forum here, if the rules of this forum can't be followed, why on earth would they give you another one?

Ah twas a magical time ...

Mainly, of course, everyone ended up on it during routine maintenance Wednesday. And had some fun.

You raise a valid point, and my concern here is that THIS Forum might also get withdrawn - and it is simply too useful for a fast answer to the little things that crop up in SL, especially for the newer members.

I'd say some more, but hey, it's asking to have what I have expressed taken, rewritten and ridden over roughshod ... and then reposted against my name.

On aforum , just like In the real word(or whatever ya wanna call this place my butt is sittin in)Someone will always bend, push and often break the rules.

Just a fact

In Real World we have police and such to deal with these things, but it still happens

In Forums there`s the Moderators, not exactly Police exactly, but somethin along those lines.

The probs here are from a Lack of Moderation, and before somebody blast`s me finish readin first please.

Strife does what Strife does To the best of his/her ability

But just like the police in Real Life...OUT GUNNED and OUTNUMBERED.

Biggest prob I can see here is that LL , don`t really care if the Forum run`s well or not, or they would give Strife a little more back-up.

Hundreds of posts a day just in the RA alone, and only one person tryin to keep an eye on it, for free even.

Though many do try to help, tryin to steer things back on course, pointing out little infraction`s of the rules so people don`t get themselves in trouble and whatnot.

At the end of the Day it still eaves only one to do the things that Have to be done, such as locks and moving threads.

It`s a damn tuff job to take on alone

I blame LL as much as the people that are tearin things up, LL built the playground, and now they leave one poor soul in charge of a hundred maniacs, with limited tools to fight back with.

Not sayin your all crazy, though I enjoy bein crazy myself ;)

Let me get this straight, Strife does this for free?!!!
I didn't know this. Wow, SL labs are cheap. Hope he at least gets a free Prem account and a gift at Christmas....

I personally don't think an explanation is mandatory, I just always love to see what he writes - his comments often make me laugh. As for the thread that was closed by accident, it was reopened.

Not sure how to break it to you but 99% of all forum mods are volunteer. Sometimes the company we work for sends us some freebies from time to time (free copy of newest s/w, t-shirt with company logo, E3 poster, etc) but over all its just a pride and satisfaction factor you are helping a company/community you believe in.

Are you blind? It's off-topic for the forum as stated in the second post. It got several on-topic responses and slipped from the main page (hence the lock without bump).

Wouldn't it have been possible to move the Gothic building thread to the right section rather than lock it? Or doesn't this forum setup allow that?
