Snip..

I do respect your point of you, though. The Primary reason for coming here should be to help others. Can't we do both? Help AND feel as if we are part of a community?

.

I don't feel picked on at all :)

I also understand the point you are making and take it on board. What I was referring to was Chris's comment implying that people should "make an effort" and find their niche here when the primary reason as you point out is to help each other here as residents. As customers of a product no one has the right to expect another to make an effort to fit in on this support board.

Yes its nice to FEEL part of a community, feel part of a team, banter with friends and others alike, but to EXPECT it on a support board? No.

people make WAY too huge a deal out of the clique business.

Heck the clique doesnt even agree with each other half the time, why in the heck do people think there is some united front to put down opposition.

Basically it works like this ..

If you have an opinion that is contrary to a lot of other peoples and you express it in a way that rubs people the wrong way - you are going to get unfavorable respones by those people.

Its not a gang mentality - just a lot of people disagreeing with you.

Those who express opinions that are contrary to what most people think but are respectful about it seem to gain far less backlash .. Than those who lump others into categories and hammer their opinions at people claiming they are merely "blunt"

I'm surprised people didn't pick this stuff up in Grade School.

Please stop calling me. When I said I'd get back to you, I meant it. I just haven't had enough time, (what with work and answering threads and all that).

If you can though, get a hold of Trout, I hear he's was looking for you.

QFT

I've had a few unpopular opinions that I've expressed and I haven't felt that I was being attacked or flamed. I stated my opinions respectfully and I feel like I made my point. I've seen others come in and spit bile and anger and then whine like babies when they get negative responses. Well, what the hell do you expect.

Two ways to state something:

"I'm concerned that the gambling ban in SL is written in a way that is difficult for people to understand and is so ambiguous that it is difficult to distinguish what is and is not allowed. Further, I think LL had a lot of options which would have allowed gaming to continue in SL to some extent and that they chose the most drastic measure because it was the easiest on them, despite it causing a lot of harm to a number of their customers."

"Jesus H Christstein on a Mutha%^&^% Ponygirl! I can't believe those idiots at LL took away my gambling! I'm from Costa Rica, not the Goddamn United States! You Americans are such assholes, taking away my rights to gamble in SL. Who do you think you are, and LL is taking away my rights, too. LL should have had the balls to stand up to the US government and protect me from them. I'm a paying customer, FFS. The SL economy will be RUINED. RUINED!!11eleventy111! I hate LL and I hate America for this. You all are stupid and illiterate for not agreeing with me."

Now - of the two posts, which is more likely to get angry responses and which is more likely to get respectful disagreement?

It does not take a community to answer questions though. It takes a poster. To imply that someone who may wish to take part in asking or answering questions has to find their "niche" is just plain wrong.

True, but how many would spend any real time here if it was a cut and dry Q and A place? I wouldn't. I like being entertained as well as informed here. Nobody forces me to read any thread I may not like. The solution is simple. Give a space for us all to kibbutz, stop with the whiny "The Last General Forum was so mean and nasty", Jesus Christ get a thicker skin. The lindens don't care about this forum , obvously, even closing it down would be at least some sign of interest. They made a big noise about recruiting new resmods, and what happened? Zero. Then Nika and Qie had talks with them about the forum. What did they get? More empty promises, it seems.

It's obvious that we, _as_a_community *that's not a dirty word* care more about the forum than they ever will as evidenced by these discussuions, which is sad since it is the home point for their product. But they've shown, collectively, they care less about their product than a lot of their customers do, and care even less about those customers. I know there are individual Lindens who do care, and try to do the right thing, but I fear they are seriously overwhelmed.

The forum rules have been set down by the Gods from Olympus, but it seems they have abandoned Olympus. Perhaps a second coming is needed.

*Ok, so I have to get Bread, and Cheetos. Anything else?*

SNIP..
Chris seemed to be addressing those professional outsiders who make no effort to join the community, then rail on and on about how it's a clique and people are unwelcome and how dare we enjoy ourselves, blah, blah, blah, which is total BS. If they make any effort to make friends here, they will. Having a community on a support forum is a benefit to the forums. The regulars all know each other and know their area of expertise. For example, if I see a question about scripting, I know that Qie and a few others are whizzes at scripting. If I see a land question and Raymond or Desmond have answered, then I know the problem is solved. If it's politics, then I know Chris has it all wrong. (I'm kidding). I know all the others as well, and I'm not excluding them by singling out a few names. I'm just saying that the community is a network of sorts that exists to help people who come here with questions, but as a secondary matter, exists also to enjoy SL and the group of friends we have here.

.

I have to agree with your very valid points, they make a lot of sense. I am sure that the niche Chris was referring to had nothing to do with those that script or know the ins and outs of land instead it came across as finding a personality niche and that is just plain wrong. I also agree that if your a regular poster in this forum you do get to know who can offer the best advice regarding certain subjects and thats a bonus not only for us as residents of Second Life but for Linden Labs themselves as I am sure the many, many people that get help here cuts down the SOS calls to them as a company.

I am still of the mind that people should not have to make an effort to join a so called community on this board, no one on this board purposely sought it out to make friends, find others who share the same interest. Its here as a by product and because we are customers we get to use it..(or abuse it.) Some users may use it for what it was intended and ask a few questions and they might..MIGHT feel a little left out of the "in jokes" or the banter of the regulars which does happen, usually after an original question has been answered I may add..but if they do feel left out and voice that they do that still does not make them wrong because in all honesty this board is not about a community, yes one has formed but thats down to how a particular person feels but its not expected, should not be demanded and certainly should not determine your standing on this board.

I do so understand what everyone is saying and I am not looking to cause trouble I am just saying it how I see it. If we were on an outside board I would have no issue to debate as to actively go and find such a board I would be looking for people with a like minded interest. But here its an official by product and is supplied hand in hand with what we are all paying for.

I was too busy trying to pick up Tara Simpson. What a little cutie...at least in third grade. I tried to impress her by hitting her, and when that didn't work, I jumped off the jungle gym wearing a homemade cape. Let me tell you something. First, homemade capes do NOT give you the ability to fly, despite what that little moron Mikey Hernandez tells you. Second, when you cry in front of a girl because you landed on your skull after jumping off the jungle gym in a homemade cape, she is NOT impressed. Especially because an hour ago you tried to impress her by punching her.

At any rate, I was thoroughly unsucessful at picking up anything in Grade School other than those facts listed above.

This is the thing, I don't disagree with what your saying, but for you and many others myself included being entertained here is just a bonus, its sort of "just happened". If some people voice their concerns that its a support board and they should not "have to fit in" then that is their right because it all boils down to the fact that this board was not intended to meet soul mates or even a best buddy.. To imply a user must make an effort to be able to join in is just plain wrong in my eyes given the intended use of this board.

Brenda thank you for your PM reply, and I have to agree with almost every point you made.

I knew the default position of many of the hangout were going into instant flame mode with this post, predicatble yet again. However as entertaining as thay all are, whats said is said and if people wish to take the ball and run with it; have a *gasp* mature discussion about it then my work is done.

Its clear that no matter what I say at this point certain folks are going to find some way, some reason to flame me even if I make solid, valid comments/points (which I feel the vast majoirty have been). Thus it's best if I move on to other topics at this point as my posts no matter the content will do nothing but give then fuel to turn a valid convo into a flamefest.

They are going to act the way they act and show their true colors as they gang me yet try to claim its not a mob action or clique in the same breath. *chuckles*

On a side note I ponder what the reactions would be from some of them if, with the same convictions, I was arguing for the hangout forums posts here... hhhmmm I have a feeling I'd be on most of their friends list being invited to their virtual BBQ at this point. *smirk*

Thank you again Brenda and everyone else who attempted to have a civil debate. Moving on...

I see what you're saying here and I don't disagree. Nobody should have to make an effort to join the community to enjoy the benefits of this forum. There are a lot of people who don't, in fact. We see new people come in all the time, ask a few questions and once their questions are answered, we never see them again. Their are a lot of people I've met at the hangout who say they are just lurkers and have learned a lot from these forums. Those people are all completely welcome here as far as I'm concerned.

snipped, because it's way toooo long.

So, you're correct. Nobody should have to be a member of the community here. Anybody is welcome to be, but they don't HAVE to be. Anyone is welcome to show up and post a question, and someone here will take a shot at answering it. Anyone who wants to is welcome to lurk and not post. But if someone makes no effort to join the community, then they have no right to complain about not being a member of the community.

Huh, a straight answer from you. I know I am still sickie, but /me is confused. -offers him some more "crap" dip to bring him back into the fold. "You have been a naughty boy, go to my room"

Huh bowling, shakes her head and looks at her USB port to see what she has plugged in there. Picks up her "Violet Wand" with a wicked smile on her face, wiggles her finger at him and says come here honey.
