Wow, I don't feel like such a geek answering after the already-posted answers.

6, in total.

3 desktops
2 laptops, including one mostly retired WinMe machine
1 revision A iMac, which I really need to plug in again. It has all my best fonts. :)

Oh, and a PDA.

2 desktops w/ 2 monitors each for hubby and I. Another 2 desktops set up upstairs for guests. 2 laptops, usually only used when traveling or when I must log in to work and don't want to log out of SL on the desktop.

Confesses to six, also.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that computers get outmoded pretty fast. Only three are what I'd consider at least halfway decent machines.

I have 2 pc's one working one not (but is good for parts) and a laptop
hubby has a PC and a laptop

boys share a PC

brother in law (who lives with us) has a PC

all are connected to the internet via cable (some wireless some hard wired)

and there have been times, that hubby's PC, hubby's laptop, brother in law's PC, kid's PC, my laptop and my PC are all on the net doing something at the same time, and none of us experience any lag other than the normal lag within whatever game we happen to be playing

I play SL and other various little games online, and offline.
Hubby once in awhile logs into SL, but he mainly plays age of Conan and just waiting for the new warhammer age of reckoning to be released, then he will switch
brother in law plays city of heros
boys generally play games on either lego.com or cartoon network (and sometimes something on bigfishgames.com (they like the penguin diner one heh)

Some of you guys go through computers like I go through shoes...... :p

I guess being single and not having kids is part of it, but I've owned 2 computers in my life, total . I bought my first one in 2000 and used it until the motherboard fried in early 04. I bought the machine I'm using now a couple of months later and hope to keep it one more year.

heh, I love this sort of question, cuz I can't answer it. You'd have to define computer. The way some people sell OEM licenses on eBay I have hundreds. :D Intact whole computer in the normal-people sense, I have zero. :o

3 desktops in house but 1 is my workhorse and is on it's 5th reincarnation in 3 years. Changed case (5 fans, 2 large, 3 small), changed power supply, had a 6600 onboard video which was upped to a 7900 and now an 8800GT. Changed mobo and went with AM+, then decided to change dvd to sata which I really liked so changed both hard drives to sata also. A computer is NEVER finished:)

Part of my area of exper-tease (notice spelling) at work is taking care of the IT and computers. BTW, ever notice how all of the guy engineers always have the secretary work on the copier because they can't figure it out?? Well it's like that except super-sized, I am Purchasing Manager but I do the troubleshooting, repair or even build new systems from the ground up. Amazing how people who have been using Autocad for over a decade still don't know crap about spam, viruses, firewalls, Antivirus programs or how to even setup thier email accounts. I live and die by 32 bit XP Pro (We have waaaay too many engineering/design programs that are not Vista versions) but it looks like I will end up building another system early next year to devote to Vista just so I can be prepared.

Know how moms collectively throw away their children's baseball cards? My mom threw away my old computers a long while ago in the same fashion. I would have liked to have been able to still play mid-90's era games on mid 90's hardware without needing DOSBox.

I have a bunch of 90's gaming peripherals and only two computers who are too young to know what serial connections even are, let alone actually have them.

To rub salt in the wounds, I still have original boxes, manuals, and 5.25 floppy disks for late 80's games but not the 286 I owned which they ran on. That machine would probably still be alive and well today if not for the arbitrary tossing of old hardware. That EGA monitor had character, too.

Needless to say, I'm still hanging on to my original NES and all it's games/peripherals like my life depends on it.

Currently functional: 3

one gaming/internet/design workstation (3ghz quad core, 4gb ram, dual nnvidia 8800's)

one work workstation that I only allow work related stuff on (dual 2.4 ghz xeons, 2gb ram, nvidia 7800). It's not nearly as fast as the other but it's solid as a rock. It's off most of the time and used as a single machine render farm the rest of the time, unless I have two work projects going simultaneously and then it's a secondary design station.

one media server (2ghz p4, nvidia 6 series of some sort, 1gb ram). Sometimes used as a shoutcast server, and it's my internet box when the other two machines are tied up rendering (which is usually 1-2 months out of the year).

Currently not functional in various states of disrepair (too outdated to bother with and just waiting to get hauled off to the dump): 5

Omg, you bunch of total geeks! Why am I hanging out on a forum with such a lot of total nerds? Blimey, the shame of it.

What was the question again?

Oh how many computers do I have? Hmm, let me think.

HP Laptop - using it now, my main baby - runs XP
HP tower pc - mostly used by my son now, but does help with big renders - runs XP
PB Laptop - my trusty blue baby, small and portable, bit old now but happy - runs XP
Ancient laptop - running Windows 95, still gets used by my son for a couple of games
Two PDAs - well, one, I have lost my HP wireless one, grrrrr - no idea where I put it
Nokia 95 8gb - my phone, how else can I check my SL account on the move etc?

Also have a PlayStation3, a PSP, a Nintendo DS (Pokemon rules!) and another mobile phone sharing my poor wireless network.

Oh, and my original ZX Spectrum 48k is in the hall cupboard :-)

Now, what was I saying at the start?

Oh

This is scary!!!!

There are currently 3 working (home built) desktop machines and another being rebuilt plus 2 old laptops in the study. 3 newer laptops generally in use. 1 laptop in the kitchen and another desktop in the kids room.

Well, I keep breaking them - I need back up!

[Actually - we refurbish them to give to schools, charities and youth associations.]

The definition of "PC" can be broad particularly today.

Actually running on my two networks at home: 2 Windows servers, 4 Windows desktops, 1 Windows Tablet PC laptop, 1 iMac, 1 MacBook, 1 MacBook Pro, 2 Linux-based NAS devices.

So that's 12 if you count NAS which run an operating system and act as servers and provide other services, but doesn't count games machines like the Xbox 360 or PS3 which have many PC-like media services or portable media devices or the mountain of non-NAS storage devices (about 6TB of various USB and eSATA variety) or the TiVo which also provides PC-like media services.

How many computers? Too darn many! A 3.4 GHz P4D self-built machine that is my main workstation, a Dell GX280 that I picked up on eBay cheap and souped up alot... it gets used for SL stuff and as my main data backup machine, an old HP Vectra that I use as a server to run my radio station, host my mp3's and a mirror of my website, a Dell Inspiron laptop that I use to run my backing tracks when I do RL gigs, an HP Kayak (dual P3's) that doesn't get much use, another old P3 machine gathering dust and an HP LH3 Netserver with dual 500mhz P3's. Xp Pro on all of them except the Netserver which runs Win2K Advanced Server. I have no real use for the Netserver so if anyone want to make me a sensible offer for it.... :D

I feel better.

Sometimes I feel like the house is getting taken over by boxy, silicon-based life forms. But you people have much heavier infestations than I do.

1 super old PC, 1 fairly old PC (about 5 years old, Dell), and a 2-3 year old Macbook (laptop). It sucks how much computers slow down after just a couple of years! Oh yeah, and 2 iPhones (1 is mine, 1 is husband's). iPhones definitely count as computers...it's amazing what they can do.

Just the 2,
1 laptop, just a cheapie but it does it's job as a back up or when i'm away. I was working in london for 6 months and living in a hotel and missing my pc.

and a pc it's about 5 years old now but still works well, although i'm not sure how much of it is still original.

Since you said family, flatmates and work don't count, that leaves me with one. if you count all of them that I own or have access to, but don't use exclusively, 5. 4 desktops and a laptop. But mine is the best :)

Just a HP laptop, a MotionComputing tablet, two desktops and linux server which is brand new. One current PDA and a completely functional Dell PDA that is simply too thick and heavy by today's standards to consider using.

One gaming desktop, one laptop, two older PCs networked in for extra storage space (kinda redundant now I've just got a second 500GB external backup drive), and one PDA. Oh, and the WAP on my phone :D

What an interesting read this thread has been. I had no idea so many people had so many computers at home, especially considering the OP's qualifier that family members'/roommates' machines don't count. I thought most people would have answered just one, but it seems to be more like an average of about three or so.

Myself, I have two that I use, my desktop and my laptop. I also have my old desktop, which my GF now uses. Technically it's mine, but I don't know if it should count since I don't really use it myself anymore.

Beyond that, I've got a closet full of old ones, probably half a dozen or so. That puts the total number of computers in the house at around 9 or 10. But again, only three are in use, and only two by me.
