Why do you add a signature?!

Who else thinks "signatures" at the bottom of posts are a little annoying? Are they really necessary? Why do YOU add a signature? I often keep on reading until I realize (duh) that the post is finished - that I'm now reading the signature ... Please take this in a poking kind of way - who knows, if this thread picks up, I might even add my own!!

I like signatures.

At the very least, they give you another clue as to who wrote the post.

At their best, they're witty, funny, or even profound.

I don't like them if they're too long, though. Sometimes a wordy signature is a lot longer than the post it follows.

Some are annoying - the really wide ones in particular - but I don't mind most..

You can turn them off in the User CP page for Options - http://forums.secondlife.com/profile.php?do=editoptions .

For you to see the signatures, you must have turned it on in your profile as the default hides sigs and avatars ;)

Signatures have been part of forums for years, I suppose they give more information about the poster and add to their overal personality profile.

Hmm... I did not know this (that you could turn it off) but unfortunately, I always feel like if I turn something off (chat/mini-map/and now signatures) I'll miss something interesting or profound LOL I guess I'm too curious. Deep down inside, I must enjoy them and not want to admit it hehe

It would be nice if there was a clearer built in divider between the end of the post and the start of the signature. One can add a line of equals signs or some such to deal with that, and a blank line before the body of the signature.

I basically enjoy seeing people's signatures, if they're pleasant or interesting and conform to the PG requirements that apply on the entire secondlife.com site, and they look fine to me if they are designed horizontally if they are graphics - think toolbar or banner ad rather than a tabloid.

People advertise there businesses in their signatures, or advertise links to useful info sites, or promote causes. Some folks promote ideologies, or try to, and others just put jokes.

Some folks advertise Second Life bug fix requests in their forums signatures.

Annoying animated effects in signatures get might old mighty fast.

On Usenet, a signature longer than four lines is considered very bad form. I've always been intrigued that little detail never made it across to WWW forums, like other forms of Usenet related good net etiquette.

I don't mind signatures. Here they usually are either witty or advertise the persons business. Either way it tells me a tiny bit about the person. I don't like the ones that have large graphics and prefer written ads to ones that are more like banner ads.

I like the smaller textual ones. I occasionally learn about interesting Jira issues via a sig (u know who u are!). And people with text siggies seem to change them now and again, which keeps me from turning them off.

But I have to say the graphical banner ones that go beyond the 580 pixel or so limit of the standard forum frame bug me to death. Particularly as they /never/ change. And even more particularly if they are very brightly colored. Drives me batty. They're visually disruptive and boring in the way that all repetitive advertising is boring.

These are all interesting answers, thank you kindly. When I think something fun to add, I will!
Or even, maybe, the last fun place I visited in SL. :)

I'm vain enough to believe my low-grade witticisms are worthy of a wider audience.

I just recently figure out how to turn them on.
If they really annoyed me I guess I could turn them off.
For myself I like putting art images that I recently made as way
to show off what I have drawn, etc but I think most people have this
option off or don't notice.
I rarely do any of my designs or creations for profit.
All my business are fictional and don't make a linden.
I do it for myself I guess in hopes maybe some body else might
notice something beautiful I have created....but its okay
if no one notices or doesn't like it.

I said sarcasm was allowed. Besides, the word twat has been used so I think we are ending early.

I don't mind them. I have the animations turned off though. What amusues me are the people who post their computer specs in their signatures, sort of a "Mine is bigger than Yours" thing I guess.

LOL Kelli May! And love your sig FD Spark! Personally, having rethought this, I guess the only ones that really bug me are the ones that advertise ($$$)

because I like to share... and be helpful

huge sig pics (enough to stretch the posts vertical space, or more than a few lines worth of horizontal, are really annoying to me... I think I'm actually going to remove my smoking clause from my sig. adds not much

I usually ignore the ones that are more than 3 or 4 lines and especially the one with ads or large or multiple images.
