The Pessimism Meme.

People's levels of mis-trust of anything working out, right, these days, is very pessimistic for very good reasons. Alien Invasions, Invisible madmen, a Time Machine's visit to a future of sheep eaten by Morlocs, Mad scientists, creating zombies.....Horrible virtual battles. Rip off artists.

All the stuff we see in Video games, movies and TV today. And the news, forget the news.

Isn't almost everything viewed pessimistically all over the world?

I come back from a forum hiatus and the first thread I see is another tired "The sky is falling" thread. I think I'll continue my hiatus for a few more days.

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and
snakes, an aeroplane and Lenny Bruce is not afraid.
Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn - world
serves its own needs, dummy serve your own needs. Feed
it off an aux speak, grunt, no, strength, the Ladder
start to clatter with fear fight down height. Wire
in a fire, representing seven games, and a government
for hire at a combat site. Left of west and coming in
a hurry with the furys breathing down your neck. Team
by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered cropped.
Look at that low playing. Fine, then. Uh oh,
overflow, population, common food, but it'll do to Save
yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs,
listen to your heart bleed dummy with the rapture and
the revered and the right, right. You vitriolic,
patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty
psyched.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign
towers. Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself
churn. Lock it in, uniforming, book burning, blood
letting. Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate.
Light a candle, light a motive. Step down, step down.
Watch your heel crush, crushed, uh-oh, this means no
fear cavalier. Renegade steer clear! A tournament,
tournament, a tournament of lies. Offer me solutions,
offer me alternatives and I decline.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

The other night I dreamt of knives, continental
drift divide. Mountains sit in a line, Leonard
Bernstein. Leonid Brezhnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester
Bangs. Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom! You
symbiotic, patriotic, slam bug net, right? Right.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel
fine...fine...

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
Ill never look into your eyes...again

Can you picture what will be
So limitless and free
Desperately in need...of some...strangers hand
In a...desperate land

Lost in a roman...wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane
All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah

Theres danger on the edge of town
Ride the kings highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
Ride the highway west, baby

The west is the best
The west is the best
Get here, and well do the rest

The blue bus is callin us
The blue bus is callin us
Driver, where you taken us
Cmon baby, take a chance with us
Cmon baby, take a chance with us
Cmon baby, take a chance with us
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin a blue rock
On a blue bus
Doin a blue rock
Cmon, yeah

Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

It hurts to set you free
But youll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die

This is the end

The Doors...slightly edited

Now This way to The Great Egress and leave your stuff at my feet ;)

Sunny day - Sweepin’ the clouds away,
On my way to where the air is sweet.
Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street.

Come and play, everything’s A-OK
Friendly neighbors there that’s where we meet
Can you tell me how to get
How to get to Sesame Street

It’s a magic carpet ride. Every door will open wide.
Happy people like you. Happy people who.

Like a beautiful sunny day sweepin’ the clouds away
On my way to where the air is sweet
Can you tell me how to get,
How to get to Sesame street, how to get to Sesame Street, How to get to . . .

Just as long as LL doesn't do anything rash like reinstate direct teleports and destroy the real estate market, the SL economy should be fine. But if they mess with the telehubs, we're doomed. Doomed!

The Pessimism Meme.

Hur hur she said meme .. hur hur

Exactly. Apart from anything people often look forward to SL exploding because it justifies their action/inaction/using SL purely to try to get chicks/using RA to try to get chicks/being a miserable ... person ...

I predict that more new blood will keep coming in. Some will stay and swell the numbers. Some will stay and bring something productive and useful to SL, which keeps innovating thanks to the people who make the content (i.e. US). Some will be a waste of bandwidth.

Some present will leave. I don't want their stuff, my inventory is already killing me.

***edit*** ironically if they reinstated telehubs the argument about banlines would have some actual relevance :)

Press release:

To finally get things clear for users who predict SL is going down since 2003, Linden Lab(s) decided to provide some valuable information:

*********************************************

First of all our apologies we could not warn you in front, but the grid is closing down at 23-1-2008. And not coming up anymore. We at Linden Lab(s) are too fed up by complaints, made more then enough money to relax at a RL beach resort, so the hell with it. Get your stuff out today, as tomorrow the sky will fall. No more banging on things. We can't promise not to bang anymore, but at least it won't be on things. We will do one more tier round though this afternoon, so if you want to sell your land, be quick.

Regards, Marcel Linden

that something not good will happen to SL.
i see the signs already.
lots of shops closing up and disappearing.
camping and camping payout prices decreased while the sit time increased.
people owning land thats being sold/abandoned.
users reverting back to free from premium.
private estate sims closing up.
camping/land bots dominating SL for profit.
increased costs to own/operate on SL.
havent seen much serious griefing lately though.
so what do you think ?
opinions please...

Overall thats a good observation, personally i said that overall economy will shrink when gambling was banned but i was first hated by casino haters, then others told me i had no idea about the synthetic economy of sl it only took afew months for my prediction to come true.

Recently as banking got banned, that should not have a such effect on the economy as gambling had, but theres something else, the RL economy, due to the current earthquakes in US real estate, banking/insurance is collapsing wich brings with it a deflation spiral, this means we'll face a serious reduction in purchasing power. So despite how marvelous LL will do in SL the RL economy will make sure we will have a long term recession in SL also. Once the deflation effects kick in badly, the FED will contiuasly lower interrest rates and refill the market with billions of USD's wich will ultimately destroy the currency because it will fail to attract capital goods investment. This effect will bring EUzone with it, and asia at same time.

But ofcourse i'm not supposed to say that because

A: it is unpopular
B: because Bush says "economy is strong"

Bottomline: none of this would happen if we werent fooled to believe that the 20th century idiot John Maynard Keynes was a genious, his economical theory is the reason why our RL economists always fail.

Whoo hoo! At least two people got the reference!

(So we've had threads called "I Predict" and "Stand And Deliver" -- can "You Spin Me Round" or "I Want Candy" be dat far behind?)

Are we all dying again? Bugger!!

The fact that all these places are closing is, possibly, the reason business is getting better for us that are staying for the long haul.

I've had my main store in the same location for over a year now and, unless something unforseen happens in RL, it'll be in exactly the same place for a few more years to come.

Places close a lot in SL, and always have.

I think Butch makes a good point here. Those who hang in there and continue to run their businesses in a steady, reliable way benefit just by the fact that the longer you do that, the better known you become, and the better your reputation.

I think this is true no matter what the size of your store, or what you are selling.

But I don't think location has much to do with it; you can move now and then, and people will still find you. Me, I've never moved either. At the northeast corner of my lot is the same little 512 I started out with! (And gradually expanded from.)

Anyway, places close all the time, but a better gauge is probably the number of stores that have been here for years, still putting out new products, still giving customer service, etc. Now when all of those start closing, then you better worry.

Really, it's kind of phenomenal when you look at those (and I can easily think of at least a dozen offhand that I like to shop at), considering the whole thing is nothing but PIXELS in an online game! hehe
