I did try out being a guy for a very short while but spent most of my time playing with that funny 'money pouch' slider or whatever it's called. :-)

And I couldn't get used to those big feet. Kept walking into things and tripping people up. Most embarrassing.

Ok, I just have a couple questions about something that probably isnt such a big deal to some of you. I have a male alt that I use for modeling purposes, since I create clothes. Its MUCH easier to use myself than to hire someone to model my clothes..anyway..
I have him looking pretty hot, to me...he's pretty much the man Id like to meet, well looks, anyway, since he has no personality, SOOO....i went out as him the other night, just to see what it would be like. Right away...I noticed how different people treated me.
Ok, Im sure they didnt know I was female, at least I think. But I noticed, that I was ignored by most, so IM assuming its lonely being a guy unless you speak first!
Otherwise I got hit on by girls and was shocked to see how girls talk! Maybe Im old fashioned but Id never say those things to a strange guy!
So my question is, have you ever been the opposite sex here in SL, since its relatively a "normal" thing, and were you treated differently? And did you ACT differently?

I know I did, I found myself saying things I usually dont say, like..hey dude..lol..

I think if I ever tried to play a male avatar everyone would think I was gay....

I'm not hit on much as female. Others are better to judge if I'm attractive enough.

It is funny though that people I speak with and observe, the more attrractive their avatar the less likely they will be asked to dance asked for sex or whatever..

Strange huh? Maybe the men on SL actually like normal looking women huh?

Frankly I dont care how you look, its the personality behind it that matters to me... I am not attracted frankly to the bad boy black leather tattoded freak shows that seem to be abundant on SL.. I like nice clean cut avatars.. kinda husky and manly... love beards... (like rl)
So I would not look twice at an avatar that is all bad boyed up with the chains and tats and stuff... One tat you find discovering is better than 100 exposed for everyone to see.. anyway./////

I think you have a point though, perhaps they are. :o

I have a female alt, created for testing & setting up animations (of course!) Like Yum, I made her look attractive to me. I don't take her out much, usually only when my SLGF wants me to drag her out to a party or girls' club.

Evidently I'm not the only one who thinks she looks hot. She gets hit on a lot, by both male and female avs.

My usual av (not Lear Cale, who is all freebies) is male and looks good thanks to my SLGF's shopping abilities. While I do get unsolicited advances from time to time, it's nothing like when I'm out as the female av. On the other hand, I'm not treated rudely or anything like that, and I don't find a big difference in overall friendliness. Perhaps it helps that my av doesn't look intimidating.

In general, men are expected to take the lead. The pressure is on us to amuse the ladies or else be ignored. The hardest part being male (no pun intended) on the prowl is reading the clues and switching gears at the right time. In RL, we usually get pretty clear body language clues. In SL, people have to chat these clues. When it's not obvious, we're left guessing whether this lack of clues is a signal or not. (Many of you may be surprised how often it's not a signal.)

Note that I said "in general". It's far from universal! But, in general, men have to take the lead.

I made a female alt to test some panties and shapes I made, and let me tell you, no matter how remote a place you find to stand around naked (or half-naked) as a chick, within a few minutes a guy will be standing right up behind you and just say, "hi." As I have said before, all guys should be required to do this exercise in order to gain perspective on how creepy we can be.

When it comes to Briana I know I am. I've seen her around a few times, seen her post on here often enough... And have to admit she's quite eye catching.

She also intimidates the hell out of me, which is why flame haired and appealing as she looks, I stay well away.

I've been approached maybe four or five times in my year+ in SL, and being the shy type I'm not so good at doing the approaching. I imagine my profile doesn't help, but I like to be honest ;)

My female friends get hit on constantly though, regardless of their profiles, so as I always suspected, if you have breasts you're much more likely to have attention too.

Not in my experience... My sweetheart and I both have avatars who look more 'realistic' than the avarage SL avie; neither of us are unattractive, but we don't fit the usual Barbie/Ken SL models. Whether for this or some other reason, we find ourselves pretty much invisible wherever we go. Since neither of us are in SL to get hit on, that works just fine for us. :)

The exceptions, for me, have been the seemingly less gender-oriented groups, such as tinies or kids or dragons/critters. Among these groups I felt very welcomed regardless of what avatar I was wearing at the time.

And to all of the below... thank you for the giggles!!! :D

Yes, women are THE worst when it comes to nasty talk like that *bats eyelashes*, but that's just because we're better at it :p I think I've said before, but just like the OP I did the "take yer male alt out for a test drive" thing. Pretty much the same result as what Yummy says other than I didn't get hit on. Was all peace, quiet, and tranquility until I got called a fag for dancing too close (as in like 10m) to another guy. I believe that event fostered a forum question from me about "guys personal bubbles" and why they're apparently so large. I've come to assume that guys in that situation are like certain species of mating birds.. the males who fluff and display to attract a mate into their own territory, and perceived competition is driven out with aggression and prejudice lol.
Men... *rollz eyez*

I have a male alt too, created very recently. It's a quiet but also lonely world being him. If I don't chat up to someone I am simply being ignored. I wonder if this is the way the world looks like if you are male in RL.

I have a female alt, but people rarely speak to her when I let her wander freely. Thank god for that. On the few occasions that someone try to strike up a conversation I just stare at them having no clue how to proceed.. So I put a mask on her. Maybe that explains the silence for them. *cough*

This is where the joke about "why do women want to make do with mere equality?" comes from. :(

I'm male in RL, and I have been VERY curious about this, and wondered if others do the same, but even more curious how the opposite sex in RL, see the world as a male avatar. I think Yummi observed things very accurately.

My experience, as a female avatar, I immediately noticed the attention females get from men, I also noticed the world seemed a nicer place, more friendly, more clothes, more options, girls seem more open to chat, I could talk about things that are denied in the male world like 'feelings', and 'love'. I did have the Occasional jealous female call me names in chat which I won't repeat here, lol. In all I noticed how 'free' I felt as a female, I know most won't agree with this, but this is what I experienced, and being male in RL I noticed these changes immediately.

The male world is lonely at times, my male avatar is usually only contacted by others if they need something for free, or need help with something such as fixing things, women rarely chat to me, although some do, and some chat for 5 minutes then ask me, "I know it's a big favour to ask, but can you lend me L$800, I'll pay you back friday", most girls are friendly though to be fair, but like Yummi said, men usually have to ask, and being naturally shy, it's a cold lonely world for a man, some of us do have those things called 'feelings' too, lol.

Very interesting subject though.

It's interesting that you say you feel more free as a female, I can see how that would be so in SL, as you say, there are more clothes, etc. I really felt lonely as a male alt. I never thought about how men react to things until I took a male form in SL. It didnt seem right for me to say the same things to other people as a male, such as Oh, Im sorry sweety, or just typical conversation that I use as a female. You are right, tho, IMO, men arent as free to express their feelings openly like women, or it seems that way.

Sad, isnt it? I guess I will never complain about being a woman again. I have to say, I feel very sorry for the men now. It is a lonely world!! And I also wonder the same, is the real world this lonely for men?

When I first set up my account with SL, I thought "Cooool, I can be a guy." and I erroneously thought that SL would be like RL, where the guys ran the world and held the power. 3 weeks later, I ditched that idea as I discovered that it's tough being a guy. I started over.

I found that as a guy, especially a n00b guy, I was never approached. I had to initiate all conversations, and everyone assumed I was there for sex as soon as I started talking.

As a female, a whole new world opened up. I can walk through a mall, and total strangers will stop and talk to me. Guys talk to me (and they don't all want sex). Girls talk to me. Kids talk to me. Furries, anthros, etc ... you get the idea.

So yes, when I log in as the male avatar, it's a completely different experience.

I've done quite a few informal experiments and found that the colour of your skin, the ugliness of your avatar and the tone of your profile make *much* more of a difference than your gender.

Pep (But you wouldn't want to hear that, would you?)

Well, I did that experiment too, I have a caucasian av, an african american av, an oriental av..all female, though, and none of them get treated any different, IMO. They all still get talked to, even the shorter oriental av who almost is small enough to be a child. But being male, was way different than any color of skin.

Interesting! Maybe thats why men DO have all the power and run the world in rl, because if they didnt, they'd be alone! Its like the jokes Ive heard from comedians, that men only get women if they have nice cars, money, etc..its like a peacock's feathers used to attract a mate. But what about just having friends, it must be harder to make friends as a male, Im assuming :) women are so much more open, I can start a conversation with a woman just asking about clothing, or hair, but do men do that to each other?

LOL!! seriously? It shouldnt be that way, though. Men should be able to talk freely and not have a sexual orientation put on them. It doesnt seem right.
