The profile discription does not even mean a thing, I met plenty of people that have notecards with profile discriptions matching their mood, it's a bit extra work but profiles can be changed just as avatars can.
Take a look at my profile. I kinda cheated. I have my multiple characters in my Picks tab. It's worked out rather well for me. (^_^)y

Does the profile description indicate a strictly child avatar? Does it indicate variation? Or is it more generic?

While some people treat their avatar as a single personality, others change their av frequently or have several fixed shapes and sizes that they choose depending on their mood. So if a profile clearly defines the avatar as a child only, then no, it's not appropriate to be in such groups (though I also don't think it counts as a rules violation). But if the profile is either silent on the subject or indicates multiple shapes or ages, then it's fine.

While it may not be against the TOS or whatever to switch between Little Orphan Annie and Dale Ardor avatars with the same profile, it certainly seems that having seperate accounts would be the prudent thing to do.
