I hate people copying my stuff so much in SL why would I use these systems that copy SL? They are based on the idea that IP theft is OK and it is better to copy than do something original. And there is not a chance in hell that I would ever trust them with my information or money. copy sl? because sl client is open source project now and some developers want to do better client . Cant imagine how must look new original client. Lindens make some great things in virtual world but have many things to do better.BTW no one of all this new project don't have curency yet. |

If you have an old computer, try SL on an up-to-date one - the difference is amazing. If you want SL clones, based on LL open source, a sort of 'SL beyond LL', then try Open Life or Central Grid - but they are in early stages and experience similar problems to SL If you want to make your own private fantasy land, you can download an Open Life Standalone sim (or sims) to your own comp. It's a lonely place as no friends can visit it but for building etc. it's fun and it's free. You can even recreate a replica of your SL avatar, but that involves copyng down all the slider values from appearance mode and re-entering them. I did that, it works. But you can't have any attachments yet I enjoy going to my 2 sim standalone island, Wootonia, but at heart I'm a Second Life loyalist and a keen supporter of Linden Lab and I expect to stay that way. Actually I have a quad-core processor and 3 gigs of RAM. When the grid is running right I'm getting 20 to 30 fps and that will get better when I get a good video card. I think LL should let us download more of the game to our hard drives. If most of the game is running locally it would be faster, more stable and less of a drain on their servers. I have a fast connection. Downloading 500mb is a breeze. |

The problem with more cache
04-05-2008 08:16
In the days of 300GB hard drives, having a 1 GB max disk cache does waste a lot of bandwidth. Once your cache fills up, old stuff starts being dumped. So if you travel around SL a lot, you get to download a new place you visit, which forces the one you visited 6 teleports ago out of your cache. Then you visit that old place again, and you get to download it AGAIN. Only if you stay within a limited set of locations does the cache really save much bandwidth.
The problem with upping the cache limit to many GB, is second life uses a low reliability transport (UDP) to deliver stuff to your PC, and I suspect corrupt data is a major cause of crashes with the client software. Thats why clearing the cache helps sometimes, it clears out the corrupt data. IF they had a more reliable way to deliver the data, then a large cache might be helpful, as might a downloadable/delivered on disk set of "popular stuff". This would be textures, animations, sounds, etc. that get used most often in SL. It would make sense to preload that stuff on your PC, so you dont have to wait for it to download in real time. |

Will Open sim???
04-05-2008 08:23
I am connected to my wife's machine with a router and we can connect fully with each other's machine. Would open sim let us play on our own home sim together, or would we still be alone on each of our own machines??
Just asking for fun. I am still a Fan of SL. I can't find anything else as far along as SL is. I like the friends I have made here, and I love the building and scripting part of SL. But damn they have to learn to fix the current issues before creating even more bug with new features. _____________________

Just a follow up on There.com. If you're used to SL, forget it. I thought it would be fun for a while until SL gets more stable, but the interface is so non-intuitive I can barely move or find anything. Bleh!

*laughs his ass off*
To those thinking about moving to There or IMVU: this is like complaining about Bill Clinton and ending up with Bush. Sorry but There and IMVU are the worst things you could try. Both are from the same developer and both are terrible. LL are like gods compared to those sites, seriously. |

I know there is a lot of the game that doesn't change much. The client could look for updates at start up. All the things that don't change could be local. I have a 500gb Hd and nothing much to do with it all. |

Here's a really old one that always seemed very clunky and kinda low-rent but does have a slew of options to modify your own space/avatar as well as the ability to upload your own 3d models.
http://www.moove.com/ Want super old-school? Here's the very first VRML world I ever visited, way the hell back in like 2002: http://www.cybertown.com/main_nsframes.html Dinosaurs to be sure, but amusing for historians and people who just like to snicker at other virtual worlds. _____________________

Tried WoW, got bored with the clip on outfits, went right back to City Of Heroes and their costume creator. I'm such a clothes horse! (Although here, I'm more of a hair whore...)
