From: Love Hastings It's not completely beyond the realm of possibility that this thread might have gone off topic... slightly. Well not entirely... some are ignorant about the codes used, some are not. So it is about ignorance... though it could be discussed whether it is virtual or not The smartest people though, probably could not care less and completely ignore this thread. Which, on it's own, is a form of ignorance. Mzzz time for a Strohrum-coke

From: Marcel Flatley Well done too Did you manage the Base64 as well? With that we must have had them all I guess... Yes, though I actually had to google a translator since I did not have one of those already bookmarked.

I have found that usually the more ignorant one is, the more assumptions they make or is that 'the more arrogant one is'? or both?

From: Kaimi Kyomoon I think you are quite right. Lots of practice can be more important than high intelligence when it comes to doing things well. And being smart doesn't necessarily mean caring about others. And smart people can be just as blinded as anyone by emotion.
But once they put their mind to figuring out how to do well at something being smarter probably helps. Ya I agree. It does. Is no worth in being dumb by choice really. Is a bit like when an unhappy poor person is asked if they want to be rich or poor. And they choose to stay poor. Being rich maybe not make them happy but at least they in a better position to look after themselves.

From: LittleMe Jewell I have found that usually the more ignorant one is, the more assumptions they make ... =) Is certainly true. We go on what we know ya. If we dont know then we dont know. This also leads to triteness. As I just said already. Ignorance is bliss really. Cliches are even better. Look I sounding more intelligent as I go. At least to the ignorant. Or am I just being arrogant when I say this. But maybe I only appear arrogant only to an ignorant person who just assumes I am arrogant when Im not really and just assumptive or so I assume. Or maybe to an arrogant person I just a tryhard or just dumb or both. But what would they know about anything anyways. arg !!! lol !!! I better stop now. I doing my head in making all these assumptions. I like bliss better =)

I've been thinking about that "lost in translation" thing and how some people misinterpret what others are saying or read things that were never said.
I think that communication does have a lot to do with voice inflections and expression, or body language if you will. On forums people add certain inflections by adding an icon. BUT, even an icon can be meaningless as in certain parts of the world a wink means kidding but to others it means "you're cute". A wink to me means you're cute, but not I'm kidding.
And you don't seriously think I was offended by Candida Flare's name, do you? To me, I assumed it was a joke name in a thread about monogamy and when I said I found it offensive I was kidding. Why would that even be offensive? That is such subtle humor. However, if I had put a wink, most of the world would have known I was joking, I think? On most forums I usually write it out if I'm joking like this /joking... but I forgot to put that, thus people jumped to the wrong conclusion because an icon was missing and/or the word written out /joking.
However, some people on this forum need a serious shot of "it's easy to be nice".
But back to the lost in translation thing, I notice this board is full of a lot of sarcasm and trying to express yourself with sarcasm can come across all wrong to peoples from other countries. I'm not used to communicating with sarcasm, but the posts on this board are full of it. I'd rather hear what someone has to say in a nice tone. To me sarcasm is mostly mean and rude and there are better ways to communicate.

Three thoughts:
Common sense is an uncommon thing.
When we assume, we make an ass of u and me.
"I'm just a man whose intentions are good. Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood."

From: Avawyn Muircastle Nope. If you were only joking, you should have said so in the orginal post, but since you "forgot" to do that, you had ample opportunity to correct the mistake when you were called out on it - but you didn't. This thread is about assumptions, and I've made mine.

From: Avawyn Muircastle No, my first thought was I thought HoneyBear was joking, and then that thread got all out of control over nonsense. Ok, but you posted a number of times. All it would have taken was a "it was a joke" statement in one of those posts, but there was no such statement. Remember, we've seen you do it before - claiming you meant something a bit different to what you wrote, but not claiming it until many posts down the line. In that case, you only claimed it after someone else brought up the idea of the extra - it wasn't even you. I maintain my assuption, which may or may not be correct. [added] Btw, if Honeybear gets on someone's back about something, you can be reasonably sure that the someone did something wrong, because it's not something that she does in the forum.

It is valid to make assumptions based on behavior that is repeated over and over.

Thanks, Phil. This is a fact, and I typically only do it when I either see someone being utterly rude or beating on an underdog whose position I absolutely believe in.

From: Avawyn Muircastle No, my first thought was I thought HoneyBear was joking, and then that thread got all out of control over nonsense. No, I wasn't joking because YOU weren't. You intentionally challenged someone (quite incorrectly) on their choice of name. I don't care if someone named themselves BigHairyDick or Gonorrhea, it's not your job to censure them. That's the job of LL and unless you want to add "Linden Lab employee" to your considerable resume, you have no right to challenge them in the forum. The TOS specifically states "broadly offensive" and since nobody else was offended, your spouting of TOS was just as stupid and lame as the rest of the comments, questions and concerns we've seen lately. I'm now backing away from this before yet another thread gets locked over this crap.

when it comes down to communication we are all ignorant and assumptive. yes virginia, even me. That's not a given. Define "right assumption". Is it the most logical assumption based on known facts and prior experience, or simply the one that turns out to be correct, once all relevant facts are known? "Wrong assumption"? Until ALL relevant facts are known, it is often only what is currently assumed to be incorrect anyway. Often by those in the majority. Often all equally ignorant. And "facts" are often assumptions as confused by the ignorant, who they think know all the relevant facts, but don't. At least that's my going assumption, right or wrong. But what do I know?

From: Snow Gretzky Three thoughts: ...
When we assume, we make an ass of u and me.... One thought: That phrase is a wonderfully trite phrase (not directed to this poster - it is altogether too common to pick on one person) for the many people that have no idea how much of life is more assumption than knowledge. Every social interaction is rife with assumptions. The smarter people are the ones that realize this. The stupidest comment I can imagine is when someone says they know someone else. This is a fact that can be verified with any married man buying a Xmas gift for his wife and his cell phone battery has gone dead and he finds himself on his own. Completely. Certainty gives way to uncertainty and fear...
