I know there are 2 threads about the RC7, but I think this particular feature of it is good in its own thread, in case it gets missed in the other threads.

The Places tab now returns the results from the Google search appliance, and the traffic rankings are gone.

In the meeting that I attended, I pushed for either the Places tab to be removed, or for it to return results from the Google appliance. We were told that the tab would have a shiny new html page when you open it (landing page), but that nothing else would change. It seems they've changed their minds.

It means that, when the RC viewer becomes the standard viewer, there will be no further use for traffic bots or for traffic camping.

Get ready for a population drop, or maybe not as allthe traffic & camping bots get sold to spambot runners.

OMG thats correct! this is unreal! No more traffic! might not end bots but you no longer see skyboxes or bottom of the sea full of bots ever again.

This is good to hear. I'm waiting to see how it will actually work before I decide.

I can't imagine people keeping their traffic bots when it's the standard viewer. Mine will go for sure, and I'll be able to turn my laptop off for a change :) Most camping is sure to disappear as well.

Indeed most that will still have it will be giving decent pay for it... as a way of helping the newbies.. possibly reworking the scripts to limit it to under 60 days in game. (yes 60 not 30)

It'd be good to see that happen.

So... What's the replacement method? Will search results be in alphabetic order now? (o.o)

No. They are the results from the Google search appliance - same as in the new All search. Rankings are based on proper ranking factors.

Of course it's an improvement - a huge improvement. It's a proper search system that ranks on relevancy.

I doubt that many people do that, and the places *do* need to be relevant to the searchterm - unlike the traffic rankings.

When people place profile camping in their profiles shop owners are not wasting their money . Believe what you will but frankly speaking its going to be much better then money tree traffic ...........

Wrong. Already there are a lot of places I know of, even though I haven't even been looking for them (because I think of picks as recommendations - and I don't give those for payment). But they've been around for quite a while now, some paying up to 200 L$ per month for a spot in your picks. Wait until this goes live. Then people will have lots of money to give away they'd have spent on camping chairs otherwise...

Wait, you mean we'll have a realistic concurrency? And maybe the asset server might not die as often under the weight of all the bots and such? People will actually have to provide a good service/product to get their things in search?

Where's the downside again?

(Yes, I just finally got fully woke up. Yay caffeine!)

This is just EXCELLENT ! As much as I've carped before about the, well, "synthetic" nature of IBLs in SL's use of the Google Search Appliance, such niceties can easily be overlooked for the GLORIOUS DAWN OF TRAFFIC-FREE SEARCH RANKINGS! (Well, almost. Near enough for a celebration, anyway, because it's the end of anybody but a fool using trafficbots or camping-for-traffic.)

Now the challenge will be to find new and creative ways to expoit^H^H^H^H^H leverage the hunger of newbies for small amounts of L$s. Seriously. There's margin to be made here, if we can just figure out how.

Yes, there are plenty of places doing it, but it'll cost them a fortune to compete with places that have real 'votes' Picks pointing to them. If they don't sell things that enough people want to buy, then they are limited as to how much they can spend on Picks. If places sell things that enough people want to buy, they don't need to pay for Picks.

And take a look at Showcase. The Lindens feel that H and R Block island is an attraction. Along with the weather channel and the very old Reuters island. No real content. And no tab in SHowcase that would allow clubs to be showcased.
