What's funny is that I never used to be as outgoing and goofy as my avie is. I was more conscious of looking in control of myself and whatnot even though I have always had a really weird and great sense of humor. But through SL, I have actually changed in RL instead of the other way around, and now I am a lot more wacko in RL than ever.
Other than that, there is the fact that my avie's facial features are more Eurasian whereas I am German and Ukrainian and so don't look exactly like her feature-wise, although dimensions are fairly accurate (she's got bigger boobs and a more outrageously illegal butt than I would dare flaunt). Our hair and eye color are the same, approximate porportion (height and weight), etc. are similar. And her ways are the same as mine. She is giving and self sacrificing and tends to fall in love with everybody in one way or another, so we have the same dilemnas in life too. It would be hard to completely eliminate myself from her makeup, and tiring...

I'm me - or Trout is me. What you see is what you get. Obviously, he doesn't look like me, but that's about it. The only time I play a role is in specific, obvious role-playing situations - like I'm in Deadwood, dressed like a Native American, or I'm a dragon in Avilion or something like that, but even then, I think I'm still pretty much me, at least in terms of my sense of humor and personality. That means my RP wanders off in bizarre directions, and has such bad ADD that it just can't stay on track at all.
If you see me anywhere other than an obvious RP situation, I'm exactly like I am in RL, but way better looking and posessed of the ability to defy the laws of physics.

I am me, quirks and all. My foot is in my mouth just as much in SL as it is in RL, although I'm a bit more reserved in SL than I am in RL which seems backwards to me. Oh well...it is what it is.

I say i am me all the time, no matter which AV i'm using (and really it's almost all Allegria all the time now), but I've noticed subtle personality differences between my avatars. So, no, I'm not consciously role-playing, but evidently, there is some filtering going on.
I think, for one thing, that "self" is inextricably linked with our physical being, consciousness is a product of physiology. We're so tied to the earth here in RL. But our pixel selves carry themselves differently, and interact with the world differently. We can fly, we can TP, if we totally screw up, we can invent another life.
To a certain degree, in SL and RL, we are formed by others expectations. So our choices of Avatar influences others expectations and thus our own personalities.

Derbor is me.. I find it difficult to 'act' a different personality. So, even when in an RP situation its just me. The language might be different, but it really is just my rl self in sl...
I am a little more open in sl thatn in rl... but overall I am pretty much the same.

Glad it was clickyboxes!
I go between role and OOC at will. Usually I prefer to be in-role, but some situations require me to be OOC. And really, a lot of my "role" is just me, through a filter.
In some instances I might be in both at the same time, which gets really confusing.

Basically I am myself - my character's traits are evidently me; avaricious, argumentative, funny, annoying. I think I am fun to be with but I am probably wrong. I collect art in real and I do so here. I change my hairstyles in real and I do so here. All sorts of things make me act like I do in reality. Someone in the real world said to me today that they had never met anyone quite as vain as me or as much of an extrovert. That was a REAL compliment. I think SL confirms my behaviours in reality - and probably does for everyone else who maintains any semblence fo their real "selves".

Interesting answers in this thread.
For me - yes and no.
Weston is pretty much the guy behind the keyboard -- except I don't look like John Tesh in RL and frankly didn't intend to look that way in SL. I need a little more tweaking.
The real me, who puts out an unintentional "leave me alone" vibe in RL seems to come through in SL too. I'm not all that approachable. Part of this is being embarrassed by a sub par computer, especially lately.
The weird thing is, I do role play with my alt. He is kind of a cross between professorial and indie rocker if you can picture that. For some reason a lot of people approach him with questions and he is genuinely more sociable than the real me. I cannot account for this other than maybe he looks wise.
It's not like I have a multiple personality. We all wear different hats or show different facets of ourselves in different situations. That's one of the most interesting things about the platform. We can really explore ourselves while revelling in the creativity of others.

Ive settled on three looks in SL a Vampire Girl and a Snake Girl and a "me" avitar...thats really based on what I was like when I was 20... err... so ... like last year.
When im "me" I am me, and if im in my other skins but not in a RP zone I dont RP much..
Still would like to get a job as a SL greeter with my Vampire girl though... can see it now...

no role just me, good and bad I am much more relaxed in game, than I am on the forums. The forums tends to get my no nonsense side of me (plus more stuff on the forums gets under my skin, than in world) most often you will find me at my store either moving stuff around, or in my workshop building something or working on clothes occasionally you will find me in my house relaxing (as I work in photoshop LOL) or you will find me at avatar island doing my customer support there. and when I find time I am either fishing or playing games at the arcade the rare times I check out other stores... also inbetween all that, I pop onto the orientation islands and help islands to assist new residents, or you might find me in the public oi's and hi's or welcome areas. I am .... all over the place LOL but no matter where I am, or what avatar I have on, I am still me, my personality comes through. The only time I role play is on saturdays RL with hubby and a few other's (we rp a comic hero kinda thing) my sat. is totally SL free

Well ofcourse I am not as good looking as my av(though I am cute in my own right ) It is all me. My personality and all the good and bad that goes with it. I am a lot more social in SL than RL though. In RL I tend to hide from ringing phones.

When I first arrived, I came with the intent to play a role.
The thing is, it's quite difficult in SL. Things like building, scripting, etc. have a strong influence on the role you play, but they're based on RL traits.
Plus, of course, many occasions in SL are pretty much purely social and playing a "role" in them can be tricky (at least, without becoming an ass in the process). I mean, the classic example of this is, George Lucas doesn't show us half an hour of Luke Skywalker or Princess Leia just chilling out at the cantina. Why not? Because they'd basically be the same as anyone else.

I tried to make my avatar as realistic as possible, but I was not able to make it pretty enough No, seriously, I'm pretty much me. Except of course, my avatar is younger, more pretty and perfect and I do own a whole lot more dresses and gowns in SL than I do in RL And I dress more elegantly and stylish in SL than I would normally do in RL. But my personality is me - I do not play a different person. Though, I have dared do a few things in SL I would not have done in RL and I do have an alt I use for the few occations where I may wish to participate in outrageously immoral activities

Dementia's personality is 100% me. Normally, her hair color is one I would have in rl, dark or red (being a woman, I have experimented with different hair color in rl). The clothing she wears is ecclectic and reflects my many moods or inner me, though there are some things I would never dare to wear in rl even if I had her body. If I'm going out to a particular club or event, I will dress accordingly for the ambience of the situation. If my Master is online, I will wear what he suggests.
I sometimes tend to adjust my manner of speaking dependant upon the character types or personalities that I'm interacting with. ie. If a man addresses the women as Lady So&so, I would address him as Sir.
But, just like myself, Dementia is rather quiet and reserved in group activities, but more talkative one on one or with friends that she is more familiar with. Both of us go through periods of being a hermit. She shops and goes to clubs alot more than I do though, lol.

I'm always myself in SL. I just hadn't realized before that I was a robotic ear of corn or tadpole before.
Honestly I'm not sure I understand what RP is, exactly. I think I may have tried it the other day in Avaria when I went on an Adventure to find the caves as a tadpole. It was fun putting myself in the mindset of a larval amphibian swimming around and running into other avs. Is this what people are talking about?

I do not play a role at all. I sometimes think that maybe I should have come into SL being someone else, it may have made things a little less complicated. But, my av is an extension of me. I even tried to make her look like me and use my name. Although my av has a much better wardrobe and a lot more money. LOL SL is turning out to be a pretty intense experience, and I love it. I love immersing myself when I explore, etc. The only thing missing is virtual reality goggles. I can totally see why people would want to come in being someone else though. We get to be ourselves 24/7, it can be fun to pretend - whether you are a cat, wolf, 100 lbs thinner, or 40 years younger. Edited to add: I tried to be someone else at first (reckless, naughty, etc.) but I couldn't swing it.
