From: Karl Herber I was approached by a sales person in a store and when I told her "It's okay I'm just browsing" she replied with "Do you actually have any money?" Hahahaha! That is priceless! ROFL!

From: Ghosty Kips Depends. Do you talk to them for ten minutes at a time without getting a response, IM them with fond farewells after they tp away, and still feel that you've somehow been "helpful"?
If the answer is yes, then you may possibly be rude and pushy, depending on what you've been babbling needlessly all that time.
Oh, and dense. We covered dense. haha no I do not, Instead I go to their Cartoon House and click on all their poseballs while they are not home.

It is definitely a dilemma about whether to have salespeople or not. Some interesting points have been brought up here and I think it's pretty obvious that the old adage of "you can't please everyone" applies.
At the business I help manage we employ "human" greeters, or sales assistants, or whatever you would like to call them.
Their job is not to do a hard-sell at all, but to be someone that the customer know they can talk to, should they require some help. SL is designed to be a social environment and there are plenty of malls full of stores with not a soul present to whom you can ask questions.
We greet customers, and find out very quickly whether they would like help or not. If they make it very obvious that they don't, then we will leave them to their own devices, but knowing they can ask us any questions.
If they want advice, then we will go with them and help them - even going to their houses to try to work out what might fit better or not.
As for the question of why someone would do this - I think it's quite simple - camping is passive and earns you chump change. If businesses believe that the "feel" of their business should be more human, then it becomes a "service"-type job that can most definitely earn you more money than camping ever could. Not everyone can create in-world, and are often looking for something to do to raise some SL cash to have fun.
We have had a lot of success with our sales associates, and a lot of positive reaction from customers (although I suppose those that TP away as soon as they see someone heading their direction might skew those numbers!). Would much rather have someone there to invite them to our group or to give information when needed that automated systems that pester the heck out of you.

I don't mind a greeter who says Hello, Welcome and let me know if you need any help. And then keeps a safe distance. Don't ask what am I looking for, can I show you this or that, and pester me. I am in the store to buy, not be sold anything. If I need help I will ask. This applies to SL and RL. And as for banks, I use the ATM for deposits and withdrawls almost all the time. I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman,"Where's the self-help section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose. *Steven Wright

I was trying to find a new church home and just about every church I visted they would jump all over me to join. Like alot of things and this includes visiting a club in sl, I like to go there a few times to see if I like it before joining. When I am ambushed whether it's finding a church home, shopping in rl/sl or clubbing in sl, I tend not to return either.
