Ghostly,
Did you ever consider that she was attracted to you? There is more reasons than money to IM someone as they leave. She may have done it as an SL equivalent to slipping you her phone number. ![]() _____________________

I'm not sure. I think I was just hoping she would go away after the first five minutes of being ignored. In RL, it's obvious when you're ignoring a sales person. In SL, reaction times vary so much that it's difficult to know whether you're ignoring her, multitasking (IMs with others, RL phone, etc.), struggling to translate from English if it's not your native language, or just not sure what to say. No, I shouldn't have to tell someone they're being a pain in the ass. I should expect a sales associate, who is (hopefully) an adult in SL, to know when she's being a pain in the ass. Right, you shouldn't. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't have to tell them you'd like to be left alone before they become a pain. It's part of being social, it's your half of the obligation to be courteous. They can't read your mind, they can't even read your body language. It is unreasonable for you to equate your silence with her getting a message about what you want. The IM after I left was the icing on the cake, however - had she not done that I would have forgotten all about it. Instead, she got muted, and an entire thread dedicated to her and her ilk. She IMd you a polite "Have a nice day" and you got ticked off? You do realize that she didn't do it because she wanted to annoy you, she was extending a courtesy. I understand you don't appreciate it. I wouldn't either, in the sense that it wouldn't improve my opinion of her or change my attitude about going back there. But neither would I hold it against her, or allow it to raise my blood pressure. |

I love working Retail in RL. I work Jewelry and Clothing/Shoes, but still never pester anyone if they move away from me. I'll greet with a "Hello" and ask if I can help if they respond, otherwise I've better things to do than babysit someone that's shopping.
It is how some people are though, they get attached very easily. That's why the Mute button and Teleport options rock I would have simply left and shopped elsewhere. |

It was the IM after listening to her babel at me forever with nary a word in response from me. Would you keep talking at someone for a full ten minutes without a reply, and then IM me with "Have a nice day" when I tp away to boot? That's not courteous, that's dense. ![]() _____________________

Yes maybe she was dense, but she was still a human being and possibly a good person otherwise ![]() Oh, good lord. Fine, I'm certain she is a great person, a gregarious, charming human being of the highest repute and kindness of heart. I have little doubt that, in the anals (uh, huh-huh, he said 'anals') of human history, she will go down (uh, huh-huh, he said 'go down') in history as one of our all-time great retail sales people, dedicated to the [insert favorite country of origin here]'s work ethic and a credit to retail salespersons the world over. Few realize the sacrifices she must endure, pretending to stand up all day in those stilletto'd black boots, endlessly spewing talking-points, selling-points and shopping advice to ungrateful customers who don't have the foresight nor the wisdom to ask her for it in the first place. Certainly this creature of retail love and commercial grace dons her group tag with pride, knowing she sets foot into hostile territory every day, ready to wade into the sea of customers who tell themselves they do not need her help - yet, selfless and self-assured, proceeds to inject her boundless product knowledge upon all who enter the store grounds come hell or high waters. She is the mainstay, the very epitome, of our national economy. I salute you, oh wonderous retail sales girl. Thank you for the bounty you have laid upon my ears, unsupplicated and unadorned with so much as a "please" and without the reward of a "thank you". Without you, you wonderful receptacle of capitalistic desire, our shopping experiences would be quiet, dull, even catatonic. You bring life where once there was only serenity. From the bottom of my linden-laden little heart, I offer this tender soliloquy. Everyone happy now? ![]() _____________________

OK, I'll play devil's advocate on this one. First off, I hate RL shopping. And I hate overly-helpful sales people too. But... I love to find an upscale store in SL, like Blaze or Armidi. I love it when a salesgirl comes up to me and welcomes me. I love it when I ask her where to find something and she shows me right away. I love it when she suggests something that I never even thought of, and it turns out to be perfect. Not the nagging, in-your-face sort of thing you describe, Ghosty...being a good sales person means knowing when to back off. But I enjoy feeling pampered. Funny you mention Blaze...I was there earlier today purchasing a gift certificate. Took me a few to rez in and I generally knew where I was heading so took off in the general direction. Received the green scripted "Welcome....Czari." I was thinking of this thread and smiled at the non-intrusive greeting. Found the gift certificates, but then had a question. Turned around and saw a sales associate right near where I tp'd in apparently but hadn't seen her before in my haste. I walked up and asked for assistance, which was pleasantly provided. As I went back to make my purchase, several other people entered and I heard the woman greet them by name. I wasn't personally greeted when I entered, so wondering if she's read this thread...lol. ...that or I was also wearing my Gorean FW robes. We're a scary lot yanno. ![]() _____________________

How would people respond to an AI information panel in SL, a web based chat bot that could answer specific questions about store product instantly when no one else is around? Too elaborate, or too impersonal? Would people use it, or opt for email correspondence instead (even if it takes several hours to get a response)? sort of an A.L.I.C.E? I would use it _____________________

I hate pushy sales peoples. It's not enough to force me to go, and I'm normally pretty polite, but it really doesn't put me in a 'buy from this store' kinda mood.
I don't mind meeting the creators if they are around though. I also get tired of the LM/notecard automatic givers. I would rather a 'click for info' sign, otherwise I end up with 20 different LMs of the same place because you just know I'm gonna forget to delete them lol. ZOMG! You DO know what a whore's handbag smells like! (I do wear Chanel No. 5 at times, and Calvin Klein Escape lol. Add in a bit of J'Adore, a hint of Byblos and a smidgeon of something whipped up for me by a perfumer in New Orleans and there you have it!) yey! My bag has none of these....I'm safe! Though sometimes I do think mine may be worse lol... Ghost, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears x2 (i forget the names), Anna sui, Black Excess... And a load of different body sprays lol. I walk around with a bag that smells like the perfume section of Selfridges, but I usually forget to wear them lol. _____________________

I was approached by a sales person in a store and when I told her "It's okay I'm just browsing" she replied with "Do you actually have any money?"
I TP'd straight out and will never visit that store again even if I'm paid to do so. _____________________

I often ask people if they need help finding stuff... Does that make me rude and pushy too? No, that is being polite and helpful. It's the continued tagging along and talking incessantly after one says "No thank you, I'm just looking" (reference my prior post and the OP original). ![]() _____________________

And, assuming she wasn't the owner, I probably would have IM'd whoever was about it too. _____________________

I often ask people if they need help finding stuff... Does that make me rude and pushy too? Depends. Do you talk to them for ten minutes at a time without getting a response, IM them with fond farewells after they tp away, and still feel that you've somehow been "helpful"? If the answer is yes, then you may possibly be rude and pushy, depending on what you've been babbling needlessly all that time. Oh, and dense. We covered dense. _____________________
