What should a CEO's avatar look like?

We just *have* to answer this question.

Frivolous question, you might think. "Des, how could it possibly matter!? Isn't this question about on the level of Mariah Carey's Glitter album on the scale of importance, in a post 9-11 world?"

Well, I would disagree. It *matters* and it matters a lot. Personality, creativity, open-mindedness, flair... a starting point, a gut reaction. The difference between a handshake and a flashed gangsign as a first impression!

One simply can't be mismatched to the world you represent. Imagine mustard in a ketchup bottle. Imagine Conan the Barbarian in 70's light blue polyester. Imagine Predator hanging out in front of 7-11 eating a burrito. It just doesn't work.

Some of you might be thinking: "Look, there have been some VERY successful CEO positions involving wildly spiked hair, and a disco-bling codpiece."

Well sure. But that was *right for the times!* - during the wild, crazy days where casino's ruled, landbarons-to-be were still escorts and grid attacks spelled "LOL" on the map using crashed mainland regions. Now, things are different.

These days, one hides the wild and crazy Founding Father in the metaphorical attic, while others focus on boring things like, you know, making things work all the time. Taking the Internet Seriously, and so forth.

And that requires a totally different image.

This being the grid, the standard CEO three piece suit and power tie just doesn't communicate... at least not to me. Or rather, it communicates something offputting, like "bank scammer" or "pretend stock market" or "fifteen year old playing grown-up." No easy answer, there.

On the other hand, a noob avatar screams either 'noob' or 'griefer' or 'land bot' - one simply can't be CEO with a noob look without impacting the message.

It's sort of like the CEO of Halliburton driving clients to power lunches in Herbie the Volkswagen.

So what would fit, fellow residents? What should the leader of the greatest Metaverse in the western world look like?

Answers in the form of pictures, avatar screenshots or just comments welcome.

I've always been fond of hedgehogs but that may not be the image he's going for.

Hmm. On the other hand, a hedgehog is a very pragmatic creature capable of survival under fairly extreme conditions - certainly not the worst choice for an avatar!

How about when they're transformed into some kind of little bear and hopping on people's heads while they're being transported away and don't have time to respond?

It should have big ears.
It should look tired (from the work don'cha know) , yet quietly confident.
It should look powerful, yet approachable.

A friendly elephant?

i think our CEO should be a grunge-type rogue, maybe even a neko. something fun and creative and definitely apparantly making use of the artistic offerings and objects residents have put into the game.

a cool cat, as it were.

Here's what I thought to myself when I read Mitch Kapor's speech about Second Life's transition period (from pioneers to pragmatists):

The free-love, psychedelic 70s hippie phase of Second Life is over. The Reaganomics, 80s preppie phase has begun.

Obviously they need to wear a sequined codpiece. Is Philip going to pass that on to M?

all lindens should only be allowed to wear what's provided to new players in the standard library, and made to carry the torch.

I'd suggest a child avatar, to suggest fresh thinking and creativity. ;-)

Not this, though:
