From: Briher Destiny I got an email with an invitation to participate in a survey for merchants about selling items in sl.
Good idea, I thought ... maybe have some influence on new improvements.
I started the survey, but got stuck on the page with the "Please rank the following tools in the order of your interest. (Drag and Drop)" There are 5 ranks. The way I read the question, I had to rank a list of tools from 1 to 5. So I started putting the suggested tools in order of interest.
But but but ... I put more than one choise in each rank and it won't let me remove them from the rank-box to fix the error I get - "No more than 1 choices may be assigned to each group." ... So I am just stuck on that page with no possibility to finish the survey.
Unless, one of you know how to correct that mistake. Yeah me too, how lame. Why let me drop 2 items into the box with out it being allowed, and why can't I remove them? Silly, you wasted my time, and now you can't get my valuable opinion. And why is this here instead of on the XStreet forum? I hate this tiny print!

Pep (In several senses.) Naw. It looks like a second round of Emails just went out today. (^_^) From: Honey Something Yeah me too, how lame. Meh. Started to try the survey, gave up. None of it seems to apply (I aint doing this to make big $$) and I dont track percentages and I'm rather apathetic to whether folks buy my stuff or not. If ya like it, buy it. If not... meh.

The drag and drop areas of the survey don't work in Opera. I gave up.

Link
06-12-2009 20:13
Greetings,
I received the email today stamped with the time of 5:41 pm (probably my time which is CST)
When I click on the link or paste the alternate provided link I received the following error message from the Qualtrics Survey Software:
The url is incorrect. Please double check the url and try again.
I'd of been happy to complete the survey and appreciate y'all for attempting to gather info from merchants so send it again if you like.
Thanks,
Tawney Bian

Time to fire Qualtrics for both bad design and implementation.

Unable to complete survey because of missing "N/A" options.
06-12-2009 21:59
I could not complete the survey because on one page you asked me to list in order of importance five items that would improve XStreetSL, and only one of the listed choices was anything I cared about at all. I listed that one as most important, left the choices for 2nd through 5th most important blank, and when the survey insisted I fill in the blanks I simply closed the web page.
I suspect your users would be happier if you hired someone who actually knew how to write surveys; that one just wasted my time.

Would have been better if the selected people had first gotten an anouncement in a official LL email. It was scary to click "Questions about the legitimacy of this survey. Click here."
... just did the survey, it was agonizing that the question where one has to drag choices to ALL boxes, forced me to give answers that did not apply to me.

From: Briher Destiny Unless, one of you know how to correct that mistake. It happened to me too... try to drag the item to be removed all the way to the left off your screen, that worked for me.

Strangest thing about this survey is that they are explicitly asking for merchant opinions and then the whole survey just asks questions about how you spend money and your shopping experience. WTF?

From: Andren Linden Hi everyone,
Thought I'd drop a quick little post here in case anyone came by looking for some answers. I'm currently partnering with Pink Linden and Colossus Linden on two surveys. The survey is hosted by our research vendor Qualtrics. When I sent out the invitation previously there were some concerns that this was a phishing scam. While I appreciate the vigilance, I am letting you know that these surveys are legitimate.
While we are on the subject of phishing, please note that we will never ask you for your username or password in a survey. We appreciate the vigilance, and if you are one of the people selected to take the survey we would appreciate your feedback.
Thanks, Andren Linden I've answered your survey Andren - but it would have been better if your email had given the heads-up that you were asking for statistics about Xstreet sales - then I could have been prepared instead of gathering guestimates on the fly. I should also like to know what selection criteria you use to pick out residents for surveys such as this. I suppose I am really expressing concerns about the validity of the data gathered and its fitness for purpose.

Incomplete questionnaire
06-13-2009 02:58
I received the X-street merchant request for feedback by e-mail.
1) I went through the first few pages, until it dawned on me that my major X-street activity was not covered by the questionnaire at all:
I announce land sales on X-street, in the the Real Estate section. These advertisements bring the customers to the lots in question, where they buy my land and pay their tiers as long as they stay. Approx. 85% of my SL income is facilitated by X-street in this way and I'm sure a considerable percentage of SL turnover is facilitated by the X-street Real Estate section. Btw, better functionality of the Real Estate section is needed!
The questionnaire could have started with the following 2 questions: Do you sell or set land for rent via X-street? Do you sell content via X-street?
then have branched off from there.
2) I rarely do a survey unless it is open! 10 min surveys of which I don't know the aim and the direction is not something I do... There are many who, like me, won't do a survey unless it is open - unless you can read it from front to end - and give a meaningful response.

The survey is BROKE :-/
The bokes asking me to drag and drop in order of preference firstly doesn't say "only one choice per box" but allows more than one choice per box to be placed there. THEN, when it's thrown up an error, won't let me remove any items I've put in them, only move them around. Refreshing doesn't work.
*sigh* I'm more than happy to do these surveys, but I'm NOT more than happy to piss around with bad programming.

I have taken loads of surveys over the years and created a few professionally as well. Yeah, I have to agree with the other posters...you really need to hire a statistician and a survey writer that knows how to write a decent survey. But of course, the questions and how they are written on the surveys LL uses gives you the answers that you wish to hear. If you were to publish your results in a professional journal, you would be a laughing stock...well maybe not, because your data would be scrutinized and actually never be published because it would never pass the editors of the journal.
Aside from that, why would anyone wish to take your surveys? The information you glean is never used appropriately nor do you listen to the answers the takers present to you. Just look at the forums, the JIRA, and other communication tools...they are giving you all the answers you need; however, you basically ignore them and go about your rose colored world.
LL needs to seriously take off the rose colored glasses and wake up. You are losing people...good quality paying residents... to other virtual worlds. This is no longer a user created world unless it reflects the world LL wishes to create. It is no longer the world I came too and grew to love and cherish. I think alot of people feel that way. You have used the resident content creators to put you on the world stage and now that you are there you shove them into a corner like some backward relative as you try to disassociate yourselves.
Your gross missteps over the past year and current ones have to be losing your bread and butter resident business. Why would any RL business want to become part of SL if you are driving off a possible client base for them? Be aware that other virtual worlds are taking lessons from your inability to listen and implement changes the residents want. No amount of surveys are going to make a fundamental difference if you do not listen and implement what the users base wants.
I beg you to listen to the residents...glean thru the information available to you and fix things. Please save our world before it is too late.

The survey is biased
06-13-2009 07:08
The survey is biased in how it is written and executed. For example, participants are asked to rank from most important to least important several criteria.
None of them is important to me. I'm given no ability to opt out of the question. Now, I just opt out of the surveys altogether.
How a survey is constructed can, in part, determine its outcome through the presumptions or bias or preconceptions of those who wrote it.
Good try. No cigar. Abandoned midway. Never waste my time on another one. Well done.

Took the survey.
It assumes that "Owning land" means mainland. I chose "Other" and indicated "From another resident - PRIVATE ISLAND SIM". There was no decent way to indicate that you only own land on Private Islands, and not Mainland.
On several questions I felt more detail was needed to answer accurately. For example, it also assumed that XStreetSL was and has always been the only off-world way to sell content. My first sales I had to indicate xstreet, but in the next possible free-entry text field I indicated that it should have been SL Boutique for my first sales.
There was also no way to indicate how your sales practices had changed. I used to sell clothes 100% via SL Boutique. Then I expanded into in-world mall booths. Then I added furniture and texture sales and got my own store. Then I closed all my off-world sales for a while. Then I closed my mall stores and went to selling only textures and building services. Advertising changed as my efforts changed.
The question on Adult Content offered no way to indicate if you USED TO sell adult stuff, and quit because of new restrictions, or if you PLAN TO sell adult stuff in the future. Again, I used a later free-entry field to get that answered properly.
All told, the survey could have been done a lot better. I just hope they read all the free-entry areas and take that data into account.

I got about 4 pages into the survey and stopped. What percentage of items I buy that are adult or not adult is no one's business. Since the survey won't allow an "opt out" answer on this question, I decline to continue with the survey. I would also point out that many of the questions seemed to assume a much shorter SL life than the one I've had. Questions like "Why did you make your first purchase where you did?" are really irrelevant to someone who's been in SL 5 or 6 years. (The answer is, in my case, because that was the only damned place one COULD make a purchase at the time.) In all honesty, I really think this newbie batch of Lindens needs to talk to some of the older crowd once in a while and remember that not everyone in world can cram themselves into the same pidgeon-holes they can. Remember, Lindens, YOU asked me to take this, not the other way around. The least you could do would be provide me with options that make sense. Kam

mine was all about how I sell stuff, and which place (in world or xstreet) worked best for me and why, and what would I do to improve xstreet... I felt the survey was more about selling on xstreet than anything else pertaining to selling I had a sense that the survey was asking different questions based on responses to earlier questions. I agree, though, that this is really a fishing expedition for ways LL might wring more profits out of Xstreet. They screwed-up the question about how land was bought. It was "check all that apply" but the selections were radio buttons.
