Hi everyone,

Thought I'd drop a quick little post here in case anyone came by looking for some answers. I'm currently partnering with Pink Linden and Colossus Linden on two surveys. The survey is hosted by our research vendor Qualtrics. When I sent out the invitation previously there were some concerns that this was a phishing scam. While I appreciate the vigilance, I am letting you know that these surveys are legitimate.

While we are on the subject of phishing, please note that we will never ask you for your username or password in a survey. We appreciate the vigilance, and if you are one of the people selected to take the survey we would appreciate your feedback.

Thanks, Andren Linden

Maybe you should make this a sticky if Qualtrics are partners.

Personally I'm more put off by surveys by the fact that LL simply don't listen to their users, the adult continent is a classic example, the openspace issue was another, if you want worthwile feedback the process needs to work both ways.

Thank you for posting, Andren!

I'll second Ciaran's post and then add: We'd be a lot less suspicious of surveys if we weren't confronted by two or more a week in these forums for supposed university/grad students.

QFT. I would gladly respond to surveys where I felt my responses were valued as a contribution to improving the SL experience, but I'm totally uninterested in anything that smacks of data mining or mere lip-service to customer feedback.

In addition, if you have anything to do with the pop-up 'surveys' at log-in, I strongly suggest you re-consider their value. Asking whether one's experience has improved or not is meaningless without defining the type of 'experience' in question (i.e. technical, social, etc.) and the facility to respond extensively on matters of performance, interaction, etc. Likewise, the likelihood of recommending SL to others is a question that cannot be answered without context. For those reasons, I generally ignore them.

Agreed. They're far too broad. If you asked "has your technical experience improved" I would answer. Or even go more detailed than that - "Has lag improved?" "Have sim crossings improved?" "Have Inventory issues improved?" would be far more useful to you AND us.

If you truly are interested in listening to the residents, then ask the very question that concerns the residents the most in the survey.

i.e., what are their opinions about the change in Adult content policy, and inform them of the policy if they had not known about it yet.

Asking the question of whether SL is getting better or worse is totally worthless. Is that even a meaningful question?

Yes, in its own way, it is a meaningful question. In addition to having detailed answers, it's useful to get the gut reaction too.. (edit: IMO, anyway)

Yes we need more sticky posts. We need enough to make the entire first page of the forums orange.

Qualtrics Surveys on the Latest Client
04-04-2009 01:58
I don't mind participating in a survey if it leads to some improvement. However I should point out that the 'Submit' button or whatever is invisible on the occasional Qualtrics survey that pops up at log in in the latest client window. I run SL on Windows XP. Unless selection of one of the radio buttons represents an automatic submission, I don't think that my recent response was logged at all.

Yeah I had that on a recent one, I couldn't resize the window to read the full question and there was no sign of a submit button. I could work out what the question was as it was only missing the last letter, but there was something not quite right with the window there.

We're working hard at Linden Lab to better understand how and why you use land in Second Life, and how we can make it better. To that end, we'd appreciate a few minutes of your time to answer some helpful questions for our land team. With your insight, we know we'll be able to continue to evolve and improve the land ownership experience in Second Life.

This is actually not true. The Resident's Choice Awards survey asks for username.

Speaking of sticky posts, maybe it's time for a moderator to un-sticky the one about Winterfaire, since it ended 3 months ago... :-D

A clarification: I think Andren is referring to a specific type of survey done via email, where links in the email send you to the Qualtrics site.

The popups that we see on login are a different deal. No idea whether Andren's crowd is actually involved in them - it seems their only purpose is to take the temperature of active residents. Like the "consumer confidence" measurements the U.S. government follows so closely. They, too, are pretty vague questions - see this for an example:

This survey is badly flawed
05-23-2009 05:05
Rather sad that I can't go back and review the questions, so my criticisms will have to be based on memory.

1. The survey asks if you predominantly use SL for social networking. Even if you answer that your main use of SL is for other purposes the survey continues, on the next page to ask you questions about social networking.

2. The survey asks if you knew your friends before you first signed up for SL but the question is not clearly stated and is confusing because it has no context.

3. The question about what could be improved in making contacts in SL offers options that it would be impossible to implement in the context of the current SL culture: for instance, to be able to search for someone by the RL name. How could that be possible when the prevailing culture is to be anonymous in SL; "What happens in SL stays in SL" and "SL is SL and RL is RL", etc. I seem to recall there were other similar questions and choices that are unrealistic and pointless in the SL context.

I found the survey to be counter-intuitive, limited in allowing me to express anything useful, and, in summary, a waste of time.

merchant opinions
06-12-2009 05:33
I got an email with an invitation to participate in a survey for merchants about selling items in sl.

Good idea, I thought ... maybe have some influence on new improvements.

I started the survey, but got stuck on the page with the "Please rank the following tools in the order of your interest. (Drag and Drop)"
There are 5 ranks. The way I read the question, I had to rank a list of tools from 1 to 5.
So I started putting the suggested tools in order of interest.

But but but ... I put more than one choise in each rank and it won't let me remove them from the rank-box to fix the error I get - "No more than 1 choices may be assigned to each group." ...
So I am just stuck on that page with no possibility to finish the survey.

Unless, one of you know how to correct that mistake.
