Quests!

Right now Octoberville is in full swing - that kept us busy last year for the entire month!

The Pot Healer Quest was another one that kept us busy and entertained for several months. (These quests are addictive!)

I began the Broken Harp Quest - mainly because I wanted the gorgeous prize at the end - a lovely harp that plays Celtic tunes, but for some reason got side-tracked. (Need to go back to that one.)

Mata Hari Quest - that one involves jewelry as prizes.

Main interests:
*Taking classes
*Teaching classes
*Building
*Starting a SL business
*Organizing inventory (ok everyone laugh...but it really relaxes me!)

And most of all....just being in world with my Partner...even if all we do is sit and chat.

Check out the Loco Pocos sim. There is a halloween build/hunt going on. It is so mystical, it`s rad.

I agree that creating stuff is a lot of fun in Second Life. I love working on, fixing, and improving my Universal Translator device for chat. Scripting has been a fun way to get away from RL for awhile. You just gotta find your niche.

Every Wednesday night the Virtual Artist Alliance has a contest. Participants have 60 minutes to shoot a photo somehwere in SL not known until the time comes. Then we will all vote on the results. I may just be a spectator, vote, and donate funds this first time. It was great fun when they did it at the The Burning Life Festival.

They also hold weekly Haiku speedbuilds which look like a lot of fun. I don't think my nerves are up to that sort of thing though. I also saw somewhere a 3d version of a game like Pictionary (a sort of charades but with drawing, or in this case building) that looked like loads of fun. I was new then and did not have the skills. Now I think I could have a crack at it. Would love to see that reinstated if that's not what the Haiku builds are about.

These sorts of things are far more fun than walking into the meat market atmosphere of many dancing venues, though I love dancing too.

My alt likes to fly things and go horseback riding, but my typist doesn't let me do those. :mad:

I wanted to start a thread and see what, if any, things that are truly fun are left in SL. Open to any answers.

Some I can think of off the top of my head are:

* Art Galleries
* Classes
* Interactive in world games
* Building and Desiging
* Lectures
* Live music
* Treasure hunts

Fun in SL has nothing to do with the latest viewers and technology as much as LL would have us believe otherwise.

It's creating stuff for me too Cappy, but I'm sure you already knew that :)

tip:
don't judge Second Life by the places you see flying at random around it.

that'd be similar to judging the web by opening random pages and websites. you don't do that: you use instead search engines, recommendations by other people and link from other websites.

we don't have a good search engine yet. but we have LOTS OF blogs about activities in SL.
find a blog you like to read because it covers nice places/events, read its article and visit the places it talks about.

i do this regularly and i never have enough time to visit them all - however, i constantly find nice and fun places

Fun is sneaking up on people and biting them on the ankles.

There are more fun things in SL now than there ever were I think. But there is also more boring, unimaginative rubbish than ever. The world has got a lot bigger, and I think the proportion of good stuff may have gone down, but in terms of numbers of good builds and fun places I think it's better than ever, just sometimes takes a bit more searching to find it. I can't think of much that I really enjoyed that has gone, a few places aren't there anymore, but there are always new and usually better alternatives springing up.

The one thing that contually surprises me is that, although I go through phases of finding it hard to find stuff I really enjoy, it never lasts, and after 2-3 weeks of wondering why I bother with SL, it suddenly all comes together and I'll have 2-3 months of never having time to do everything I want to.

I had so much fun just last Saturday playing Madgab/Madbonds at a club called Demented Souls. Seriously - I was laughing so hard I nearly fell out of my seat. Trivia games can be a hoot, too. I haven't been to one in a while, but I run across them listed on the calendar.

I had fun decorating my yard for Halloween - kitschy and amateur compared to many builds I've seen, but it was fun.

I've had a very creative building streak, too, since I decided that realism is overrated. You might not mistake my latest trees for something "real", but it sure was fun making them.

I can't believe all the cool items and places all y'all have mentioned. That's one of my big problems with SL: NO good awareness advertising venues. You have to seek stuff out. There is nooooo good way to advertise to people like me who are not actively seeking out watermelon guns or Madgab clubs. Which is horrible, because I LOVE THAT STUFF! Seriously, LL needs to figure this out and fast. How can I attend a Haiku Speed build when I don't even know it exists? And sorry, I don't have time to do search after search and read everyone's vanity sites/blogs. I need advertising! And reccomendations by people I trust. Like an Entertainment Weekly, but just for SL.

SPECIAL FREE OFFER FOR SOMETHING FUN LEFT IN SL. I've spent about a year designing a suspended coaster ride. It's like a roller coaster but not. It does things no coaster in RL could possibly do. Or maybe want to. Here's the FREE part:

Send me an IM after you've ridden it and YOUR FIRST RIDE IS ON ME. If you don't know where it is, here's a slurl:
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Qwandry/29/190/29

Actually, there are two coasters there and a wild spin and puke ride that I co-designed. That one is totally free! And yes, you will get very dizzy. And wet.

'tis true! One of the other issues is that often what is fun is also really random. Some of the most fun moments I've had inworld have been simply random happenings. Not exactly the sort of thing you'll be able to find in events an stuff.

Another issue is scale. The photoshoot last night was fun, and I actually would have loved to have more of a "40s event" of some kind -- but we had a stack of people and too many more would have made it unmanageable and even more lagalicious. I was kinda quiet on the advertising for it because of that. With my firework shows this last summer, I was regularly getting to the point where the sim was full by showtime.

Can you really get dizzy from SL? If that were the case, I'd get dizzy and puke at all the crap in SL.

And Argent, that's not what you think is biting your ankles!

Fun in SL has nothing to do with the latest viewers and technology as much as LL would have us believe otherwise.

this can be true or not according to what you do with/in Second Life. i don't think i'm a typical user, however some of the most funny things I enjoy in Second Life include

- playing with physics (this hugely improved thanks to Havok4)
- taking weird snapshots while playing with Glow effect and Debug Settings and/or tweaking Environment settings
- enjoying nice places that leverage on Windlight technology
- having a quasi-cinematographic experience by almost constantly use of SpaceNavigator 3D mouse (Spacenavigator support being another recent technical improvement)

for sure, i saw Second Life improving in these contexts in the last 12 months.

but again, these activities may be not funny or interesting at all for most people. social activities are more common - still they aren't made easy by the Second Life social tools, that i find quite primitive if compared to most social networks.

I used to have lots of fun things to do. And then havok 4 came along and they all broke and now i have nothing to do at all lol.

Don't get me wrong i'm grateful it did, was a massive improvement in performance. But with not much left to do other than stand around for hours on end and talk after 2 years its starting to become really boring on the grid.

Can I have your (broken) stuff? :p

I found Havok 4 made things a lot better for me. My Kayak had to be upgraded and I had a couple other glitches. I am still grumbly about my hugger messing up sometimes, too. But my Flying Tako works great, the new blimp works beautifully with H4, my soap box racer is heck on wheels. Even th' Primouths I was playin' with last night work great.

It's not my ankles that are getting bit, it's me that's doing the biting.

No you can't :P lol

It broke most of my weapons so gun play is out of the question, and silly simple things that provided hours of mindless fun for example placing a platform 500m up and then running about trying to push each other off of it, just doesn't work at all, have you tried pushing an avatar with your own these days, it just doesn't work.

My favorite hover bike got borked, and the lazy ass maker cant be bothered to update it even though it costs a small fortune and people are still buying them etc etc etc etc.

If it's broken and he's still selling them, I suggest painting a lemon on the side of yours and leaving it somewhere they can't help but notice it. :)

I now own a chicken shooter, a cow shooter, watermelon shooter... I need target practice :)

I guess the cow tipping party is completely pointless now.
