philosophical question of the week: tolerance

Way too fuzzy a question . . . intolerant attitudes, or intolerant actions? My response would differ accordingly: I would "tolerate" someone with homophobic attitudes, but not to the extent of letting them go gay-bashing. I can tolerate religious fundamentalism of all stripes, until they start shooting at abortion doctors or executing people for adultery.

What do you mean by tolerate? Does this extend to the expression of messages of hate? Someone who engages in a real discussion about their hatred of homosexuality or women . . . sure, ok, with reservations. Someone who stands on a street corner with a big sign saying "Kill the Fags" or "All Women are Whores" . . . not so much. The former is an attempt to communicate ideas (however bankrupt these may be); the latter is intended to foment violent action, and to deprive a segment of the population of its rights without even permitting the exchange of viewpoints.

You appear to be mixing up "former" and "latter" . . . ;)

Not necessarily, though I find that I tend to mostly ignore those who are intolerant, rather than become intolerant of them. Life's too short.

Mind you, if we're talking about people who are taking it to greater levels, such as in Darfur or other, similar situations... that's different. The sort of stuff that comes up 'round SL by and large? Eh, there's more important things in the world.

I'm with Marianne on this one. For the most part, I ignore the behavior, especially in the forums where things can easily be taken out of context and flame wars ensue. Now, if the intolerance is resulting in a direct attack on someone, I may speak up in their defense. But by and large, the intolerant trolls on the boards are not worth the time and energy they demand. Why give them the attention they seek?

Yes, please. I like lemon meringue pie best.

Ok - I'll answer seriously.

I'll tolerate anyone who does not cause me aggravation.

I've studied tolerance for years, and can do a precise analysis to say when there will be trouble or not.

And you can too!

Reflection is almost always acceptable.

Be intolerant of intolerance, hate hate, love love, be suspicious of suspecian, etc :)

Yes I think it should mean that to the OP.

I think as far as this forum and other similar forums go if you have a high post count you can practice intolorance and be blatantly rude and condecending to others. Not saying everyone is, or that anyone with a high post count is automatically rude. However the moment anyone who doesn't post very often says anything similar they can be jumped on much quicker. Just because some can get post counts at 1000 to 10000 doesn't mean your ubber net cool or all knowing lol. So I guess its a matter of how its perceived and by who. Some seem to think that because others have a low post count it automatically means they're a noob or have no clue about things in SL or the outside world because post count MUST be a number that coincides with intelligence or something.

I don't mind anyone or what they say. I figure if someone wishes to say something rude or belittling to someone then they must not mind if they're treated the same. I like to treat most people the same way they treat others. Unfortunately sometimes people don't like to be treated the same way they treat others. Its kinda funny that.

Interesting. I don't think a mild difference of opinion on topic is at all the same as calling a woman every derogatory name for women in the book as well as descriptions of pornographic acts.

Funny how you see yourself as victim, in your completely unwarranted and off forum attack. Taking it in world is unwarranted in itself. We have never even spoken or met -- until these threads which are actually MILD for forum discussions -- and I have yet to see what in any of my posts even set you off in the first place!? You have yet to even say what in any way warranted that level of outright abuse.

Disagree with me on topic that's fine. I don't understand taking it where you did, though. You freaking scared me I hope you are happy with that.

Question of the week:

does being tolerant of others also include tolerating intolerant people?

I know it sounds like a logic problem, but it really isn't.

There is a limit - and the concept of time and place apply.

Obviously in a public space, a freely expressive society needs to accept a wider range of views than is polite, and in fact this is necessary for a society to be able to grow and develop. But 'hate speech', like incitement - is destructive conduct more so than it is 'expression'.

There is no real tolerance in SL, just like in RL. Even less than in RL, sometimes.

That's an easy question to answer; you'll live until you die.

It' funny, innit, I wish people woulda tolerated my moods and swings when I was a teen. Especially when I used to get rat-faced and played loud music.

It was getting rat-faced at the same time that did for me I think. And in my dorm.

Aw, Jiggy, these comments make me realize how indulged I was. My poor mother would allow me to play Black Flag or the Circle Jerks or whatever I thought would do her head in over and over in the car on long drives. That reminds me, next time I am home and drive her to our favorite beach, I must dig out that very old Surf Punks cassette and she and I can sing along to it and horrify the children!

At school they tried to manage the sound level by doing something to our ipods and buds. It was a plot.

Yeh, me too, I'll only fire up on the when they try and take my pie before I offer them some, or get cranky if I don't offer... That's about it.

Well my comments stand as thats what my opinion was, but I will say this again clarissa.
I've had to say this several times now, and in several places. So I'll say it again. I've had to report you once again, and please cease and desist any further attempts of personal attacks in a public forum.

Nice topic tho to bring a personal grievance into a forum.
