Maybe LL is hiring the same EBay Mods that are coming here to also handle AR's.

For gods' sake!

I was chatting with the owner of the Whittenton's mall one night as she was working on her signs, and distracted her. The thing was physical (I have no idea why), she dropped it, and it fell on me.

We both had a good laugh about it.

An AR? For THAT?! Some people...

Do people forget that this ISN"T REAL? What's next SL ambulance chasers?

In all honesty, people DO forget it's not real. This phenomenon actually has a name: immersion. It's one of the most attractive and addictive features of a virtual world like Second Life.

Immersion is fine...when things that you like are happening. Immersion is also what leads to things like this spurious AR. Obviously, the person felt attacked, or at least harmed by someone else's carelessness.

We laugh at their silliness (I just did, in my previous post). They forgot that this isn't real...which, in a way, is the whole point, so perhaps I shouldn't have laughed. The only solution I can see is to remind people to shake their heads, sit up, and tell themselves that all this isn't real from time to time.

Who's the buttwipe who AR'd that? OMG some people are really just over the top.

Now I'm really getting concerned. Seems just owning a store is a dangerous thing and very well could get you suspended/banned or worse! Porked by a Linden!

I'm not sure that at this point whether I should go bury my $L in a coffee can on my parcel somewhere, transfer them to a hardly used alt or just cash them out entirely.

LINDEN LABS EMPLOYEES ARE YOU READING TEH FORUMS? YOU'RE SERIOUSLY MESSING UP HERE! I'm reading some damn ugly things happening to people at the hands of the AR. Maybe I'll just go back to playing the Sims and creating content for that again. This is just garbage! *spit spit spit*

That's all fine and well, but the Lindens are not immersed in SL, they are the ones that actually banned the artist.

Most likely Cluless Linden.

thanks, dekka, for making this public, and thanks to all of you for the replies! it made me smile, and yes, there's definitely something funny about the whole story! except that i was banned for a whole day (i've created that 'dangerous' piece).

and here's the complete story again:
- i've created a physical chain (physically linked hollow prims) and installed it above the stage at BiW
- a resident was standing there (i know her name, i've talked to her to explain what happened and verify the story, she was sorry, and i asked her to be more careful with ARs next time)
- the chain broke (as most of you know, physical links are pretty unstable, i'd call it a bug, but for my piece it's just fine)
- about 20 prims of the breaking chain fell down and hit the resident
- the resident looked at the push log, and saw that she had been hit by 20 scripted prims (the prims are scripted so that the chain becomes self-repairing !!!)
- the resident sent me an IM asking why i hit her, but i was offline (sleeping)
- about 40 minutes later, i was banned for one day (i filed a ticket at the support portal, but got no answer so far, except for the automated acknowledgment)

I have never seen such hysteria generated as there is by being pushed or bumped in SL. I've never even looked at the Push log in the entire time I've been here. I'm not talking about someone intentionally pushing you across a sim of course, that's harrassment and AR worthy, but the OMG someone bumped into me, or someone pushed me and my avatr moved a whole 5 feet!!!!!! Lighten up, folks.

Thanks for posting the explanation here and hopefully the resident that was bumped wont do this again in hurry. Maybe set the land to damage enabled that way AR's wont hold any water if it happens again ;)

Until Dekka posted this i had never heard of BiW and was able to visit today briefly and will visit later for a longer look. So through your misfortune maybe others now will come visit and support this great idea :) However LL really ought to get their acts together and look at the AR system as the way it is now its seriously borked :(

Coincidentally, a different Foucault also had a thing about physical objects hanging from great height:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foucault_pendulum

(which I wouldn't have known, were it not for a book by Umberto Eco that is kind of similar to The Da Vinci Code--except that it doesn't suck).

interesting.

first, all of my support to Selavy- I was actually delighted when the chains fell on my head, last week. it was an interesting surprise.

second, how ridiculous- does no one actually investigate ARs? the potential for vindictive griefing is staggering.

third, I went inworld to check out what sort of editorial artworks would be put up in response to this incident- I totally expected hardhats, but is it really necessary to tell potential visitors to "f*** off" if they're not prepared to take their chances at the sim's entry?

I understand the outrage over this happening, but it bothers me a bit that this kind of anger is aimed at anyone now entering BiW- some of whom may not know the story behind the signage. It just seems a bit misdirected, to me.

sorry for the critique- just my two cents :)

That is the traditional welcoming ritual in many parts of Brooklyn. I believe it is followed by the wallet snatch and foot race to the Subway.

I really would make a fuss about having that removed, with the support of the confused resident, because it will go on your record, and if there are any issues it will influence them.

ok I agree it may be a bit excessive, but maybe my assumption that in general residents would see it's an ironic statement tinted with black humour, due to the nature of the posters I put up and the hard hat left to wear, could be wrong.

while I was there those who where visiting did ask me about the posters and I did explain why I put them up, all said they would keep returning.

and then again maybe it's just a British thing to use such terminology in this way?

It is obvious someone isn't investigating abuse reports very well.
Wonder how many IBM employees inworld have gotten false ARs and banned?

It's been said that basically people complained incessantly about "griefers" and the head of the governance team threatened jobs if the situation didn't turn around. So now we're having to put up with people being suspended no questions asked. So that members of the g-team aren't out of a job. I think it sucks.

Sadly, this thread doesn't surprise me too much. :(

Selavy, I haven't been to BiW yet - did this happen on land you own or maybe on group-owned land of a group you're a member of?

I'm assuming that you and that malicious chain of yours are somehow related to this area. What I really don't get is how the Linden that suspended you missed that the chain was something that was allowed to be there. This should be in the AR-101 class and should be something that's really easy for them to check on. Really, really easy.

/me agrees with Ordinal - definitely push back and get this one removed from your record.

Oh, well, that's different. If that's the situation, I think we should all push, AR, and get each other suspended. I mean, to help them make quota and all.

Be interesting to see if you could successfully AR and have yourself banned.
