Brooklyn Is Watching (BiW) is a hybrid SL/RL project taking place on a sim in Second Life presently, the project will last for 1 year and the halfway mark has been recently passed and to date the project has been a success.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Popcha/72/140/27

The project is in conjunction with a RL Brooklyn Art Gallery "At Jack the Pelican Presents (487 Driggs Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211, USA) where gallery visitors will be able to see and interact with anything that happens at the above SLURL on the 52 inch monitor.

Document whatever you do, and post the photos or videos to the web and tell us about it here, whatever happens will be chronicled on this blog, and talked about on our weekly podcast."

http://brooklyniswatching.com/

The product is art and I believe this is a very good example of how a viable corporate business model in SL could work, which is what Linden Lab wants, right?

However, a artist exhibiting at BiW has been recently suspended for 1 day for an abuse report because a piece of art fell on another resident. One could loosely term the artist as an 'employee' of BiW or at least a customer of the company and only doing exactly what was expected of her on this sim.

It is exactly this 'shoot first' Abuse Report action and incompetence by LL that will continue to prevent SL from being a viable infrastructure for corporate business on the internet.

For further info on this incident see
http://www.flickr.com/photos/selavyoh/2915721570/

Do you think it's time that the Abuse Report system in Second Life becomes more transparent, shouldn't residents making a report against someone else be named, if the report is genuine the reporter has nothing to be worried about, but if you think this would lead to harassment of the reporter how would you suggest that it be dealt with or what other options should be available?

Dekka thanks so much for posting this post as i went and visited "Brooklyn Is Watching" and its so cool :) Taken a LM so i can revisit when i have a bit more time available :)

I totally agree with you on the AR system also seems LL needs to start getting it sorted especially when they penalize people that are obviously working to produce some great stuff for SL maybe they need real people trained in sorting this sort of thing out rather than the shoot first ask questions later attitude they seem to have developed lately.

Thanks Lord Sullivan, BiW is indeed a cool place, where I have been for a few months now creating SL Art, rather than posting much on this forum, it's been fun but this latest development has been disappointing.

How utterly ridiculous. Complete misuse of the AR system by the person who reported it, and LL's response indicates just how flawed this system is, never mind the implications for artists and businesses using SL.

How did a piece of art manage to fall on another resident?

And what's all that about a "Corporate Business 'employee'" being banned? Is it supposed to mean that the person is a cut above everyone else, and we should be shocked that it happened to the likes of him/her?

Apart from that, the shoot first policy does often suck, unless it's for the few minutes it takes to look into what happened.

I totally agree and i hope more sensible people visit knowing that perhaps a link could fall on your head because of SL instability and that they don't AR if one does (It doesn't hurt even if one does lol) I am saddened to see that was was dealt with as it was as it would be a shame to think that the gallery would pull out as SL needs more places like this to visit.

So hard hats on and to anyone reading this make sure you at least go and spend some time there and have a look there are some cool displays :) i especially loved the mix of rotating prims that was great to watch :) I must visit when the feed to the gallery is working Thursday to Mondays.

Thanks again for posting it Dekka

A piece of art fell on a user's head and they got the employee banned for it? *bwahahahah* Just be glad this wasn't real life, or the person would sue!

*makes note to go visit later today, once RL lets her*

TBH, it's hard not to see humor in this. If it weren't G-Team, I'd be tempted to think that a Linden was just funnin' with the artist. I mean, it's not like BiW is a secret--it's pretty well-known. And it's not like it's anything but obvious that the "pushes" resulted from an attempt at the always-borked physical linkage mechanism. (Hey: Weren't we supposed to get working linkages from H4, at some point? Whatever happened to that?)

But, it being G-Team, we can safely assume it was just a SNAFU. The artist should, of course, appeal the AR, just to try to get G-Team's management to see how inept their current processes appear--and in the case of BiW, how appallingly public the display of incompetence.

I agree with Phil. It really does not matter that it was an artist or a corporate business associate. This should not happen to anyone. It is very ironic though that LL would do something like this to the very people that they want to attract.

Is it Friday? Is this Florida? Is this performance art? Is this marketing? Is this another embarrassing AR? Is this a huge waste of time?

The Caledon Trolley and the trains take out avatars all the time. At least one a day, I'd say... though generally you can see them coming.

Exactly, if LL suspended people for every accidental collision then half the world would be on suspension.

Although LL are trigger happy in response to AR reports I think the idiot that submitted the AR should be held accountable too. Common sense should prevail.

I was being ambiguously self-referential in the true spirit of performance art, hoping to draw out participatory comments (such as yours exemplifies) from not so innocent bystanders which would metaphorically hit me on the head.

Pep (And perhaps allow me to raise an AR for assault by incorrect spelling)

/me agrees 100%!! Somehow it's been becoming public lately that ARs are getting swifter and have been summarily acted upon. I filed my ticket and it did take a re-open to truly get it solved in a satisfactory manner. The details may never become public knowledge, but, internally things can shift in LL in a direction that supports us, the residents. (^_^)y

Performance art about in-world art? It's just too meta for my poor head.

I can't wait for the upcoming "Evil Bots cause problems at Grand Opening of New Store, Prices Slashed, Great Bargains"

I guess I'm gonna have to re-think my idea for a picture that drops a 16-ton weight on your avatar when you look at it.

For gods' sake!

I was chatting with the owner of the Whittenton's mall one night as she was working on her signs, and distracted her. The thing was physical (I have no idea why), she dropped it, and it fell on me.

We both had a good laugh about it.

An AR? For THAT?! Some people...
