A lot of people have put a huge amount of creative effort into producing content for Halloween, not to mention the number of Halloween parties planned, and now we Europeans will hardly get to see it at all. And not all of us are oldies with kids to take out trick or treating.

Relax, halloween is just another commercial exploitation of something.
I'm quite sure that less than one percent of the people that celebrate halloween - real or virtual - know what the event really is beyond 'trick or treat'.
As for christmas... well that's on a tuesday so that comparison doesn't work, although it would mess up Boxing Day for those of us in the UK.
Seriously people, it's just maintenance downtime. It's always inconvenient for someone somewhere in the world. It's how things work around here, grow some balls and move on.

So? That matters... why? As you said on the other post:
"Halloween, however it is celebrated, wherever it is celebrated, does not affect me in Second Life at all."
... so are you just bored and wanting to flame?

Broccoli While you're partly right, certainly in the US, Halloween, or Samhain as it was originally called when the Celts were celebrating it 2000 years ago, is one of the few old festivals that Christians have failed to fully hijack. Not that they haven't tried, as in some mainly Catholic countries Halloween is celebrated as All Saints Day. It was basically a New Year's celebration, as the Celts started their new year on 1 November. Do I smell a Christian plot at LL?

If this goes as smooth as possible, they'll have alienated a great many people East of the US/UK. If it doesn't, and we have cascading failures, unplanned rolling restarts, and the standard fare that disrupts prime time US/Europe, then they've alienated their bread and butter, the people who buy sims, create content, and provide entertainment for the users.
If that happens, whoever was in charge of scheduling this should be handed a cardboard box to pack their desk and then escorted to the door.

Well, I am hoping to join some Halloween parties and given the times in the blogpost I personally might still be partying unless something gets borked.
However, I think it's a shame that so many people have planned events and created amazing stuff for this celebration, which will now not be open to a great number of people.
I'm sure we'll live and survive, but it could have been better planned.
And I sincerely hope the monkeys will change their minds about this one.
Edited because I misread the times in the blogpost.

From: Chas Connolly Do I smell a Christian plot at LL? Most definitely not. If anything, it's a bias against Christianity. Methinks you're looking for some kind of conspiracy where there isn't one. Broccoli

hmmm people plan events for holidays events take time, effort, and planning to produce LL thinks that's a good slot for downtime?
ok no lets try again.... holidays are generally times of social gathering SL is a social environment people will gather in SL on holidays LL thinks that's a good slot for downtime?
grr, not working, ok one more try... holidays are commercialized commerce brings money to sl vendors sl vendors sell their gains on Lindex LL profits from those sales LL thinks that's a good slot for downtime?
ok last try, seriously! Holidays are generally used to promote/reward loyal users holidays generally encourage time off (which can be spent in said environments) LL thinks that's a good slot for downtime?
Ok I give up, WTF were they thinking? seriously?! blah blah maintenace usually happens on wednesdays... guess what, EVERY country and culture that I know of makes exceptions for holidays. and a "user-centric" holiday like halloween (in it's common modern form) is a no-brainer for an exception in a "user-centric" environment like SL.... it's at the core of LL's business model

This is an incredibly stupid announcement, it should at least be the day after halloween, or preferably the week after to let later halloween events get some semi-stability.

Broccoli To most, it probably doesn`t matter what it *really* means, just what its become and what they know it *as*. Same way your phrase "grow some balls" makes no *real* sense, yet people use it all the time. Having a scrotum and testicles does not give you power or some mystical abilty to cope more than those without a pair.

I came up with an alternative theory. The Lindens have scheduled their down-time for when they intend to go out trick-or-treating! It's so they don't have to be around for tech-support or to answer phones.

Scheduling downtime for Hallowe'en is just plain dumb. Logically they should do it Tuesday the 30th, so the "improved" asset server will be ready ON Hallowe'en. Weird, just... weird.

Weird, just... weird. Why would halloween in itself warrant a new upgraded asset server? I would have thought, if anything, the CSI episode would have created more of a server load. Broccoli

Broccoli It doesn't, but that is what they are doing. Basic common sense says: 1. LL is upgrading the asset server hardware 2. LL normally does upgrades on Wednesday, BUT 3. Wednesday is Halloween, for many people this is a BIG DEAL (but not for Broccoli Curry) 4. Doing the upgrade on Thursday will be fine, BUT 5. getting the hardware in BEFORE Halloween will be better, as it will be perceived that LL is working hard to provide quality service for a major holiday. Now I am not a PR guru or a mighty CEO, but the steps above seem very sensible to me. If there really is a GOOD reason that LL can only do this upgrade on Wednesday they need to explain themselves so people will at least know their motivations. SJ

From: Ciaran Laval So we've got five hours of downtime on halloween: People aren't too impressed that parties could be effected by this, sales, yadda yadda yadda. I'll be at work myself during those hours so it doesn't directly effect me, although indirectly it might if things are borked when it all comes back up. However, do you think planned downtime on Halloween is a good idea or would you prefer they move it forward or back a day? it'll be fine. since it doesn't directly affect you, i think you should use this time to work (since you'll be at work) and just take a break from thinking about SL. if it affects you indirectly later, you'll just have to go with the flow and deal with wut comes your way at the time. preemptive worrying is not healthy.

I'm not worried about it, I just think it's piss poor timing. They didn't do maintenance this Wednesday, I guess it's just coincidence that the CSI party was this Wednesday.

Yup, so is Christmas, Valentine's day, Mother's day, Birthdays, Father's day, Easter, The Summer Solstice, St Patrick's day blah blah blah. However LL can surely put maintenance back 24 hours, do their maintenance people only work on a Wednesday or something?

Wednesdays give them two days to fix the things that broke over the weekend and two days to fix the thing the maintenance broke before the weekend starts.
